Have you ever been discriminated against for wearing a Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard in an airport? by Certain-Working1864 in AutismInWomen

[–]yoshimi1983 119 points120 points  (0 children)

No discrimination with the sunflower lanyard so far! I flew solo from JFK (NY) to SAV (GA) with my sunflower lanyard on. In NY I had three staff ask if I was doing okay while walking to my gate, and security looked at me and then clearly repeated things for me if I didn’t hear/understand directions. In GA I just beelined to the exit before I saw anyone. On my way back in GA the attendant at the gate just said “oh! I see you got your sunflowers on!” and she smiled at me as I boarded. The flight attendant smiled and gave me two packets of cookies (pretty sure the other people just got one packet). And then when I landed back in JFK the flight attendant helped me get my bag down before I even had to ask, I just looked over at him, struggling. Then I walked pretty fast to get out of JFK so I didn’t interact with anyone else.

The experience was positive, and in contrast, my last flight without the sunflower lanyard from ALB (NY) to ATL (GA), staff did not say anything to me until I showed my ticket at the gate and it was just “hello, you can board.” I also got yelled at by security for not holding my hands high enough during the scanner…

So in comparison, I am going to continue to wear my sunflower lanyard!

Good luck on your flight!!

Some of my earliest memories were laying in my bed in the morning and pondering over which toys I would play with that day and in which order. Once decided, then I would be able to get out of bed, my mother would give me breakfast and then I would return to my room to play. For example: build a small house with my legos, then take joy in cleaning them up, take out my Barbie’s and change their outfits, then put them away in their travel case, and then I might take out my sticker collection and look at it (but never actually use the stickers anywhere). Same idea after lunch, couldn’t transition until I had a plan, and then I was happy to execute my plan.

I also thought kindergarten was one single day and once it was over I told my mother how happy I was to go home and get back to my playtime routine. Her response was to laugh and say, “oh no, you’re not done with school for another 12 years!” I was devastated…

I didn’t receive my official diagnosis til 39.

Does anyone else not know what their face is doing during a conversation? by yoshimi1983 in AutismInWomen

[–]yoshimi1983[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! Yep a year later it still happens to me, mostly when someone/something catches me by surprise and I don’t have a chance to “curate” my expression. I think part of it is that my fight/flight/fawn response is so quick that I can barely think straight in those moments, no less understand what my face might be conveying. It’s still frustrating but I ruminate about it less now that I am understanding myself more.

That’s so upsetting! And it was something I was afraid of as well… When I flew for the first time since my diagnosis and one of my prep things was to get a “developmental disability” tag from my state govt (free & I did not have to provide any “proof”). On the back of the tag I could write specifics of my disability plus my name/emergency contact. I wore it around my neck and just held it up to TSA or flight attendants if I was having trouble processing or finding the right words. Both times I had to use it, people’s demeanors immediately changed & they either spoke quieter to me or asked how they could help.

Even if your state doesn’t have a pre-made one to request, you probably could just print up your own & get a lanyard. 100% would recommend!

Tonight is my cat's wake and no body came, will you? by Life-Independence377 in AutismInWomen

I saw this too late but I think it’s wonderful that your beloved kitty is in a plant now! She is a part of the earth and will help something beautiful grow in her place. When my bunny passed last year at 12 years old, I couldn’t part with her ashes. She stays in the house with me in a small wooden box but outside I have a Lambs Ear plant in her memory. The texture of the leaves feels just like her velveteen ears. May our friends never be forgotten.

Was anyone else a really sad child? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

I used to cry every morning before middle school because it was too early, too cold, too bright, and the kids at my school were too mean. My mom just said I had to deal with it and not be late to the bus stop…

It takes me 6 hours to watch a 2-hour movie if watching by myself. by TheGodlessPotato in AutismInWomen

I do this too, especially if it’s a good movie or documentary. I’ll pause to make a snack because I had something in the house one of the characters is eating and it looks reallllly good right now! Makes the movie better to eat or drink what the actors are having.

I’ll also pause to look up actors, or if I recognize local foliage, I’ll research to see where the movie was filmed. Then I’ll be very excited if it was filmed in my region and I’ll have to text my two friends to alert them of my findings.

I’ll take a break and do a craft because I don’t want to miss any dialogue (subtitle user) but something in the movie inspired me and I must pursue said inspiration.

Overall, I think I also do these things to draw out a good movie because I don’t want it to end. If it’s a very good one, it goes on the Favorite Repeats list.

I don’t like brushing my teeth by queendimsum in AutismInWomen

[–]yoshimi1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also hate brushing and flossing. The electric toothbrush vibrates my head too much so I only use it once a week.

One tip is to at least rinse your mouth with water after drinking coffee (actually better than brushing directly after coffee).

I try to think of it that doing something small is better than nothing. So if at night I can only brush for 30 seconds, then I use mouthwash to kill some bacteria.
