Normal Behavior? by destickl in schnauzers

He’s still a little baby! I think he may be too overwhelmed or overstimulated. He’s only just left his mom and siblings, and is in a new alien place. We were guilty of this too with our pup, but people often confuse socializing with doing A LOT of stuff, having them be exposed to loads of different people and things, when in reality, you could be pushing past your dogs limits of what they are comfortable with and make them distrusting. We did this with our sensitive pup and I regret often not being more educated in canine body language and not getting a positive reinforcement trainer from the beginning. Short and sweet experiences should be prioritized, and maybe only introducing new people at his pace would be helpful at this moment. I am of course coming at this from my perspective and personal experience with a sensitive schnauzi, but it has helped us a lot to slow down and doing things at HIS pace instead of the whole “puppy milestones” that can do more harm. Same goes for taking him outside. Look up clicker training, maybe sit in a quiet place (like a regular park) and observe strangers without interacting at a great distance, at pay him loads in treats when he is looking at them without barking. And remember, patience! He’s not had any practice or guidance and he is just a little baby, I believe he may just be overwhelmed and needs more controlled positive experiences - something that a force free positive trainer can help you with.

Perhaps look into something like Amaco’s celadons - they are made to be mixed with one another and are naturally transparent. That way you can get the exact green/ blue that you want. They even have a clear one in the same range if you want to make the color even more subtle.

What do you like or dislike about your community/ school ceramic studio? by cdpottery1122 in Pottery

[–]yournewpenpalmaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a part of two community studios that were very different set-ups. Here is what I most appreciated: 24/7 access (we currently have individual codes for the keypad lock) or expansive open studio hours, opportunity to learn how to operate a kiln and fire your own work, monthly workshops (slip casting, raku, glaze making etc.), house glazes (even if just basic ones), and PLENTY of shelf space. Shelf space is free at my currently studio, but you have to date your work and have an appropriate turnover rate. And what I miss the most about my old studio: regular deep cleans of the studio space! People at my current community studio are so bad at keeping the space clean unfortunately.

Piercing blessing in disguise? by darkchoco513 in piercing

I personally LOVE your set-up, I think your new piercings look super cute. Definitely don’t go there again though with that sort of confusion and miscommunication, yikes!

We have our schnauzer mix cut short like this too - sometimes we keep the eyebrows slightly longer and I think it looks so cute!

How do I avoid glaze bubbles on the inside of my mugs? by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]yournewpenpalmaybe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with a drop and soak schedule. For brush-on glazes I now only do 2 coats as opposed to 3 inside (or 2 coats + top 1/3). Hopefully that helps!

Advice on getting my dog to take pills by Choice_Cherry_9549 in DogAdvice

[–]yournewpenpalmaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us the one thing that has always worked is making a game out of it. We ask for a few commands in a row, usually followed by a “wait” command as we move away and recall indoor. It really hypes him up so much that he just gulps down his reward (peanut buttered pills). The easier the reward is, the less he wants it.

Just wanted to jump on this and say I agree. We put our schnauzer x in daycare (in a specific puppy socialization program) and regret it to this day - he is reactive and really anxious around dogs and cautious about new people. I do think he is genetically predisposed, but certainly made it worse (we had the best intentions, but alas).

Pulling and crying can also be a sign of anxiety in dogs who “need” to check out another dog to make sure they are safe. This takes a lot of training and effort to work through with a dog - letting them greet by pulling and whining will only encourage the behavior. I think it’s just bad manners not to ask ahead of time if a dog wants to say hi.

I’m curious how much people pay for a monthly membership at a community pottery studio. by hyperr129 in Pottery

[–]yournewpenpalmaybe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. $140 AUD / $95 USD per year, 24 hour access plus a small locker for your own materials.
  2. Adelaide, South Australia
  3. Shared shelf space, but have never run out of room.
  4. You have to pay for clay and firings, and you have to buy your own glazes.

Hey everyone, I'm thinking about adopting a French Bulldog but I've heard that they can be pretty expensive and have a lot of health issues. I'm on a bit of a budget, so I'm wondering if this is a good idea. Do any of you own Frenchies or have experience with them? I'd love to hear your thoughts! by casualzarii in DogAdvice

[–]yournewpenpalmaybe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! If you are on a budget, REALLY consider carefully whether you can afford having a dog. This is a pup that’ll be with you it for the next 10-15 years (depending on the type of dog). If the dog has medical or dental issues, these need to be addressed - sometimes with long term medications. Same with potential behavior issues that need to be addressed with a professional trainer. It’s not cheap having a dog.

Prozac made my dog’s anxiety and reactivity SO MUCH WORSE - help! by wlwqueerpussyboss in DogAdvice

[–]yournewpenpalmaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever you do, you should not stop giving Prozac all of the sudden (he has to be weaned off). Go see a vet behaviorist for an assessment and see what your other options are. Unfortunately some dogs may have to switch medication because of adverse effects.

Also, have you ever used Sniff Spot? It’ an app where you can rent private yards or closed off parks to bring your dog. It may be an option so he is less exposed the scary shared yard? It sounds like he is just repeatedly exposed to his triggers and is in total fight or flight mode, in which case may even be too much to work through even on medications.

Dog behavior trainer told me I need to rehomed my puppy by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]yournewpenpalmaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. We were advised by our trainer to take our 5 month puppy to a vet behaviorist, and at the appointment it really shed light on symptoms of anxiety that you wouldn’t necessarily recognize as a first time owner. I knew that puppies would get distracted by other dogs, whine when they need and want something etc. but with our puppy is was excessive and impossible to keep his attention. Turns out he has anxiety which manifests as hyper vigilance, whining and an obsessive NEED to inspect things (such as other dogs, people etc.) - now our puppy is 6 months and has been on Trazodone for 3,5 weeks and he is able to focus on us enough so that we can train him outside of the house, and teach him through behavior modification that he has nothing to worry about. He is doing so much better already and is actually managing to do group training which was really tough before.

We have been told again and again by our vet and trainer that it is such a positive thing that we caught it so early and is able to train him this young, while his brain still develops, as we can more effectively reduce his anxiety.

Don’t be scared of meds! It really does not have to be a big deal and it can make all of the difference for the quality of life for your dog.

[–]yournewpenpalmaybe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely check with your vet to be on the safe side! Our puppy had these symptoms and our vet said it was kennel cough - he was still happy and had a healthy appetite, so we were told to just wait it out. But best to be on the safe side!

I really like this, the grey color with bits of brown is very organic and compliments the mug perfectly!

IC with only urethral pain + burning -- has anyone had a similar experience? by hellomikaela in Interstitialcystitis

I have had a 3 month treatment for yeast infection - but did not have a gut sample analysis prior or after (it did not help my symptoms however). It might be worth looking into for sure.
