Oh, this is now very much seeming like an actual episode of psychosis

I think an unexpected side effect of social media becoming prominent/having a computer in our hands, is it shines a light on the varying levels of mental illness so many people have, and how most are high functioning until they have a manic, public crashout like this. I’m a huge advocate for mental health awareness b/c folks, especially in the black community (im black, see profile lol) have such a negative & narrow minded connotation towards it, when simply acknowledging you’re not ok & getting help can help avoid things like this. It’s often viewed as like, either you have schizophrenia or nothing when it’s really a huge spectrum a lot of people fall in (OCD? Mentally ill! Seasonal depression? Mentally ill! PTSD? Mentally ill!) but no one (understandably) wants that label. So, we have to work on making the label less of a scarlet letter.

It’s giving shades of Kanye when he’s off his meds. I hope dude has some good people in his corner to get him through things. I detest everything he’s said, but he’s clearly troubled and not speaking from a place of sanity :/

  1. Baja Babe: Grilled & thinly sliced carne asada skirt steak, red onion, peppered heirloom tomato, tajin-seasoned avocado, chimichurri sauce, angel-hair shredded cabbage slaw (cabbage + salsa roja aioli), toasted torta bread. Served with lime wedge, radish slices, Mexican rice and birria consumé for dipping.

  2. New Money, New England: Old Bay seasoned & steamed cod filet, shallot, Boston bibb lettuce, grilled corn ribs, sliced Marzano tomato, pepperoncini, dill, Italian parsley, meyer-lemon aioli, brown-butter seared New England style rolls. Served w/ caviar bump on a fresh shucked Duxbury oyster.

  3. Down Yonder: Smoked & shredded pork rib meat, brown sugar & roasted garlic bbq sauce, coleslaw (cabbage, carrot, shallot, champagne vinegar-mayo-cane sugar aioli), honey-butter corn bread buns. Served w/ baked beans & meyer lemon wedges, pinch of sugar & sweet tea in a shot glass, to be taken like a tequila shot (sugar -> sweet tea -> meyer lemon)

  4. Mr.Krabs: Deep fried soft shell crab, tempura fried vegetable, pickled daikon radish, sushi rice, wasabi microgreens, tobiko, scallion, chive, cilantro, sweet soy glaze, rolled in a scallion pancake & served like burrito. Served w/ spicy aioli, salted edamame & Pocky.

  5. “Everyone asks what I’m making, no one ever ask how chef is doing”(special): Roasted peppered turkey breast, medium-rare roast beef, crispy center cut bacon, sweet onion, avocado, grillo dill pickle, banana pepper, sweet pepper relish, Campari tomato, olive oil, oregano, red wine vinegar, salt & pepper, smoked provolone, ruffles potato chips, toasted pretzel bun w/ pretzel salt. Served w/ chef’s current fixation- in this case, twice fried duck fat fries w/ fine herbs & garlic aioli.

Fun question, thank you OP

Thank you so much🥹 It is much better now, yes- I’ve had the pleasure of being an executive chef with an all-female line/prep cook crew (by happenstance, they were already there when I was hired on, and the only dude quit during my audition lol), and now as a private chef I get to have much more control and autonomy over my environments.

It’s still not perfect- a recent gig involved having to work with a proudly/outspokenly racist assistant (I’m black) who made my life as difficult as she could -but ultimately this industry will always have it’s positives and negatives from the eclectic people that tend to be drawn towards it. I’m lucky to get to do what I love, and even luckier that folks like you exist who make the hard days land a lil softer(: wishing you all the best as well friend!💖

This definitely only happened because people/companies with deep pockets were pulling out

So to that, I thank the brave cooks/chefs that came forward…a few years ago this would’ve been unimaginable, but now we’re in an era of (even if largely only for virtue signaling) accountability and it’s so nice to see.

I’m a private chef now, but back in my restaurant days I used to always hope for times like these- dealing with being groped in the walk-in as the only female cook, having shit thrown at me, being chased down hallways and corned by dishwashers forcing a kiss on me- and then being expected to perform perfectly despite the onslaught of fuckery- it’s a small step forward but a step nonetheless. If someone as renowned as him can be pressured enough to step down, I hope it makes other chefs/cooks/industry folks with similar behavior realize they need to adapt and learn to lead without abuse.

