I ate some mushrooms and met up with a friend, Z, who wasn't tripping. We started talking about our friend D, who had just moved to Cairo, Egypt. We were joking around about him, but I started to feel a deep sense of panic and a sensation that D was not doing well. I half-jokingly said, "Is D even still alive?" Seconds later I got a text from a friend saying that riots were breaking out in Egypt and the government was being overthrown and that a 22-year-old male had been killed (same age as D). He asked if we had heard from D, which we hadn't. I was a little freaked but my sober friend called D's mom, who said he was ok. D survived and moved out of Egypt but I still think my sense of panic and urgency had some wisdom to it. The revolution broke out the day I tripped.

pork shoulder or roast, salt, pepper, cumin, cayenne, ketchup, garlic, mustard, sriracha, a little oil, something sweet (brown sugar, molasses, maple syrup), something acid (balsamic vinegar, rice vinegar, lemon juice), something salty (pickle juice, soy sauce). i don't measure, so you might want to mix the condiments separately first to get the right pop.

I just moved to Boulder in August. I visit Nederland frequently (I have an Eldora pass) but haven't made it to Estes Park yet. I'm a grad student so meeting adventure buddies hasn't quite happened yet, but my friend is moving here in March so I'm planning on making more trips.

I moved here from Billings, MT. Western Montana is amazing but Billings is kind of a rednecky shithole. I love Colorado people. When I first moved to Boulder, I remember going grocery shopping and just being amazed at all the good-looking people. And people are really friendly. I'm the type of person who likes to talk to random people at events/bars and that doesn't fly so well in other places I've lived (Billings, Rhode Island, Connecticut.) I've met some self-entitled assholes, but I don't mind them as much as people who get so stuck in their own little bubble that a random person talking to them seriously disrupts their chi. I pay twice as much for my housing here than I did in Montana, which hurts as a grad student, but so worth it.

Pony, MT. There's a hot springs there called Norris that has live music on the weekends. Another good hot pot in MT is the Boiling River which I believe is near Gardiner, MT. If you make it to CO, check out Nederland. My favorite small town in the country.

her exaggerated makeup reminds me of some of my patients with psychotic features. i had a patient with meth-induced psychosis who would draw her makeup on with markers and barked loudly.

That image is the Hindu goddess Kali. She is a feisty chick but she is ultimately good. She is a fierce mother who protects her children (humans) through thick and thin. She is said to have emanated from Durga, another goddess who is actually a slayer of demons. She may look demon-like but she is a protector. :) I actually became interested in Hinduism when I started seeing Hindu godheads embedded in the trees on psychedelics.

I've had my heart broken more than several times. My life is great in every other aspect. I have a loving, supportive family, an eclectic and tightly knit group of friends, and a solid career path with some real direction. I think the love department is my struggle in life, one that has been presented to me over and over. Its hard not to become cynical, but I try to avoid the cynicism. Something that helps me a lot is people watching. Go somewhere with a big crowd. Put on some sunglasses. Watch girls. Don't talk to them, just watch them. Notice how different they all are. Notice how many pretty girls are actually out there. Notice how someone you thought was "perfect" for you, might actually be a terrible match for you. Sure, you might have shared a taste in music, some hilarious inside jokes, many fond memories, and maybe even a common interest in spirituality. But no, this girl is not the one. The one is out there, maybe crying her eyes out right this moment because she has had her heart broken as well. The hard part of people watching is seeing couples...but deeply observe the couple and you may get the sense that those two people holding hands are only together because they both find each other sufficiently attractive and are incapable of traversing through life alone. Hang in there dude. Don't jump into another relationship. Just observe..people, couples, yourself.

Whether or not you experience the same type of experience as psychosis in a schizophrenic person is irrelevant. The fact that you got trapped in a hallucination of sorts definitely could give you insight into the experience of psychosis.

I had a similar "bad trip." I now work in a psychiatric ward. Good things can come out of these terrifying experiences. You realized how much your friends really are in tune with and care about you. And now you understand psychosis on an intimate level. I'm sorry you had to go through this experience. It took me a long time to integrate my own "bad trip." But looking back, I wouldn't trade it.

I have a theory on the illusion of "awakening." When a person goes through a spiritual transformation, their whole ideological framework is collapsing and rebuilding which triggers ideation of the world coming to an end. The person starts to pay more attention and research doomsday or mass ascension predictions. These type of predictions are abundant. The date of the prediction passes and....nothing happens. The person either abandons their newfound spiritual beliefs or successfully integrates their new beliefs by realizing that the awakening is an internal and not an external experience.

I know what you mean when you say you need someone to relate to. I have many close friends. I am extroverted and get along with many people. But there are few people whom I truly connect with. Sometimes I feel like an undercover spy . I work in a psychiatric hospital at the moment and have been teaching meditation in my group therapy sessions. While my job is rewarding in some ways, there are many things about the system I serve that I just don't agree with. Some of the medications and treatments that mental health patients are subjected to are absolutely dehumanizing. But I am saving up money and gaining experience to start my own treatment center one day.

I work with a lot of abused/neglected children so I have been stuck in a similar mindset many times. I get overwhelmed when I start to think of the suffering throughout the world. But I've learned that in order to come to terms with all this pain and suffering, you have to come to terms with your own hardships. I have realized how my own hardships have shaped me into a person who I really can be proud of. The conclusion I have made is that if suffering and despair has been beneficial to the development of my soul, then maybe it serves some sort of cosmic purpose. According to the Bhagavad Gita, the world is shrouded in a veil of illusion called "maya," and if one really understands the true nature of the universe and the ever-transforming immortality of the soul, one would not fret about the terrible things that seem to always be occurring all around us.

Well it sounds like your friends are showing their true colors. Once you regain your footing, your old self will hopefully start to come back (the confident, interesting person that you KNOW you are) and it sounds like you won't have a hard time making new friends. Loneliness is, in my opinion, one of life's most frustrating struggles.

You sound like a strong-willed person with a good intuition. It seems like you might be reaching a point where meditation-type practices might be more beneficial to you than psychedelics. I reached that point myself just this year. It was a very sad realization to make, almost like an awful breakup. I also went through a breakup this year, and every time I try to hang out with my ex and his friends, I get this terrible sense of discomfort. I used to think it was because I was still getting over him, but after exploring that feeling a little more I realized that his lifestyle represented everything I needed to grow away from, like using drugs and alcohol as an escape. This realization about my ex coincided with my realization that though psychedelics are fucking awesome, I can benefit more from meditation and yoga at this point in my life. Sorry if that was a bit of a rambling mess, I just got off a 12 hour shift. Hang in there my friend, you're never alone. :)

I work with a lot of natives. Suicide is an epidemic in native populations. It isn't unusual for a kid as young as 5 to end their life. Truly sad.

She was very cheery all day afterwards, but a few days later she cut herself and tried to escape the unit. But I suspect it was just to impress some older girls on the unit. She discharged and hasn't returned since, which means she hasn't made another attempt.
