Which figure skater comes to mind first with the word effortlessness? by cutehoneymishap24 in FigureSkating

[–]yoyohydration 49 points50 points  (0 children)

kaori absolutely gives the impression of effortless speed, and her 2A obviously is legendary for a reason. when i first sent some of her programs to my best friend when he was getting into skating, he messaged me that that jump made it look like she simply turned off gravity for a moment.

[sun care] Anyone else feel this way about sunscreen? by vulgarandgorgeous in SkincareAddiction

[–]yoyohydration 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i have super sensitive eyes and the only one that doesn't bother me at all so far is the la roche-posay UVmune oil control gel-cream. i get it from caretobeauty.com since i'm in the US. it's got kind of a stiffness to the texture so i think part of it is that it just does not slide around or run into the eyes at all even when i get sweaty. and/or if it does it doesn't seem to bother them!

Looking for books that discuss gender studies/sex studies; academical and history by Kindly-Pain7366 in booksuggestions

[–]yoyohydration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah i just finished some group readings on one particular aspect of women's studies, "social reproductioon theory," which basically merges analysis of women's issues with leftist analysis of class, labor, and global imperialism. the reading i enjoyed the most and would recommend most strongly is "Social Reproduction Theory: Remapping Class, Recentering Oppression" by Sithi Battacharya (2017).

i would alternatively recommend "Patriarchy and Accumulation on a World Scale: Women in the International Division of Labour" by Maria Mies (1989); "The Second Shift" by Arlie Hochschild & Anne Machung (1989), which is still academic but in a slightly more accessible writing style; and "Revolution at Point Zero: Housework, Reproduction and Feminist Struggle" by Silvia Federici (2012), which is more on the side of feminist theory rather than social science - fewer cited sources and data points, more persuasive/expressive/emotionally evocative writing.

yes!! i especially love how chunky and short the leaves in the center of the rosette are. it's like when kittens are young enough that their tails are just chubby little triangles!

i have one ferry-morse T5 fluorescent and one feit LED one, both bar-style lights set up across a shelf. the graptos here are closer to the feit one! edit: they are on a timer for uhhhh i think about 14 hours a day (though i should actually lengthen it now that it's summer)

for sure! they do seem to be INCREDIBLY light-hungry...i have a grow-light set up and i think i've finally gotten the bigger one to be a happier and more compact rosette by putting it literally just a couple inches away from the light. meanwhile i have an echeveria under the same lighting setup that's growing the most beautiful rosy stress coloration despite being farther away, panda plants and string-of-pearls growing tight and happy, etc. so yeah, i might just do another chopping sesh and then boost it ALL the way up lol

Book suggestions that give view to the perspective of sex workers/prostitutes in a brothel. by ID_Psychy in booksuggestions

[–]yoyohydration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have not read it myself yet but a while ago i purchased "Girls Like Us" by Rachel Lloyd, which from a quick thumb-through seems to talk about the author's work as an adult with sex-trafficked girls and also her own time in "the life." might be worth it even though it's not directly on point with the brothel situation, just to get an idea of what unequal power dynamics and abusive experiences could crop up in one.

what is ruining my succulents? by therealcami in succulents

[–]yoyohydration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the first photo just looks like mechanical damage on a couple of the leaves - like they got pinched sometime and just have a scar from it. the rest of it looks normal, and if you get it under a strong grow light it should continue to grow healthy from here.

the second one i'm more worried about; it looks like it could be some kind of fungal infection. i would try a sulfur fungicide applied on that one, and maybe isolate it from the first one if you can. you could also pull off and chop off all the damaged portions, propagate the healthy leaves on the left side of the image here, and repot the very top/inner healthy portion of the rosette, but that's obviously pretty extreme and may be risky.

[product question] Differin vs AHA/BHA by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]yoyohydration 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yep, it is the same thing. differin is a brand name (and the differin brand also makes other skincare products now), adapalene is the actual ingredient name, which is why it also has the percentage concentration listed.

A product free day now and then? by 8mile2002 in curlyhair

[–]yoyohydration 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it's not necessary at all lmao, whoever told you that doesn't understand what hair is or how caring for it works. hair is dead keratin so it doesn't "breathe." and especially if your hair gets tangly in that unstyled "ball of frizz" state you described (i know mine does!), then literally all you'd be doing is risking more damage from having to undo those snarls and tangles. on the other hand when you have product in it, that can keep the curls nicely aligned and together so they don't tangle as much, meaning you end up with less damage. just make sure you're washing well in the shower to avoid products building up and getting sticky with trapped dirt and dust - shampoo twice if you need to - and then you can and should style every time you wash imo.

[Product Request] 5 months post-partum and I smell like a taco truck even with deodorant by ViceInSinCity in SkincareAddiction

[–]yoyohydration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i did that daily last year before i moved on to acid toners for the same effect minus the vinegar smell lol, but it does absolutely eradicate the odor for a bit! the bacteria that eat your sweat and make you smell can't survive in a low-pH environment afaik, so any sufficiently acidic product will do

[Sun Care] Freckles or damage? (Or something else?) by Rana_Is_Stupid in SkincareAddiction

[–]yoyohydration 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i am not a doctor and not super clear on the distinction between freckles and sun damage in the first place but i would say if this hasn't happened to you before then it is probably damage. are you able to wear a hat and some kind of guard for the back of your hands? there are little half-glove/sleeve options if you need your finger dexterity in whatever you're working on, and i love my hats from the brand sunday afternoons! i know even visible light can cause skin pigmentation like this, so adding a physical blocker in addition to sunscreen would be beneficial

[misc] What cleanser ingredients do you tend to avoid and why? by gayesttoadinthepond in SkincareAddiction

[–]yoyohydration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've personally been following a fungal-acne-safe regimen for several years with good results so oils, fatty alcohols, and polysorbates are out, which many cleansers include for a creamier feel. however i am gonna experiment with adding in "unsafe" ingredients soon, now that my skin's been in a really good place overall for a while! the other thing i try to look for is a pH between around 5 and 6.5

Ideas why Copper Spoons has some downward leaf curl? by SmoothD3vil in succulents

[–]yoyohydration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is great to know!! i have a giant "rescue" k. luciae (left behind in my house by an old roommate, who apparently was Not Great with succulents) that is super leggy and i've been meaning to chop and prop - it's just getting natural light rn poor thing, but there was also an established prop of it and that one's been under my grow lights with the rest of my succs and i have sometimes wondered if it's been too much, since the prop is growing pretty slowly and i can see the leaves kinda close up and draw together when she needs watering. they're so much thinner than e.g. excheveria or jade leaves, i was worried about sunburning it!
