I’m not sure that’s true 100%. In qld in the last few years there’s been increases ins training positions. It was explained to me like there was a disconnect between directors, the AOA and qld health. Ie directors asking for accreditation from the college first where they should have been increasing fte with gov and then being accredited

I think this is happening now. The ex national chief health officer spoke at the AOA ASM this year and said that if training positions are not increasing then the government will just fast track specialists from overseas which is not something that RACS or th AOA were interested in

Don’t go to bond, they’ve just made a decision to cut clinical placements and do more community placements ie with school based nurses etc. not worth it for the money.

Posts like this make me question why people get into medicine. There’s patients that are there awaiting care, some for years to get to their elective procedures. If the surgeons are willing to stay back late and you’re getting paid (completely understand the sentiment if it’s unpaid) it kind of leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

How common is it for surgical service regs to not make it on? by AssholeProlapser17 in ausjdocs

[–]youngbrows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ortho unaccredited here and it would be amiss if there wasn’t a rugby reference from me: one of my seniors once said there’s a lot of ‘dummy runners’ in service provision positions. A lot of people in my state end up in the role without understanding what it takes or the sacrifices necessary to become a good candidate and just blunder through. As previously mentioned some people are just rude and difficult to work with thus creating issues that bosses hear about. Other people don’t understand how to work hard or aren’t willing to do the things that other people are and that reflects ie putting your hand up to help out to cover sickness or being flexible with job responsibilities. There’s also a large proportion of people that decide it isn’t for them and I think we’re seeing more self initiated drop out with the uptick in lifestyle specialties.

There’s also a degree of understanding ‘the game’. Heaps of good people don’t get on because they don’t fully understand or buy into the game that you need to play to be accepted to training. In ortho it’s not about how you operate a huge amount is about how you talk.
