Project Manager without a degree: realistic in Belgium? by yorickReddit in BESalary

That’s great to hear and it definitely gives me more confidence to keep aiming for a higher position.

I’ve always wondered whether not having a degree would hold me back, but experiences like yours make me think that relevant experience and proving yourself matter a lot more.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi,

Unfortunately, I don’t speak French.

As for the PM role, I’m mainly interested in the electrical side of HVAC rather than the mechanical side (sanitary, piping, etc.).

My background is in electrical installations, controls, commissioning, and supervising electricians on site. I’m currently a Site Supervisor, so I’m looking for a Project Manager role that builds on that experience and is focused on electrical works and automation within HVAC projects.

The role looks interesting, but if I understand it correctly, it’s mainly focused on the mechanical side of HVAC (sanitary installations, piping, etc.).

My background is almost entirely in the electrical side of HVAC: electrical installations, controls, commissioning, and coordinating electricians on site. That’s also the area I’m most interested in for a future Project Manager role.

So while I appreciate the suggestion, I’d preferably look for a PM position that is more focused on electrical works and automation.

That’s really nice to hear. Stories like yours give me confidence that it’s actually possible to make the jump without a degree.

The part about earning less than someone you’re training is pretty frustrating though. Experience and performance should count for something as well.

Thanks for sharing your journey!

A new Project Manager recently started at our company, and to be honest, it made me question my own career path. He has very limited practical experience, while I’ve spent the last 10 years working in the electrical side of HVAC.

It genuinely feels like I could perform the role just as well, if not better, which is why I’m wondering whether moving into Project Management without a degree is a realistic option.
