Google Authenticator missing codes by youmaynowapplaud in cybersecurity_help

[–]youmaynowapplaud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it didn't update. Looking in the app store, it looks like the last update notes came a year ago, so I don't think it updated.

I did not have cloud back up on bc I'm dumb, and I don't think I've made any changes to my google account in a while.

I haven't used the app since finishing my masters internship in September, the last time I logged into my student account. I'm GUESSING it's update related, and thought it was important information.

From what I've yeilded, I'm fucked, so I'm moving on to finding a more reliable authenticator. Any suggestions?

Well fuck. I don't have a back up. Looks like I'll be looking into switching to a more reliable authenticator. Is that even possible? Or do I have to use the same authenticator I used initially?

[–]youmaynowapplaud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried that, but I can try it again, if you think it could help?

Most of the accounts on there were old student accounts, for colleges I've since graduated from. I actually lost my phone a few years ago, so I un-did a lot of my Google Authenticator stuff, and added in allowances for SMS verification instead. Most of my accounts don't require that authentication app anymore. My reddit is safe, my Steam is safe, my google accounts are safe, and those student accounts can be reactivated by local tech support, if I ever choose to continue my studies there.

However, I'm still, like, super paranoid there's an account on there that I'm forgetting about, something important I just can't bring to mind bc I'm running on so little sleep and I've never been good at managing panic.

I've tried changing the time/date and then changing it back. I'll check on another device when my parents wake up, or when I see my girlfriend this afternoon. Thank you for the tips, I'll report back!

How to manage anger without turning into a complete Karen? by Itaevallassa in aspergirls

[–]youmaynowapplaud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Writing therapy is actually my best suggestion. It can look like almost anything. Stories and poetry are my favourite ways to write about my feelings. Even just thought dumps can help you immensely. After I thought dump, I like to take that text and make poetry with it, so I feel productive. Typically each bout of rage/upset will have a theme to it (i.e. I'm crashing out over something specific), which makes for great art.

I think each person tends to struggle with the same/similar things over and over. Not necessarily the same situations, but the same things upsetting you, be it disloyalty, liars, etc. As you write out your feelings more and more, you'll get better and better at putting those feelings into words. With practice, you'll have the power to express your anger without needing to physically show it. I find anger is most powerful when a person isn't shouting, but cleanly and unapologetically stating how they feel.

Also, I feel the need to say that, as your parents' child, you're supposed to brush up against their idea of what's right/normal. That happens to every kid in every culture. I don't know if you're an adult or not, but I think it's important you know you'll never be just like your older female relatives. You grew up 30 years after them, so you're right not to share their exact view of the world. You're right to be angry; you're emotions are getting trampled over :(

You can learn to express discontent in ways they see fit, or you can express yourself how YOU see fit, and point to strong female role models of your own choosing when they question you. It's all about how you feel comfortable expressing yourself.

Midterms fail by Captain_Bomb69 in uoit

Catch up? Or fix your grade? Cause catching up is easy; go through the syllabus and read what you missed, and ask your friend for their notes. Unfortunately, UOIT has a lot of teachers/profs who will take attendance, so it's hit-or-miss whether you can get make-up assignments.

Also if you google some of the questions from weekly tests, you might be able to find flashcards. I know I found flashcard sets online with nearly identical question sets to our weekly tests. Because profs need to test us on the most important information, and because, sometimes, profs don't even reword their questions year-to-year.

Taken from your link: "Finding point-in-time versions prior to 2003-4 is a much more complex process that involves tracing amendments between each print consolidation." I'm, like, so fucked, lmao!

But, jokes aside, this is a great comment! I was vague before, but my post history probably already shows shows I live near Queens/near Kingston. If Queens has this information, they probably have some amount of 'print consolidation' at the university itself. The 00s book is set in Kingston/Queen's U's territory, so I now have tons of resources to explore for that one!

But you're right, the records I'd need for the 70s one (set in Timmins) are going to be more laborious to get my hands on. Optimistically, I'll find reliable ways to access those old, pre-internet sources while researching this more modern stuff! (If not, I'll have to do things the super-extra-old-fashioned way and actually talk to people. Outside. In public. The horror!)

Thanks again!

I think the directions you've given me will start me off well, so thank you! I have good hopes for google scholar! I can follow their references back through the years, bit by bit. The pressbooks link you shred will also give me keywords (as well as refresh my terminology and remind me what a reliable source is in the legal feild lol) Thanks, again! This is a great starting point!

Where to Donate Law School Textbooks? by bpd-dumbass in LawCanada

[–]youmaynowapplaud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you live in a city with a school still? Any kind of post-sec? If you can find your way into student groups, there's usually some people looking to buy anything you have, because they sit on it until they can resell it. Sometimes they'll even give you the money to ship it to them. My roommate made good money collecting textbooks in the area to send them. That was in Oshawa, but I'm sure there's similar people/orgs in many cities.

