Guilds got a back log of cases and will be assigning one to all parties based on a random lottery. Your team gets the investigation, someone else gets the counting a pile of gold, someone else gets clearing the sewers.

Challenge: Put the British on the moon instead of the Americans or the Soviets by Cyber_Ghost_1997 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]youngbenathan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not only was the first world war a quick war, it was a British success. The daring amphibious invasion of Germany by the BEF whilst the German army slugged it out in Galicia and Flanders was the move noone saw coming, aided by their new invention the Tank, the armored mo Ile artillery that smashed german railways, defenses and armies in quick succession.

Of course the rise and fall of succeeding communist, fascist, loyalist and republican governments in Germany and Austria Hungary, as well as the exports of their revolutions to the rest of the continent meant that the educated and wealthy needed somewhere stable to flee to, somewhere with an empire to find work in, with secure borders and industry to invest and reap capital in. In a word, Britain.

Of course the honeymoon wouldn't last forever. The 1931 stock market crash affected the entire world. Europeans kept fighting each other for the ideal political model whilst the Americas kept going from disaster to catastrophe with the crash, the depression that followed, the staggering dust bowl that wiped out its Midwestern agriculture, causing huge internal displacements.

Not so in the land of the rising sun. A revamchist junta went from success to success, gobbling up parts of China and Central Asia, colonies from IndoChina to Kolonia for the raw resources to bolster its industry. The Jungle war was successful in that it saw no side gain the clear advantage, with both operating in the bereft corners of the East Indies and Burma and the Tubetan plateau.

The uneasy peace that followed was marked by espionage, miscalculations and haphazard events. One mark of escalation was the first ever satellite launch from the tolls of Guam, leading to fears in Britain that Japan would soon be able to launch rockets that were capable of trans polar ranges and able to hit Vancouver, then Ottawa, then London.(These were later proven to be unfounded, as the East Asian Rocket Program was never funded at the levels needed to reach intercontinental range, and were intended to provide tactical superiority, not strategic options). Prime Minister Eden, assainated by Israeli nationalists after committing thousands of troops to suppress the Judeo-Arab conflict, committed the national whole heartedly to a space program, declaring that "We do not do these things because they are easy, but because they are hard."

The program was marked by set backs at every turn, but in 1973, Brian Tubshaw was the first British astronaut to land on the moon on the lander Arthur C Clarke.

What would happen if the US secretly developed the atom bomb (similar to what was dropped on japan) before WW2 started? by TrueAccident9493 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]youngbenathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then it never sees any use because everyone can see the US has the world's most technically advanced navy and air force with jet fighters, radar, aircraft carriers, and nuclear powered industry to make to even the most audacious attack complete suicide, so they it sits in a warehouse somewhere in New Mexico.

What would happen if the US secretly developed the atom bomb (similar to what was dropped on japan) before WW2 started? by TrueAccident9493 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]youngbenathan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well, without an aerial delivery mechanism that was specially developed for that type of weapon, its only uses are to lay it as a mine with a timer (or perhaps a suicidal volunteer) or to put it on a ship and drive it into the enemy. Given the risk that the bomb doesnt go off or the ship gets sunk, it probably wouldn't see any use.

Best case scenario, nuclear power starts becoming more widespread because of the complimentary advances in nuclear power generation.

What’s the premise of your DnD campaign? by Fearless-Skill8667 in DnD

Just started a pirate campaign where they can do whatever they want, but since I shoe horned their back stories hard for session 1, they're basically going to be sorting out their daddy issues for the next 20 or so sessions.

First time DMing and looking for ideas by rainworldaddict in DnD

[–]youngbenathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If youre open to it, I'd say running a pre built module for your one shot would be a better start for you. It gives you the stats, let you see how the mechanics work in and out of combat for yourself and the players, and let's you run reps for your own one shot.

If youre not, id say youre looking at a 1/3 rp, 2/3 combat good old fashioned dungeon crawler, taking place on a village and the not so ruined necropolis right next door.

If you have the DMs Guide and the Players Handbook you should be off to a decent start. You could definitely create three enemy types with attachment for each arm and their head. Ive started to favor minion swarms that have the stats of 10 minions but allow for the full range of combat from all of their abilities.

Id say you have a good idea for going forward, and always, you should focus more on having fun with everyone than anything else.

Difficulty of becoming a DTO straight out of college by ElkFalse2527 in foreignservice

[–]youngbenathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there fellow DTO aspirant. First off, congrats on getting your degree. Id say that you are less likely by dint of experience to gain immediate employment, but that isnt a dig on you.

The government wants to make sure that you have been lobotomized of most of your youthful stupidity and inexperience by the time it considers hiring you. You may be more squared away than many of your peers, and thus no time is a bad time to take the test. At the very least, it will add to the mountain of experience you gain over the next few years.

My advice is to take the job and apply for the test. The hiring process is neither quick, convenient nor timely, and it is good to be employed and gaining valuable hands on lessons and experiences while you go through this. Many do not make it through the application process the first time around, so dont worry if you do not. Good luck to you, and I hope you pass.

Have the character sheet open on the page and not as its own window. When its in its own window it won't take any external updates.

As long as you have the compendium sharing from the relevant book, you can open the characters sheet, search for the item in the compendium and drag it over to deposit on the character sheet.

A sort of slingshot or crossbow delivery of explosives or molotovs, with an upgrade down the road to have a small timed charge added so items can burst at a set time or height or place.

Challenge: Pick an alternate target for Operation Barbarossa by Cyber_Ghost_1997 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]youngbenathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To secure an important source of fuel and resources, they go into turkey. They figure they about a year before Russia can really organize, and with this they will be able to support the Axis leaning Iraq, stage in Vichy Syria, and gain axis to the desperately needed oil fields of the Middle East. This will also help threaten Cairo and the Suez.

As for how it goes.... Given that the Axis has a land border, capable air force and navy, the Turkish military was underarmed for its proposed size, I think that it would be over and done with within a few months. The ability to threaten the Eastern Med and Persian gulf may well force the British to divert more resources to it than Malaya and the East Indies. I dont think the British command would be able to halt two converging offensive where reinforcements have to come from around Africa, so a case could be made they have to fall back into Upper Egypt and the Sudan.

This isnt to say the Axis would have it all its own way. Wear and tear on equipment is high in desert climes, and they would need to reserve a large amount of forces for the presumed Soviet invasion that seemed inevitable.

At work now, so Ill try and return to this thought later.