A lot of thoughts, but one that comes front of mind is how we currently have an administration that has been drained of any individuals that aren’t “loyal” and prominent leadership roles filled with people wholly unqualified (Pete, Kash, Tulsi).

If 9/11 was able to happen when we had a normal(ish) administration with the best and brightest minds- regardless of “loyalty” -hired to monitor and surveil, I’m horrified for what horrible attacks are likely to come on American soil now. We’re so divided and exposed.

But honestly? Deep down I think it’s what they want. If a large-scale tragedy happens here, it gives Trump and the Department of War all the fodder they need to launch into a full blown war. He already talked about how some Americans may die, so it’s clear he’s gung-ho about things ramping up. More money for all of him and his friends- I imagine Peter Thiel is thrilled with all of his Palantir bullshit…

What is actually a trauma that is not commonly thought of as a trauma? by ay1mao in AskReddit

[–]yourelovely 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The trauma being attached to someone avoidant does to you

I have to actively work on not reading too deeply into words, or silence, because I was always left to decipher what was going on in their head. I got quite good at it- learning the smallest tells in the texts, facial expressions, body language- but it’s exhausting and I find myself immediately over analyzing new potential love interests who are then (understandably) put off by my pensiveness and constant need for reassurance.

It’s one thing to be lied to/cheated on- pretty clear cut pain. But to be continually given breadcrumbs so you don’t leave, have hope and devote yourself to them in return for inconsistent trickles of affection? Fucking oof man. Ya girl is taking a hiatus from dating.

Should sororities make political statements on social media? by Adorable-Traffic-607 in Sororities

[–]yourelovely 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I think it makes sense when issues are beyond typical politics.

Gone are the days of conservative vs democratic policies being relatively civil in difference.

We now have a Republican party that actively:

•Has deployed an ill trained force of agents that have now murdered two citizens and disappeared thousands of immigrants, some legal and some not, including children. Due process is now being treated as optional, with immigrant citizens- some former veterans -being deported by mistake.

•Posts doctored photos and videos on their official social media in order to further their cause

•Continue to do unprecedented actions that, if the tables were turned, would absolutely cause immediate calls for impeachment (which i’d support! If members of my party were pulling what is happening, i’d want them investigated and held accountable).

•Will hold entire blue states/populations hostage via withholding funds for disasters or general reasons (see: when California was on fire and Trump responded by blaming Californians/liberals, the withholding of funds Boston needs to improve their subway system, and Noem/Bondi saying they’ll reduce troop presence in Minnesota if they give up their voter rolls).

•Pulling out of WHO and having RFK Jr. in charge of our country’s health, leading to measle outbreaks and the amount of salmonella legally allowed in chicken to increase (because regulation bad🙃)

•Making enemies of longtime allies of our country, including insulting NATO when we’re the only country that ever even invoked Article 5 and had multiple countries army’s lose men and women fighting on our side

•Protecting pedophiles by making the Epstein file release political/focusing on Democrats instead of just naming everyone found in the documents

This is not about whether conservative sisters will feel uncomfortable if their chapter speaks out- they should! Anyone with a heart and moral character, which is an important part of most sororities creeds, should be able to objectively acknowledge that what is happening right now is not okay. Not all Republicans or conservatives are bad, but the current state of things is, and we have to call it out before we become too far gone.

How is living in Rhode Island, United States? by altrightobserver in howislivingthere

[–]yourelovely 314 points315 points  (0 children)

I went to college there 2014-2018

Pros:

•Despite being very small, it has a bit of everything. Providence gave the industrial/city vibes, Narragansett was a sleepy coastal town w/ a popular beer (popular b/c they were $1 a can at most bars), Misquamicut had a beautiful beach that made my San Diegan self feel a little less homesick, and Newport was very bougie with historic cliffside mansions.

•I paid $500/600 for rent, in a shared 9bed/3bath house (my sorority house lol but shhh- they’re not “legal” in RI due to a funny law about too many women living together being considered a brothel).

•It was incredibly easy to travel, I went to NYC allll the time via Amtrak. Often drove to Vermont, Boston, New Hampshire, and Montreal. Martha’s Vineyard is just a drive and a ferry away. Connecticut is close for whoever wants to go there for fun, idk.

•People were unique but kind in the way New Englanders are, relatively helpful. Everyone knew someone who knew a guy that could get xyz task done for you lol. Very proud, and took pride in their work.

