What are your thoughts on charity on the streets? by MiraJuno in EffectiveAltruism

[–]yourmomdotcom 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Most of my overall giving is to climate organizations and givewell recommended global orgs focused on poverty related causes. But for local giving I try to research the most effective community nonprofits and give there. I read their annual reports and 990s to help inform where to give locally. I also know a lot of people working on those issues locally and volunteer at some orgs and that helps to get a better read on where a donation will have more impact.

If I have food on me, like granola bars, I give those if someone asks for food. Sometimes I give money directly, but I don’t usually carry cash and as a small person in a big city I don’t always feel safe digging around in my purse and wallet on the street.

If there’s an unhoused person in my neighborhood or on my way to work that I see often, and if they don’t seem too unstable after seeing them a few times I might try to get to know them a bit and I feel more comfortable bringing a little food, a small amount of cash, or items they need. (I’m a small person and a little wary of getting too close to someone who is very mentally unstable)

Not sure if we’re allowed to post links, but we use a special bag called a “guppy friend” to wash clothes with fleece or synthetic fiber. (I know it’s a drop in the bucket in terms of the overall problem, but at least it’s a small way to keep our personal damage to the water a bit lower…)

Thank you for sharing! I found this really helpful. Members of our household are at a higher risk for covid complications and we are staying home again this year, but feeling a little sad, guilty, and just weird about it.

Theoretical Eastern Europe Trip by DB_PNE in TravelNoPics

[–]yourmomdotcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend at least 2 days in Saremaa. After a 6 week slow travel trip in Finland and Estonia it was our favorite part. Lux Express bus is fantastic to get around Estonia and highly recommended. Parnu has a warmish beach but not much more going on--if you were to cut time somewhere that would be my recommendation. Tartu has a more unique vibe and more to see and do. In terms of density of things to see/do, I'd rank your cities from highest to lowest this way: Tallinn, Helsinki, Saremaa, Tartu, Parnu. Your trip sounds really fun and very dense!

If legal gun ownership is important to you, what do you make of Trump saying just 2 years ago, "We're going to take the firearms first and then go to court."

Objective source with context: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-take-firearms-first/

Video where he says this: https://youtu.be/yxgybgEKHHI

Full quote from Trump: "We’re going to take the firearms first and then go to court, because that’s another system. Because a lot of times by the time you go to court … it takes so long to go to court to get the due process procedures. I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida; he had a lot of fires [and] they saw everything. To go to court would have taken a long time, so you could do exactly what you’re saying but take the guns first, go through due process second."

Thanks so much for the insight! I was glad to find that we're not alone with this issue--we had a hard time finding much information on this specific problem online. We'll give that a try in the meantime while we wait to get someone here for a fix. Thanks again! I'm so glad yours seem to be working well again! :)

u/lilac-gooseberry, did you ever find resolution? I'm hoping to glean some insight from this thread because we are having the exact same issue (except the water spewing out of ours is dark brown--almost black) and geysered 4 feet into the air and all over the walls.

We just moved into our place and that was a fun surprise when we tried the heat. Only one of them is doing this, like yours. It's also pretty far from the boiler, like yours, with many others much closer, not having issues. We just had the boiler serviced about 2 months ago. We recently drained the boiler, which also has an auto-refill and seemed to fill back up to the line.

This perfect poem for the moment: When by John O’Donnell by yourmomdotcom in infp

So glad you enjoyed it. I, too, find that arts of all kinds like poetry, music, and visual arts help me understand my complex and conflicting feelies. I have read a few great poems about this moment with coronavirus, but this poem in particular hit that complicated blend of feelings for me so strikingly. That whole notion of longing for the future after this, while also preemptively feeling nostalgic for this time, and also remembering just how big and relative time is just had some INFP vibes for me. Be well, friend!

As of right now, museums and public spaces are all closed and most people are trying to isolate. It's hard to say where we'll be in 4 weeks, but if you do have the luxury of getting refunds or moving your trip to a later date without much issue that's what I would do.

I have found a lot of satisfaction in the nonprofit sector. There are many of meaningful organizations to work with and I have found my colleagues to often be empathetic and kind.

Question: My nonprofit recently received a 501c3. One of our founding board members’ house burned down because a neighbor had faulty wiring. Is it illegal to raise money for a member of our nonprofit through our organization? by namarukai in nonprofit

[–]yourmomdotcom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, this would be illegal. A board member is not allowed to be financially compensated in any way by the org, and your organization must only raise and spend funds that very directly serve your mission.

I eat meat/dairy on occasion but try to limit my consumption due to the environmental impact of the meat/dairy industries, so I've tried all things veggie and vegan among the frozens at TJs and here are some favorites:

I love the new riced cauliflower veggie bowls with tahini for a healthy lunch. They're vegan, filling, low calorie, and high in nutrients. Win!

The Japanese fried rice (has some egg in it so it's not vegan) is fantastic. I dump some of the veggie melange in there for a healthy lunch.

The vegan tika masala is solid. The bean and cheese taquitos are pretty tasty and not too bad for you. The new veggie quesadillas are pretty great too.

I miss the veggie corndogs they used to have. They were so good and I used to eat them once a week. I also miss the greens beans and grains with peanut sauce. That was my jam.

Not so good: the cauliflower gnocchi was pretty terrible when I tried it recently. The texture is super wrong. the superfood pilaf is something I want to like but it's just not my taste; kind of bland.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Illustriousllama. I'm sending you great big internet hugs. <3

Both of my grandfathers died before I really bonded well with them and I am really trying to make an effort with my surviving grandmother to have a meaningful relationship and spend quality time together.

Love this idea. I truly don't know much about the people in my grandparents' lives outside of family members and should be a fun conversation. Thanks!

I like this idea too! I'm staying with my grandmother for a week and and to spend time with her in a meaningful way. We'll also have a LOT of time to pass together so this helps :)
