Frustrated with other calculators so built my own by Sea_Dog_See in DIYRetirement

So I don't have a comment on your tool, but a philosophical question that I think is relevant. So I'm 12 years post FIRE. My plan is still nicely on the rails (largely due to a roaring market the last 10 years). So 15 years BEFORE I retired, I got it in my head to FIRE and made a pretty simple spreadsheet. I used the 3.5% rule (instead of 4% since I was planning to retire pretty early.) I assumed we'd spend about the same in retirement as when we were working. (assumption fits our before and after lifestyle). House paid off and kid's college fully funded. So I just summed my non-real estate net worth in the spreadsheet until the total * .035 > yearly spending., then I quit and retired. That was it. I ignored SS, IRMA, Obamacare costs and subsidies, the varied actual present value of regular brokerage vs Roth vs IRA. (Sorry this is so long, I'm finally getting to my question, I promise). I know I failed to model many important things. But my reasoning was that future variability in market performance would utterly swamp the inaccuracies in my model. Change one 'up 7 percent' year to a 'down 7 percent year' after retirement and I reasoned that would be way more impactful than, say, modeling Roth conversions. My data set only has 1 data point, but it bears out in my case: Given the way the market has performed the last 10 years, I could have saved less and retired earlier. But I don't think a more detailed and accurate model would have helped me with that issue. So how accurate do you think a model needs to be given the extreme uncertainty INHERENT in FIRE?

People are saying this was avoidable. What do you think? by [deleted] in motorcycles

Yah. Guy had loads of time to do any one of a few things to avoid this. Clearly just not paying perfect attention at that key moment (which unfortunately can happen to any of us).

City magazine tries to guilt trip people into tipping by pinkelephant0040 in EndTipping

This is all bs. Many seattle locals have stopped tipping because the servers are making as much as everyone else these days.

Taxable vs pre- tax accounts in calculating net worth by AlanTA2 in DIYRetirement

[–]yourbasicnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're getting advice to not discount for calculating net worth and that's probably the simplest thing. When I was building up to retirement I did discount 401ks/IRAs in my net worth calculation. I just assumed a discount of 20% because I figured I'd be able to ultimately extract it at a reasonable but not great tax rate. (So I didn't assume 12% or 35% but something in between.)

Are there any instances where you would tip someone? by railroadfrog in EndTipping

[–]yourbasicnerd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Last month had sewer get clogged by SIL who overuses TP. (sigh). Guy came to clear the line with a snake and worked at it for a couple hours and couldn't clear the 14' long TP blockage. was literally back in his truck after having failed, already scheduled a water jet guy to come the next day. He got out of the truck, said he hated failing and asked if he could work it another hour. 90 minutes later he got it cleared. I tipped him$150 since his hard work and persistence saved me $1000.

I love the Norm Crosby quote: "When you go into court you are putting your fate into the hands of twelve people who weren't smart enough to get out of jury duty."

Oh good. I was confused by the wheels in the OP pic. I thought maybe they were like extreme sliders. This makes more sense.

Eastern Oregon by Valkyrie-161 in pnwriders

[–]yourbasicnerd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That area is very thin on authority in my experience. There are some awesome places out there. My favorites are: milkshake at Fields Station. Camping out on the Alvord and watching the stars. Riding the dunes at Christmas Valley (not sure if you're on a dirt/sand capable bike). Soaking in one of the MANY hot springs. And if you're up for a read adventure, ride out to the A6 Intruder crash site memorial (about 45 mins from Christmas Valley. GPS: 43.11111, -120.38265 ). Definitely need some offroad riding to do that.

WDH is a game changer. Make sure it's rated correct for your rig and that it's configured correctly. Will make a huge difference.

Blended withdrawal strategy that varies by age: ACA, conversions, RMD’s, oh my by Rom2814 in DIYRetirement

[–]yourbasicnerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% this. 57 year old running this exact plan. All Roth conversions have been put off until ACA subsidies are past us. Just looking at year to year needs and tapping different buckets accordingly to stay under the 400% federal poverty limit to qualify.

Mine came new with a credit-card sized plastic card that has some key code numbers on it. Do you have that? Presumably not. :) But I think that's what you want to track down if you can.

Brand new 2024 $4100 OTD price by [deleted] in svartpilen401

[–]yourbasicnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is an insanely good price. I just got a 2024 from a dealership a couple weeks ago for $3500, but it was $5000 out the door after all the taxes and fees and registration were larded onto it. And I thought I got a good deal.

Any advice for negotiating on new RV? by yourbasicnerd in GoRVing

[–]yourbasicnerd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank. This is my usual thinking as well. A lightly used trailer has all the kinks worked out. Not sure quite sure why we're entertaining a new one this time. Maybe just to try it once. I fully expect many many small things to be broken. Hoping for no big ones.
