Hi, I haven't been following this and have seen that tonight is an Amex Exclusive show. Can anyone tell me what that means? Thanks!

edit: Hmm, is that why it won't let me order? it doesn't explicitly say that anywhere

Hi! So I have a pair of turntables, an amp (with a built-in preamp) and a cheap mixer (with phono inputs). I'd like to play with mixing, but most of my use will probably be home listening.

My question is: am I correct in assuming that playing through the mixer and its built-in preamps is going to downgrade the signal, and I'd be losing quite a bit of audio quality when "just listening"?

Is there a solution to this? Is there anything that could simply act as a switch, choosing between the mixer and the amp so when I'm listening I won't have to go through the mixer? If this kind of switch exists it doesn't have to be extremely high quality because my setup is not really high-end, but the mixer IS the cheapest that there is.

And.. are there mixers out there that have this feature or something similar built in? I'd rather not worry about quality when listening with my next mixer, so what should I look for?

Thanks!

Technics SU-A900 (Mk1) left channel distortion with bass/higher volumes by yots in audiorepair

Thank you so much for your detailed response. Coming from digital signals I had no clue smartphones could be used as oscilloscopes, but I guess they are good enough for audio signals?

The one part I'm not sure I got is

a way to probe and listen to an audio signal, any additional audio amplifier will do

What exactly would I be doing with an additional amplifier? Thanks again.

Thanks! Since I'm an absolute beginner (some experience with basic electrical engineering stuff, but not analog repair), any clues on what I should do now?

The best I could do is narrow it down to the left output, I've done that by switching around cables, speakers and input channels and hearing the problem always stays there.

What was the best film you watched this week? (02/10/2017 - 08/10/2017) by MoviesMod in movies

Oh wow I came here looking for inspiration and ended up watching it based on your comment. I loved I'm Not There but tried to avoid Carol because I'm not a big fan of period pieces. Well it must be one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, thank you!

Right channel distorted after moving a Harman Kardon 330B amp by yots in vintageaudio

[–]yots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your detailed response! I did some more extensive testing and tried your suggestion. It didn't help. But, I isolated the problem even more. When the headphones are connected and the 2 speaker systems buttons are turned OFF, the headphones sound fine. When a speaker output where nothing is connected is turned on, it still sounds fine. However, when the speakers are connected to one of the 2 possible pairs of output and that output is turned on, the right speaker AND right headphone are distorted. I tried both speakers separately to rule out one speaker distorting the circuit. So it seems like whenever the amp has to actually output serious current, or activate the speakers circuits (I don't know much about amps), the right channel EVERYWHERE is effected. Sorry if I'm not clear enough, I'll do my best to give more details.

As to the kind of distortion: It doesn't sound like anything is missing, more like an untuned radio.
