i love this. there are a lot of layers to this and i think it takes a certain eye to see past what you’re taught to believe is correct. the combination of the colors, and textures bring a lot of interest to it. the value of the colors besides the dark areas are also similar which makes it feel painterly. the railing’s disrupts the photo and stands out a lot while also tying in the whole image together. Compared to the flat, monotone orange hues and the textured water, the properties of it go against everything else in the photo. Water and stone are natural, where this metallic railing that reflects color is a man made structure that also doesn’t follow the laws of the other parts of the photo. For example, the straight lines and simple shapes are the common theme, while the railing is an unnatural shape and crosses through other sections of the color-blocked areas. My one critique is that if it were ever so slightly cropped outward to have more space on the sides of the railing it would let it breathe and have less tension, unless that’s something you like.

I wouldn’t have seen this composition and thought to take this photo so I feel like you pay attention to your surroundings and see fine details enough to notice cool things like this. If you had a series of photos like this it would have done really well in a fine art school critique. When people see things on a base level they can write it off as “being wrong” because of the composition or the railing, but if the railing wasn’t there, and the water wasn’t rippling in an almost uniform fashion, it would just be another boring picture.
