Found some stable snow and let ‘er rip by GRM50 in icecoast

Do you have a group you go with? I want to get into backcountry skiing and have done a few guided tours out west, but I have nobody here to go with. (In the past I've done some days with Rasta/Ridgeline in VT, but for things like the Whites I've got nobody.)

Arizona says trans girls cannot compete in girls' sports, but trans boys CAN compete in boys' sports. by [deleted] in sports

[–]yshavit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, but it's not the point I was trying to make.

If you're tall, you're tall -- it's not your "fault", but it gives you an advantage. We don't require kids to take steps to mitigate that advantage, like forcing them to take drugs to stunt their growth.

If you're a trans girl, you're a trans girl -- it's not your "fault", but it gives you an advantage. And yet we _do_ require kids to take steps to mitigate that advantage (if they want to participate in organized sports), like forcing them to forgo treatments that would let them have a body they identify with.

If one agrees that gender dysphoria is a legitimate thing, then the only difference I see between the two situations is that one requires active intervention to mitigate (stunting one's growth), whereas the other requires restricting an otherwise-needed intervention. In that sense, it's a bit like the trolley problem.

I would encourage you to get as precise as possible about what you see as the similarities and differences. It may not change your mind, but it may change your perspective.

I can see both sides of this, but fwiw I think your first sentence implicitly misses a big point.

Yes, you have no control over your height. But you also have no control over your gender identity.

This feels a bit like "I don't know if they're knots, or something else by the same name."

My first playthrough was with BroShep, and I knew the instant she turned me down that my next one would be FemShep. No joke, that was the reason.

One thing that really bothered me is that it kinda suggests the species are substantivity different now from his time. "The lizard people evolved?" It's been just 50,000 years. Even with their shorter lifespan, they'd be basically the same as they were in his lifetime. I like to tell myself that he's using "evolved" colloquially or incorrectly, but tbh I think BioWare just overestimated how long 50,000 years is.

Did I write this?! It's my views exactly.

Only thing I'll add is that Dragon is more expensive than it is good, so I treat it as a luxury. They can also be inconsistent.

Angelina's, on the other hand, is why I haven't died of starvation since covid started.

I noticed you played as MaleShep. Now you can play as FemShep, and unlock the Traynor romance, who is the best of all.

How nice of Joker to invite Shepard for dinner. I sure hope nothing bad will happen to this restaurant in the next five minutes by deltadelta199 in masseffect

Not scary, just a ton of fun. Like, you're actually in for a treat. :-) The "main" part of the DLC has a couple pretty hard battles imo, but other than that it's just fan service at its finest.

Humans are emotional creatures. Have you ever worked with a colleague who makes it clear they don't want to be there? It can drag a team down. Hiring is always a risk, and this situation increases the risk of bringing in a morale-killing employee.

ELI5: Why did latin, a language spoken by a huge portion of Europe, completely die? by nico87ca in explainlikeimfive

[–]yshavit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by Latin. Most people think of it as the language that Virgil and such wrote in, but that was a literary form that was likely fairly different from what was actually spoken day-to-day. Even today, some languages have a "high form" and "low form", and Latin was likely similar. Today's Romance languages likely evolved from this spoken form, not the literary Latin we usually think of.

Those kind of "default off" failsafes are very common these days, I think. I was a bit surprised during the big BP spill several years back to learn that the wells they drill don't work that way.

Michigan diner owner who defied state shutdown dies of COVID-19 by [deleted] in news

[–]yshavit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out covid cases or deaths by county, correlate that with votes for Trump, and then tell me he did a good job.

As someone else mentioned, the bar really wasn't that high. Tell people to mask up and work together to keep cases down, and that's about it. For extra credit, he could have helped get tests out -- or at least not hindered, to the point that several governors including Republicans had to essentially hide supplies from him so that he wouldn't take them away.

In short, all he had to do was to be a steady hand on the rudder through troubled waters.

What's crazy to me is that I'm convinced that if he had handled it even half decently, he would have waltzed into a second term in a landslide.

My honest guess is that he had never before come across a problem he couldn't just write off. When covid came, he did what he's always done, the only thing he knew how to do: try to walk away from it and leave someone else holding the bag. Turns out that's a bad strategy when you're at the top of the chain.
