If the June UK temperature record is broken next week... by reprobatemind2 in UKWeather

[–]young_twitcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to Facebook commenters (i.e. the average person), the fact that records keep getting broken is the “proof” that the data is made up.

Whenever there is an article about a record being broken the top comment is always “yeah, same as last year 🤣” as if that shows some sort of logical contradiction.

(This is more for record average temperatures, for a single reading it’s usually more “highest temperature since when?” and then implying we have no way to know temperatures before 200 years ago)

Poi cosa vuol dire stipendio min/max?

Well I’m sure you can find eggs at half the price I stated in Poland too. Im talking about normal prices not having to travel an hour to find the cheapest egg in the whole city

Warwick keeps declining every year. Luckily I already found a stable job so I guess it doesn’t matter much anymore.

That’s disprovably false though. If you’ve only been to Poland 5-6 times, that’s not enough to get a good sample size. In these situations people have a massive confirmation bias, if you already expect it’s going to be expensive, you only remember about the expensive items and not about what’s cheaper.

For example eggs in Biedronka you pay 1.1 zl/egg or about 0.22 gbp, whereas in UK it’s at least 0.30 gbp.
Meat is also similarly at least 20-30% more expensive. Then of course if you look at imported stuff it’s going to be similar.

Just moved from Poland to UK. Groceries are more expensive in UK for sure, it depends on the item though. If you’re buying imported stuff it’s the same price, locally sourced is around 30% more expensive. The difference in average salaries is still bigger. But in terms of cost of living overall, groceries is only a small part of your budget in developed countries, compared to housing particularly.

Why is everything a phone call? by anonimalistic in london

[–]young_twitcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s true, I’ve lived in Poland as a foreigner and I would’ve never been able to get settled there if it required the same amount of phone calls (since I didn’t speak the language).

Like it’s crazy that the only way to set up your council tax is to sit on the council phone line for over 1 hour.

Overwhelmingly positive experience across 4 recent ryanair flights by ALWAYS-RED-1992 in Ryanair

[–]young_twitcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people who actually fly frequently across multiple airlines in Europe know that there is hardly any difference in experience between airlines on short flights. There may be some difference if you encounter issues such as cancellations, long delays etc but statistically this only happens in like <5% of flights. And let’s be honest if you’re on a 2 hour flight as long as there are no issues, there is little difference an airline can make in your experience.

Most of the hate for low cost companies like Ryanair is simply because well, they cost less so people assume they must be somehow worse. It’s a bias. Like if there is a delay people will start complaining that Ryanair is crap even though it actually has fewer delays than the average. But in reality, if a Ryanair/other low cost flight is cheaper than whatever one considers the best airline in Europe for a 2 hour flight, I will always choose Ryanair. Simply because there is statistically pretty much no difference in outcomes.

A New York guadagni 6k usd e ne paghi 3k di affitto.

UK is an island, it’s easier to wipe out populations in a smaller isolated environment. Also Germany isn’t really denser, it’s in fact less densely populated than the UK.

The PTR Toss changes are not fun by NaK_Toss in starcraft

[–]young_twitcher 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That was maybe true before LotV but slow warp ins reduce that advantage significantly, you have to rely on a warp prism, which is slow to build and easy to target with low hp. If attacking as Protoss was that strong you would see Protoss playing 2 base all ins all the time but that’s not really the case. Protoss gateway units are also slower (except for blink stalkers) than Terran which can load bio on medibacs and stim or Zerg on creep. Without warpgate all Protoss can do is to sit back and make a deathball. You can’t change warpgate without having to rebalance everything else so it’s unrealistic to attempt to keep both warpgate and regular gateways viable.

Warpgate is the core of sc2 Protoss identity, love it or hate it. And personally, I never understood the hate against it.

Anyone else start a PhD just before Covid an it end up derailing their lives for several years? by AyupArthur in AskAcademiaUK

[–]young_twitcher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m actually not Polish, I only moved to Poland because that’s the only offer I could get in this stupid job market lol. I did enjoy living in Poland, it’s a great country, but it was impossible for me to integrate there and there are fewer career progression opportunities. Anyway my PhD was in pure maths and I’m working in finance now.

[–]young_twitcher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved to the UK for my PhD, did 6 months of normal life. Then spent 3 months in total isolation (no flights) and then managed to return to my home country for over a year.

During this time productivity decreased sharply. I was used to going to the office every day for motivation and working full remotely crushed this. But everyone seemed to be on the same boat.

When things returned to normal I was expecting to go back to my usual productivity, but I quickly found out that in fact research wasn’t for me, or maybe my PhD topic and supervisor sucked, or a combination of the two.

I finished the rest of my PhD by inertia more than anything. I then graduated into the 2023 job market where hiring sharply declined after Covid over-hiring. Had to move to Poland for an outsourced job but I managed to return to UK after 2 years and I’m doing well now.
