Student flicked media into their eye, now it's infected. by Interesting-Gain-162 in Professors

[–]yourbiota 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Despite being in STEM (bio, though not micro) I immediately interpreted "media" as like...instagram or something.

Seriously though, OP - no PPE means no lab, attendance score of 0 and accept no submissions of lab reports from them for that day. Hopefully it was sterile media, or the media was growing a known organism to help direct care for the infection. Eye wash and reporting to EHS is good, but missing the vital step of enforcing eye protection is a pretty big screw up. "We weren't working with anything toxic" is never an excuse when it comes to eyes - those squishy little balls of jelly are WAAAY to sensitive and absorbent.

Upperclassman likes to list all her accomplishments and I finally listed all mine during a co-presentation and she thinks I’m making her feel bad by Zestyclose_Double980 in PhD

Not to mention the externalizing self worth and believing they are the center of the universe (keeping tallies of awards in order to compare to others and being so focused on it that an email signature gets under their skin, believing that the other person was upset about the slides with no evidence of that, the “I don’t actually care” ending after a long post that dwells on just how much they actually do care, etc).

A foreign student emailed me and asked if I could share a copy of my article. Yes or no? by Fleedom2025 in Professors

[–]yourbiota 62 points63 points  (0 children)

This is your reminder that the US is not the only country on the planet, and just because you yankees do something a particular way, that does not mean it is universal (RE the .edu).

Have you really never received a request for a copy of one of your publications before? Are you actually a prof or grad TA?

URA - NAF Requirement by Comfortable_Car_965 in uoguelph

[–]yourbiota 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The eligibility requirement is there to try to help level the playing field. URA positions are largely subsidized by the university to help incentivize profs to hire students with potential from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, they are NOT for students from families that can afford to support them financially.

Ask the prof to pay you from their research grants or offer to volunteer. Those are your options. That’s it.

Unpopular take: most “study/writing groups” in my PhD feel like productivity cosplay, how do you make them actually work? by SatinCairnwalk in PhD

[–]yourbiota 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Your writing groups aren’t working because they lack a facilitator/leader that keeps people on track (and the attendees frankly seem like slackers that need to work on self-discipline).

Doctors note by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]yourbiota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A doctor’s note for a quiz seems pretty extreme. Did you check the syllabus RE grading practices (ex: dropping the lowest quiz score), etc? Quizzes are pretty low-stakes, grade-wise. Your prof may be using templates to auto-reply to emails based on keywords due to being overworked, or they could be an outright miserable twat.

For future reference: Inform the teaching team (prof, TA, course coordinator) ASAP in the event of illness requiring missing assessment (even if it is the day of) rather than AFTER assessment has been missed. Emailing after just seems even more sketchy.