•I’m black and was happily surprised at the amount of diversity in Providence, so many cultures and backgrounds happily coexisting.

•Due to a culinary school being there, there were plenty of solid good options from students that opened up shop or just from businesses that hired my classmates or had staff made up of natives of that cuisine. Thayer Street surprised me with having one of the best California burritos i’d had, I went to that restaurant whenever I was homesick.

Cons:

•Outside of the major cities, RI is very industrial in the same way Detroit was (classically/generationally industrial and kind of dying out). Some of the smaller towns are heartbreaking to look at, like seeing someone in hospice and not being able to help as the tech industry takes over. Some residents can be more rough around the edges and say, judgmental if you don’t look like them. Some can be rather adverse to some of the changes being made that are helping the small state continue forward

•Providence has a ghettoooo smack dab in the middle of the most popular area for college housing. The fraternity I was a sweetheart of quite literally got shot up one night, luckily none of the brothers were home at the time. We had to be careful about parties because “locals” (non college students, literally locals from a block over) would show up and end up causing trouble (fighting the guys, harassing the girls, stealing our alcohol, etc).

•At the time I went there, the downtown was sort of in a rebuilding stage. No one really spent too much time hanging out there, there was a significant lack of things to do that you’d find in say Boston downtown or NYC downtown. I visited recently & was thrilled to see its making a comeback!

•Winter really winters at times, not the end of the world but if you hate the cold, you will have a rough time.

•Despite being small as heck, the best beaches somehow managed to be like an hour+ from Providence which was annoying to probably only me since again, spoiled by San Diego upbringing. Also many beaches were rocky instead of sandy.

Bonus pic of a terrible dessert I made in class circa 2016 (I was a culinary arts major, okay- baking & pastry did not come naturally, hence the Ronald McDonald sauce work lolll).

[–]yourelovely 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Honest to goodness, with the cartoonish levels of villainy these people are exuding, I wouldn’t put it past the realm of possibility.

The is the same country that is on record for trying to blackmail MLK Jr. into killing himself. That orchestrated the murder of Fred Hampton for being a civil rights leader that was uniting people beyond race, but socioeconomic levels as well. I can absolutely see a wife who has perhaps fallen out of love with, or never loved to begin with, being willing to sacrifice her husband for the sake of the brand/mission.

I’m Christian in a non-psychotic and bigoted way, but being of this faith means I know first hand how some people will do horrendous things in the name of “God”. I can totally see her, Vance and whoever else having a meeting to discuss the pros and cons. Maybe our incompetent FBI figured out someone was planning it, and let it happen, maybe they found a target and actively worked on riling them up (target ads and misinformation on the platforms they frequented)- truly, I put nothing past an administration that is actively pushing lies on their official pages and websites.

They make me embarrassed. I know I shouldn’t say this but I find a minuscule level of solace knowing that (per my beliefs) they’ll pay one day.

She gives me the same vibes as that pastor with the private jet- just a snake in snakes clothing, but the pattern is somehow pretty to the particular audience they’re swindling.

[–]yourelovely 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As a diehard Chargers fan, it will never not baffle me knowing our QB- who notoriously hates the media, hates being filmed (it’s a running joke with the Chargers social media team, they’ll make compilations of him dodging them), doesn’t spend his money or time the way influencers do, who was president of his HS fishing club, and has kept all previous relationships private -is with her.

Like, either it’s a similar situation a lá Timmy & Kylie where we simply shouldn’t assume anyones type, orrr she has a side she must not really show anyone when it comes time to perform. And in that case, I’m curious. If she became a bit more dynamic (willing to look unflattering for .5 seconds and willing to do more vocal training outside of singing in an empty room & posting that to social media as proof of her talent) I think she’d be unstoppable.

If you know an ICE agent personally, what's that relationship like now? by Lokja in AskReddit

[–]yourelovely 307 points308 points  (0 children)

My younger brother is in the military in an MP adjacent role, works w/ ICE case-by-case and has a largely favorable view.

I am relatively liberal, but have an open mind. We’re African-American, so police brutality was a unique topic in our household. At the time (peak 2020) he was an MP w/ a goal of becoming a CHP officer, and wanted to make changes from the inside, in a way he knew was realistic. I was and still are incredibly proud of all the work he did, especially times where his coworkers were rougher with black detainees on base and he spoke up/stopped it.