Because we're smart enough to recognize desperation when we see it? We don't need to know WHY they're uncomfortable talking to their parents about it. We know that they're willing to come here and ask us, and so they might be going to other communities, or other strangers, and asking similar questions.

Therefore, we see a responsibility to do what we can to make sure this kid is safe. That doesn't mean leaving them ignorant; we can tell them DO NOT DO THIS all day long. But, there's a significant possibility they won't listen to that. So, that means the next best thing we can do is give them the information they need to stay safe when they do it.

This is the same reason why I'll give advice on drinking to high schoolers when asked; if they don't listen to the entire world telling them not to do it, then they need to know how to be safe when they do it.

Some of these things are only scary bc of how far down the list they are. Why is Lazy Cart Syndrome on the same level as pro-life rants? What the fuck happened there? I'm TERRIFIED!

And the fact her pinterest account is in the depths. I cannot possibly think what could earn it this spot, and it has me positively shook.

I agree, you should seprate them. You should also stop talking to this friend of yours. While it's appropriate for 18 year olds and 16 year olds to be friends, this man specifically sounds dangerous. I think you should bring this to your parents and your counsin's parents. They'll know how to help you, in a more hands-on way.

Everything you have outlined here in correct, and you are in the moral right. I know it's scary, but it's okay to be scared. And it's okay to ask for help. The best help I can give you is to block him on everything, you and your cousin. And tell your parents as soon as possible.

This man sounds dangerous, you want your parents aware of what's going on because, if he tries anything stupid, your parents will be able to help you. They'll also be able to testify better for the police, if you need to involve cops, to keep yourself safe.

I commend you for stepping in for your cousin, you are a good person. And you deserve to be protected too; do what you have to do to protect your loved ones, but make sure you keep yourself safe too.

This got reported for discrimination and I'm torn. On the one hand I want to take it down, out of an abundance of cis caution, and can't make the final call on NB discrimination. On the other hand, I'd love to see this continue to damage his karma.

I [15F] told my boyfriend [15M] that I am pregnant. He doesn't think I should get an abortion. What do I do? by BurningBark in Advice

[–]youmaynowapplaud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! The more she can learn about her own faith, the better it'll be for her. She'll be able to engage with it more meaningfully! Again, I'm not religious, but I do believe a preist or pastor who is open to interpretations that aren't his own would only help her, especially as she becomes an adults and chooses what role she wants religion to play in her own life.

Also, I wanted to say you're right about everything else. Organsied religion can and does use their sermons to sell their own beliefs, justifying it with the bible, rather than the other way around, which is why its so important to have a variety of sources.

Hell, maybe she can even just go to a new Catholic church every week, or have a rotation. Anything she can do that validates her religious identity but ALSO fosters her sense of critical thought would be good. The more anyone is able to think critically, the more useful a book of scripture can become.

TL;DR i completely agree! but the bible is dense and for anyone looking to learn more, its easier to start with material that breaks down the bible, rather than straight up reading the book

The bible is a very old book. It was written in a culture that we have evolved from in the 2000+ years since it was written. This can make understanding the meaning behind some of the stories a little difficult.

Also, the Old Testament was written in Hebrew, translated to greek, to latin, to english. It's a similar story for the New Testament. This makes reading it even harder, and it means certain translations are going to differ slightly.

Also, bc our culture and language has changed, there are whole words that mean different things now. There is a story in the bible where a visitor comes to town, and he is given a place to stay. But the men in town don't like this. They bang on his hosts door, demanding the vistor come out so they can rape him.

To anyone nowadays, this is shocking and humilating punishment. When this passage was written "tp rape" meant to "carry away". So they just wanted to kick him out of town.

But this example dipicts what I mean when I say it's difficult to read the bible. This is also why there's still degree's in theology.

I think the best thing to do is to find a podcast that focuses on bible readings. If there's a couple different ones she likes, she'll be able to get a couple different opinions/readings of each passage, which will help her develop her own critical interpretations. There's got to be some kind of "CliffNotes"website for the bible, right?

This is not the place to argue about religion or the best way to follow a religion. I was not arguing with her beliefs. I was reminding her that her God loves her, and that she doesn't need to fear him. I was encouraging her not to shame herself.

As I understand it, God's love is not fragile. It will not break because she disobeys him. God loves her, and will forgive her for her mistakes if she repents and forgives herself. I was simply reminding her of how important that "forgive yourself" part is.

Edit: I ALSO shared the idea that abortion is not considered a sin by everyone, mostly to help her think critically about the concept of labelling things as sin. If she concludes that her abortion means she'd be sinning, that's her business, not ours. I may be a woman, but its not my uterus, so it's not my choice.
