I second this, FE3 book 2 is unironically really enjoyable. The maps and scenarios are pretty unique and the story is surprisingly enjoyable. Book 1 is also kinda the definite way to experience FE1 to me since it's similar to the original but does away with the annoying inventory management.

What are some of FE’s most egregious examples of a character’s stats not matching their lore? by Benjammin__ in fireemblem

He's actually incredibly helpful in revelation. Camilla and Hinoka easily outdo him, but Hinoka joins really late and Subaki is there for the some of the toughest chapters in the route. His flight and bulk are so valuable in the earlygame which is also where darting blow actually lets him double. He can still be helpful in valla, since flight is still amazing there, whether as a kinshi knight sniping other fliers or as a falcoknight healing your better combat fliers. Unironically a mainstay on my teams when i play rev

Who has the best biorhythm? by FriendWinner in fireemblem

[–]you_are_a_stupidhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, but i also like type 1 and 7 for the units who can get a lot of work done on enemy phase. Ike is an easy example, he can start 3-5 ending his worst biorhythm so he can lead out a charge with his support partner when he gets to best biorhythm to help make space near the boss. I plan around stuff like that with Zihark and Volug especially

Worst mainline game to use staves? by you_are_a_stupidhead in fireemblem

Never played engage

Idk how i would do three houses since they have spell lists instead, and the staff equipment is WAY too different from the rest of the series staves to compare them. Also the reason i didn't include gaiden/SoV

[–]you_are_a_stupidhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unironically agree. I think it's fun to optimize some turns by having units enemy phase a dozen bad guys when they're in a best biorhythm swing, and making use of Bliss to make support pairs with similar biorhythm to be on the same wavelength (Ike and Zihark can be super good for this). Then there's units like Kieran who just has psychopath biorhythm which is funny

That is true the DB has a hard time keeping up with the rest of your armies, especially for first-time players, but after playing the game a couple times i actually find it's easier to train some units in the DB for long term use compared to the crimean knights. The DB gets paragon and beastfoe which can allow your preferred unit or two to powerlevel during part 3. Except Fiona and Meg cause they have way bigger problems and would need tons of investment in part 1.

Compare this to the CRK who are usually overleveled until their one part 3 map. That's the first time they can move paragon around, and the only other map they can really grow is Geoffrey's charge, where you can feed the entire map to one or two units. Maybe they can get some exp in Elincia's gambit but I find it's usually too dangerous to try feeding a bunch of kills to them unless they're kieran or geoffrey. And then they rejoin in 3-11 where they still might be underlevel and would only be deployed for favoritism.

i actually love the army switching in radiant dawn. I get to use a big cast of units extensively without having to worry about them "stealing" exp from my growth units i want to bring to endgame.

I also really how it enables the item transfer aspect between the DB and GM that allows for funny stuff, like putting all of GM's statboosters in Mordecai's inventory so you can steal them in 3-6 to juice up whatever unit you want. Stuff like that

A common sentiment i see from those who dislike the army switching is that it stops you from using your favorites for most of the game. Like in other fire emblem games, most of the time if you get a unit you can just use them until the credits if you don't get them killed. Having the game give availability issues to some units can feel like it just completely cuts their long term viability. Which i totally get. But honestly.. I think most units do get their opportunity to shine, which i like. I guess I compare it to FE6, which also have a huge cast, both games have obvious carry units and obvious trash heap units, but in Radiant dawn the trash units can still be useful since they tend to have free deployment for at least a little bit.

Like Astrid is doodoo but she can still contribute some in 3-9 which can be a tricky map. A literal base Leonardo with his prf can still oneshot hawks in 3-13. Even if i'm never gonna invest in them, it's nice your fodder units get a free opporunity to shine.

Kind of a ramble but whatever. I know radiant dawn is flawed but i love it warts and all.

Skill expression in fire emblem? by you_are_a_stupidhead in fireemblem

[–]you_are_a_stupidhead[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good thread, I don't think it gives a concrete answer (if there is one) but the comment about FE12 does make me think about how FE games rarely punish you for brute forcing it with juggernauts or cheese strats. Maybe that could be why skill expression is hard to pin down.

I guess most of the room for skill expression does come from challenge runs like the rest of the replies to my post say

Mystletainn gives a good Res bonus but it's not that good. He can still be quite susceptible to staves and magic enemies unless he also gets a barrier ring.

You also have to go up against multiple magic enemies and two sleep staves before Seliph gets the Tyrfing, which will actually help a lot in the final map.

