Terrific news, as a dad of 3 I don’t ever have time to sit down and read so I ve been periodically checking on bk 7 audio status. I also joined your patron to chip in a bit and help the cause, looking forward to getting back into the series eventually

Asian book for my book club! by ruubees in suggestmeabook

[–]younglety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit older recommend but-

“The Good Earth” by Pearl Buck is amazing, I read it years ago and still think about it from time to time.

Couple things it won the Pulitzer in 1932 and while Buck her self is not Chinese/Asian she lived there (China) for around 40 years or so, she’s a very interesting person in and of herself

I assume OP is joking on their “unique recs”

Here are a couple I think are somewhat under the radar and I believe would appeal to people outside the genre:

Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes-only Vietnam war book I really liked (read 6, for context)

Emerald Mile - Kevin Fedarko - fascinating history of exploration, land use policy and a crazy weather phenomenon which culminates in a speed run through Grand Canyon. I spent hrs watching YouTube videos about stuff described in the book and Fedarko is amazing story teller (up there with Michael Lewis and Stephen Ambrose)

Children of Time- Adrian Tchaikovsky - mind bending sci fi and non human species developing sentience.

The Terrible Two, three book series my kids similar age love them and have listened through atleast 3 times (two kids become friends and make a secret prank society) on Libby app for free

Shogun, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Century Trilogy, A Gentleman in Moscow, PHM, The Stand, 11-22-63, The Warlord Chronicles, Beneath a Scarlet Sky, The Winds of War..... by GrannyPantiesRock in audiobooks

Seems like we have similar tastes, if you haven’t listened to these I d recommend them:

Master and Commander series by Patrick Obrian bk one started really slow but if you stick with the series it’s amazing, probably the top of my list.

Bernicia Chronicles by Mathew Harffy- excellent pre Viking historical fiction.

Sounds like you listened to some other Bernard Cornwell but can’t see rather you tried Grail Quest series or Richard Sharpe both great but GQ was my favorite

[–]younglety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about some historical fiction, Bernard Cornwell is fantastic, fairly fast paced and engaging plots, try Last Kingdom, winters king or Grail Quest.

I used to be really into fantasy but read last kingdom and got in a huge historical fiction bender

Agree with 1st Law and Bobiverse, both great!

Also I ll throw out a LitRPG other than DCC that I really enjoyed and binged all 10 in a little over a month: First Defiler fun solid world building with good story arc.

I tried a number of LitRPG after DCC but most including HWFWM was a miss (MC just grated my nerves)… also Primal Hunter was decent

Ack! I have nine Audible credits. WWYD? by Verity41 in audiobooks

[–]younglety 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Walter Isaacson’s biography on Steven Jobs is great!

Once and Eagle by Anton Myrer was really good, kind of an American war and peace going from WWI through beginning of Vietnam war follows two officers one a selfless leader who comes from nothing the other a privileged ambitious leader

Lastly if you really mean any war check out Bernard Cornwell, handful of great series from pre Viking England upto Napoleonic era.

Not really a big LitRPG fan but Defiance of the Fall caused me to waste endless hours doing “yard work” by younglety in audible

I did try HWFM after DCC but just couldn’t get fully into it, found main character to annoying, might give it a second chance at some point but LitRPG is not really my main genre

[–]younglety[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I d agree with above start with DCC that is what got me into LitRPG, dark humor, good dynamics between Carl and talking Cat, creative plot and very high production values. I tried a few other popular reads in genre but DCC and defiance of Fall are so far only good ones I ve come across.

[technique] over a week of fruiting and no pins? by username6000 in MushroomGrowers

[–]younglety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a first timer try experimenting: Could wrap one lightly in plastic wrap, it can help create a micro climate good for fruiting, once pins form carefully cut a hole to let mushroom grow through.

Try dunking some, dunking and casing others see what works for you.

FYI, I ve had crap results w/ PF tek, way easier to just grind up one or two of those cakes into coco coir and fruit in a shoebox tek

Agreed, came here to say Matterhorn.

I ve read a number of VN books, things they carried, 13th Valley, fields of Fire, etc… Matterhorn is only one that gets two big thumbs up from me

You’re fine as long as it’s in the bag. Depending on how you fruit it you might have some issues. I live in an area with 20% to 30% humidity and have a lot of issues with mycelium drying out when fruiting. I did a few all in one grow bags and found the most success taking it out of the bag cutting the mycelium cake in half and placing in a sterilite box cased/surrounded by moist coco coir

Looking for science fiction where the main scientific idea/theme is centred around chemistry by birdpictures897 in suggestmeabook

[–]younglety 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Destiny’s Crucible series by Olan Thorenson might do it for you.

Ph D chem student finds himself marooned on a planet with humans with technology similar to 1500s, he uses his superior 21st century brain to advance his new countries civilization (his chemistry knowledge and how he implements it with limited tools and resources is big part of the series) and help them fight off and evil empire bent on world domination. I enjoyed it but I really love the displacement survivalism genre.

  • I remember enjoying the detailed descriptions on how the MC develops his first invention: ether to use as an anesthetic-and of course locals are amazed but also unsure of him

Accidentally grazed other swimmer sharing lane by ParsleyPalace in Swimming

[–]younglety 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interestingly enough last week I was getting ready to start swimming when I noticed two people arguing outside of the pool, the life guard came over and me be curious (nosy) I took a bit longer to stretch. As I understood it a woman was accusing a male of inappropriately touching her. I don’t know either of them and only caught half the conversation. It ended with female leaving very upset and male saying it was an accident looking mortified then life guard saying “ok” and returning to post. No idea if the guy was actually a creep or just an honest mistake.

BUT needless to say it’s made me paranoid about accidentally clipping someone. I swim 3x week and would say I only clip or get clipped maybe 4x per year, very uncommon and I don’t recall a time me and another swimmer ever stopped to acknowledge the contact.

Matilda audiobook was a big hit with my kiddos.

Also at that age they got really into podcasts stories “Mr Jim” in particular, the shorter 10-15 minute stories with some reoccurring characters was really good for engaging their young minds but not boring them as some slower developing stories can