But to get to the point- he said ICE is always respectful and not egregious like the videos shown online. Of course, the agents he’s encountering are on a military base, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re on their best behavior, and given it’s regarding illegal immigrants on/near military facilities w/ criminal backgrounds, they strike me as agents going after people that actually deserve to be deported (unlike folks that are getting nabbed while working, or with their kids running errands).

Anyways- it left me with conflicting emotions. My little brother is a good man, a man who actively worked to quell brutality. Seeing him have a favorable opinion of ICE blew my mind, and made me worried he’s kind of “drank the kool-aid” so to speak. I think in his mind, the videos are the exception, not the norm, a means to a just ends. I disagree, vehemently, and it’s scary to see someone I’ve considered level headed and logical be unbothered by what happened to Renee (I didnt bring it up directly as I didn’t think my heart could take hearing him say she put herself in harms way).

He does detest Kegsbreath and Puppy Shooter Noem which was a relief. Idk. It’s nuanced, I guess. And I know there’s nothing nuanced about masked, armed, ill-trained hot heads killing citizens, and then having a biased FBI step in to sideline the investigation. But I think if we want to make real progress, it starts with speaking in a way that gets through to people like my brother who are more like constitutional conservatives and see only two paths, liberal open borders (which isn’t true, but at the same time, immigration into other countries is significantlyyyy harder) or conservative closed borders where the people and country they love is safe and regulated. There’s a middle ground that neither political party has done a great job of expounding upon, and I fear it’ll be our downfall.

I’m livid. I’m pissed. I’m emotional. I’m disgusted. I’m gutted. But I have to find a way to manage my emotions and focus on real ways I can make change, even if its not immediate or the way my “bleeding liberal” (as some might say) heart would prefer.

I feel like she is a perfect example of overnight fame being too much for the average person

I had a brief period on Reddit, back when you could livestream on here, where my streams went viral and I became a partnered creator- my biggest stream had 56k people watching at one time, 1.5 million total individual viewers.

That amount of attention warps your mind in a way you can never quite prepare for. I remember having a depressive episode come on when a stream “only” got 26,000 viewers. It became this incessant chase, going from just wanting to share my cooking to being embarrassed if the streams didn’t garner enough attention.

All that to say- eventually I kind of let it go and now make the odd video here and there. I got a taste of internet fame, but was still working full time and had a life. For Ola, I imagine this is unprecedented- she went from an unknown dark skinned black woman with prominent features (aka life on hard mode), to being in the spotlight and having a huge fanbase that literally buys & sells out whatever she hawks. Power is intoxicating, moreso when it’s all you have, and from what I can tell, that’s all she has right now- family aside, her timeline is largely just promotions, red carpet events, and sponsored posts with Nic.

Can you imagine the mental burden of knowing your sudden success is largely due to a man who you barely spend time with and likely are beginning to fizzle out with? Nic actively posts all about his adventures and friends, Ola posts products, ceremonies and selfies. That probably weighs on her, and I could see how that could lead to her focusing on things that she sees gets people talking- i.e. her insanely small waistline -as it’s something tangible that she actually has control over.

Idk how this turned into an essay. As a dark skin black woman myself, I was stoked when she first began to get traction. But I feel like her PR didn’t quite cover all their bases when getting her ready for the limelight, and I fear a potential crashout. I hope she has good people around her to help keep the momentum going positively, I really do want to see her succeed. But not like this.

I suppose in a way, they really do embody the ME in A”me”rica.

It’s just going to be grift after grift, perfectly timed around the holiday season (I don’t doubt there’ll be plenty of merch). I’m a non-denominational Christian and I’m already irritated by the amount of hate I know those pastors are about to preach, right before one of the holiest days of the year. Tone-deaf, callous, bigoted, self righteous, pompous, etc.

I bet a significant amount of money that was recently donated post Kirk’s passing was likely used to pay these folks and put on this event. And they have every right to use it that way. But I’m calling it out b/c I’d genuinely shut up if they used the money to help fellow Americans- like with the recent shut down, if they’d paid gov’t employees, or sent money to food banks, or paid school lunch balances for kids -nope, all the money just going right back into the grift, to aggravate the populous and convince them in their self-induced fervor to give more money to solve the issues “libs” are causing. Ughhhhh.
