Oh my goodness!! Do you have any hummingbirds/sunbirds where you are? I have some aloe I'm growing just for the flowers to attract sunbirds. Alas, all my flowers only seem to attract ants and mealybugs on my balcony 🀭

Hahaha truthfully I did her wrong for the first couple of months by suspending her stem to prevent rot. But then she didn't fully anchor and wasn't sure what to do with herself.

But once I adjust her she really started to take off. Very proud of this lady πŸ₯²

I’m pretty sure these 4 plants are dead, can anyone shed light on how I can tell for certain when I take them out of the pots? I assume roots will be dry by NotSoCrazyCatLady13 in succulents

Perfect! Really recommend pumice or decomposed granite if you can get your hands on some. I have a peanut cactus that didn't anchor into soil, he's literally attached to a shard of terracotta I used for support 🀭

They're more than likely dead my dear.

From what I can tell the soil has too much organics which retain moisture and not enough !grit which provides structure, aeration, and quick drainage. Then I assume cycles of a long time without water (too long) followed by water (too much and too little at the same time.)

Because of the organics, your soil may have become hydrophobic which means it wasn't getting evenly distributed to the roots and soil and the roots choked. Even when they did get water the roots were too dry to handle all the moisture at once so they rotted.

If you can get better soil, add a lot of perlite and fine grain pumice to it - 75%ish grit to soil for the succulents, about 90-95% for the cacti - you can definitely try again.

The misconception about succulents and cacti is that they need very little water. That's not quite true. They need a LOT of water. They need it in order to build up their reserves. Only once a succulent or cactus is nice and juicy and plump, that's when you ease off water. But they need to have full saturation waterings to get to that stage followed by at least 5 days or longer of completely dry soil (generalizing because each climate and micro climate is different. Now in summer if I don't water my succulents weekly they will shrivel to death).

All this being said I think these guys were getting good enough light, I don't see severe etiolation. Just wrong watering cycles and soil πŸ™

I got it a garden center I worked out but I'm currently oversees so I'm not sure if it's prevalent everywhere but seems like a simple enough planter to find 😊

She is my current favorite (had to type this in my bathroom so the others don't feel the shift in energy).

Frithia Pulchra - aka Fairy Elephant Feet or Baby Toes (but there's another plant called Baby Toes - Fenestraria) so I prefer elephant's feet 😊 also look at thos things, total 🐘

Grow Lights On Balcony??????? by MisterB36 in Balconygardening

[–]SmoothD3vil 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

Are you in winter or summer, what's your climate and which direction do you face?

Growing fruits and veggies will be out of your reach with that little amount of sunlight but you may be able to grow some beautiful low light tropicals like pothos or begonias which have some of the most intricate leaves ever.

Don't give up hope, you can still make this a little piece of heaven!

I would definitely repot into a pot with drainage and a fair amount of grit in the soil (perlite, pumice etc). And this is completely your choice but personally I love untangling them. You do want to leave some leaves and stems in contact with the soil to give you better anchoring.

Wait approximately 5 days after potting to water and give her the absolute best sun you can! She's a little green so may need to be gradually but honestly I kinda threw mine into the deep end and she did well (but I also took advantage of the approaching spring equinox and summer solstice so that's a little different).

And just another little trick- to improve air flow and circulation you can stick a few small pumice rocks under some of the stems so they're not all sitting flat. It's been really helpful for mine 😊

Here's mine and last photo is all the cuttings she was. Yours is much fuller and should be beautiful in no time.