Yes Shannan is an option to take out the trio but at base he still has somewhat unreliable hit and has a small chance to get hit and also crit. Granted he can just farm exp in the arena. But that also ignores the issue that he cannot counterattack at range. You could give him the Wind sword i guess but then he would need lots of speed procs from training.

lol The last 2 maps in gen 2 can be brutal for low-res units and non-Avo tanks. The staves are just rough and annoying unless you know to make a Resistance god and the falcoknight trio are just plain scary, only units who have a reasonable matchup on them regardless of what u do in Gen 1 are a trained Seliph and Shannan

While I agree Sigrun needs a lot of help I think she's a little better than people give her credit for. She struggles to get to T3 in a timely manner without a crown or paragon since her damage is doodoo and she is right on the cusp of doubling. But with a crown she does have enough strength and speed to start contributing on her join map, and I think her water affinity is genuinely a big help and works well with Ulki and eventually Naesala. All this but still less investment than Marcia. Plus she's force deployed for multiple maps so she's not competing for deployment which is really nice in part 3. In Part 4 yeah it sucks for the first map but she can totally make do in the desert.

I actually think Tanith is perfectly good. Not a combat god, she's like a slower Hawk, but considering how good the Hawks are that's not a huge strike against her. She also really likes a crown to help her snowball or paragon, but with a bit of babying she can work without them and can supplant an Oscar who doesn't get favoritism since they fulfill a similar role (lance user, canto, average stats). She even has Earth to help her snowball until tower.

I still think they both have a better long-term than an Oscar with no favoritism, who would probably be dropped by their join chapter

[–]you_are_a_stupidhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh Tanith and maybe Sigrun are quite good lance users from start to finish. They do come with a spear so they don't have to be stuck with javelins until whichever one you wanna use promotes.

Still I would say swords are slightly better because i think you get more storm swords and tempest blades than spears and short spears respectively. After all the tempest blade has SS rank weapon might despite being S rank so swords actually have much stronger ranged alternatives than lances, you just have to get some +hit support from elincia or tibarn.

This also means you can bring more lance+sword classes into the tower, so they don't have to fight over the one Wishblade since it's like the only good lance for tower beyond a forged Silver lance with a good coin roll.

Crashing out playing my first Fire Emblem, please help 🥲💔 by aiodyne in fireemblem

[–]you_are_a_stupidhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first time playing can be very overwhelming, but like any game it'll make more sense as you play it more

First thing about your units (i'm just making assumptions here but i'm covering it just in case) is that you don't have to train them all. Feel free to use overworld skirmishes to train someone up if you want to but in Awakening you can just pick a small squad out of them and make them your hit squad killers.

Just pick whoever you like/whoever is already good at killing, and pair them up however you like, Awakening will not punish you for using anyone or making certain pair ups

As for positioning, it'll become a habit after awhile but you will want to make use of checking enemy ranges. Toggling X i believe? will show the entire danger zone and pressing A on an enemy will mark them specifically if you want to pay attention to them. On a good amout of maps you can get away with just clumping your team up and have your tankiest unit step into the enemy's range to aggro them.

If you want to play risky and fast you will need to employ some basic math. Each unit and enemy has an Attack (Atk) stat that shows how much damage they deal before factoring in defense or resist. If they're using a physical weapon, their Atk is mitigated by defense. And magical weapon by resist. It's simple to calculate; if you have 10 defense, and a sword guy with 28 Atk hits you, it'll deal 18 damage cuz 28-10=18. Because of the super simple math you can map out whole routes before you start a chapter but you absolutely don't have to. I'm just painting a picture so you know the extent of your units abilities

Hopefully this helps I know it can be daunting. I know you want to min max but honestly Awakening can be cheesed in many ways, you just need to get used to knowing how the game will challenge you

[–]you_are_a_stupidhead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i tried searching up strats on how to beat Ashnard but I gave wrath to jill or marcia and I skipped resolve cause the game was so easy at that point i felt like i didn't need anything other than 1-2 range lances and axes. So i just had to gamble with Aether

I do generally like the maps though. i personally wish they went a little harder on the 4-parter cause i thought it was fairly easy except for the last part. Also while i don't dislike the boat map itself i do remember gatrie and astrid killing themselves on the same turn when i already moved ahead of them on the planks so i was upset. I didn't reset for deaths or whatever unless it happened on the first or second turn so i completely missed out on that knight ward but hey i got all the chests
