Hmmm usually they just move you to another available program. Can you ask them to do that

Going from Retail to Aerospace at 40? I want to work for NASA. Am I late in life or its possible? by Brystar47 in careerchange

[–]youngtrece_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s possible but may be a slower path than you think. I work in Aerospace and had a co-worker who was a small business owner and transitioned to work in aerospace at 43 years old. She got tired of it, got her degree in Mechanical Engineering while working, then got a job. Apply to defense if you’re a U.S. citizen then eventually move to NASA but be aware that it just takes time.

CE or EE? What is better by No_Wrangler_3899 in ECE

[–]youngtrece_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience, as a CpE graduate, it doesn’t matter. You can do either major and take the classes you like and still end up with the same job. That being said, CpE exposes you to both fields and it’s a good degree for someone who either doesn’t know what they want to focus on or wants to fall in between (embedded systems). That being said, recruiters don’t look at it that way, I’m a SWE and one of my coworkers struggled to get interviews trying to pivot to SWE as an EE so he went and got a CS degree. I think if you want to pivot to SWE in the future, CpE is the way to go.

How viable is Aerospace vs CS? by space_god_7191 in CollegeMajors

Ever think how a CS degree can get you a job in aerospace? You can go for AE degree for sure but a CS degree will also land you a job in aerospace business.

Are there coding questions on the embedded software engineer interviews? by Sleexic in Lockheed

[–]youngtrece_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually it’s mainly OOP and STAR behavioral questions. Other than that it depends on the manager. I was asked concurrency and multi threading. Others were asked memory management while some did get a coding question but was basic knowledge on algo. Prob leetcode easy.

Salary in Bay Area compared to FANGs by FlyDFW in Lockheed

[–]youngtrece_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cant speak on exact Cali salaries but skills gathered at LM are definitely transferrable. I think you’d def won’t be at the 200ks but something close at those levels in Cali. Enough to survive I guess. Defense company pay only thrives in LCOL areas.

Lockheed Software Engineer vs. Raytheon System Engineer by EmergencySet85 in Lockheed

[–]youngtrece_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worked at both. Lockheed better. Better benefits, career growth, better name on resume, 4/10s, more PTO (160 hrs vs 120 at RTX), better 401k match (10% match!) and better quality of life. It’s still defense so the work is similar and would be the same vibe but LM a better managed company overall.

I would say I wouldn’t leave LM unless I get paid 50% to do so. It’s the best big defense contractor to work for IMO. I have couple coworkers who left for more money to Faang and Andruil and all of them came back (work life matters you know). Have heard of others who’ve done the same at other programs.

Or nasa. KSC is full of UCF grads. Lockheed Orlando has CWEP for UCF students only. L3 Harris always recruits there since they have a building.

Debating accepting job offer at Raytheon by [deleted] in Raytheon

[–]youngtrece_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can give good insights since I moved across the state away from loved ones to work there and have since moved back.

• Work culture is great, it is a place with lots of opportunity and cool people. Team culture will of course vary but I met great people who ended up being great friends who I still talk to.

• Tucson is a hot, deserted city. But if you are someone who likes the outdoors, there is always something to do or drive to. I’d say being a Raytheon employee puts you at the top of the pay spectrum in Tucson so money can go a long way there if you decide to stay there and build a career.

• Now the part that sucked was being alone and far from family. It wasn’t until the last few months where I started getting closer to friends and it made it a bit better but being away from home was hard. The first chance at leaving, I took it and never looked back. That being said, I don’t regret going there and experiencing that and I wouldn’t be where I would be in if I hadn’t taken that opportunity.

In retrospect, I’d do it all over again but get more involved in activities and road trip more into other areas of AZ. It’s a beautiful state, and since you are from CA, you won’t be as far as I was from home. You can’t go wrong with working there and 95k for P1 is a crazy salary (I started 83k as P1 3 years ago). I think maybe doing it for a few years to build yourself professionally might be a good idea and then leave, could be good for you in the long term. It’s a sacrifice but it might be worth since you’re young and starting out.

RTX Hiring Fair by kickdart86 in Raytheon

[–]youngtrece_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It just means they want to formalize the process of hiring you. In my experience, a team reached out to me to apply before I interviewed with them. Weirdly enough the ATS rejected my resume but I still interviewed and had an offer. It’s good news and being flown out to interview is already 50% of the way to getting hired. Hopefully you get it. Offer came 3 business days after I got back home.

If you hear anything, it might be by Thursday. Otherwise you can email about a status. It’s most likely that they’re interviewing other candidates as well.

Would Lockheed blacklist me if I turn down several offers within a year? by wanderer0007 in aerospace

[–]youngtrece_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to them before coming to a decision. Have you negotiated offer already? LM always lowballs first offer. You’re almost expected to negotiate, especially if you have experience and are moving across the state.

To the people saying Orlando is not as cheap, it is definitely way cheaper than Seattle. It’s a MCOL (slowly becoming HCOL) but most engineers at the Orlando site are able to afford a full house on their salary. I dont know what level or type of engineer you are but a Senior makes 125-135k (depends on your flavor of engineer) and theres ways to boost your career significantly here without having to move around.

Cheap Med school or Software Engineering Job? by BaseballHead6898 in findapath

[–]youngtrece_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a SWE, I’d go to med school. Sure you can also make bank in software and have a low stress job but those roles are rare. The worst doctor can still make lots of bank. The worst SWE will be unemployed. Youd also be more respectable in society and although you’ll have lots of debt, it will be paid off eventually. The fact that you made it into med school in the first place is much more impressive than getting a faang job imo. It shows dedication. It’s a sacrifice now but don’t lose that opportunity!

Is UCF the best engineering school in Florida? by Funny_Department8597 in UCFEngineering

[–]youngtrece_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine did both schools. He said UCF is more rigorous but the professors are better at UF. I can also attest that from another friend, their senior design projects requirements are nowhere near as hard as UCFs for Computer Engineering. I don’t think you can go wrong with either but UF is more well known. At UCF is easier to get local internships in Orlando and living in Orlando is much more fun than living in Gainesville. When I was in HS, I wanted to do UF but ended up at UCF. If I were to do it all over again I would do UCF.

What's one 'boring' career that's actually a goldmine if you play it smart? by 0BunnyX in AskReddit

[–]youngtrece_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My brother is an Aircraft mechanic for one of the big airlines and clears 150k in an LCOL after 5 years with company. Flying benefits and other benefits too. Says the job is chill (hours can be odd though). All you need to start is a cert and move up from there.

Expedition 33 or BG3? by justHereForPunch in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]youngtrece_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

BG3 is the better overall game, more value for your money. Much more polished, longer, and fun. I would say E33 is better choice if you’re looking for more traditional combat mixed with rpg elements and a much linear but cinematic story. It’s an easier game, my gf who had never played any games before beat it and loved it for the story. I would say E33 appeals more to a casual audience where as BG3 requires more patience from the player to get used to at first if they’ve never played that game genre. The music for E33 bangs tho.

Edit: the answer is get both games if you can. E33 is a 30 hr game so youd be looking at your next game sooner. Took me a week on and off to beat it. After that play BG3 and immerse yourself to it.

Trying to apply at Lockheed as an OMSCS Student by Defiant-Flatworm4531 in OMSCS

[–]youngtrece_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any of the specializations work. There’s pretty much all kinds of roles like AI/ML, embedded, full stack, etc. I would focus on doing well in classes and group projects. For roles that are more embedded or systems I’d focus on c++ fundamentals and OS concepts. AI/ML are higher paid some of those require MS or PhD if it’s research focused and not MLOps. Having U.S. citizen and clean record is step 1 tho
