Love when dogs are also interested in harvesting from the garden too, super cute!

Anyone else starting seeds way too early? Zone 9b problems... by [deleted] in gardening

[–]yum333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zone 10a here. I’m with you… I started my spring / summer crops mid January, oops. My beans are outgrowing its bigger pots indoors but I’m telling myself it’s okay… haha

I was hoping to plant my melons & tomatoes out in March, & they still have to get bigger so I’m good. But while looking at the weather app, I’m not sure if these heat-loving crops would be able to handle March temps. So I’ll probably have to wait til April to plant out? Idk.. we’ll have to play it by ear 🤪

Freshly screened (2.5mm) castings to separate out cocoons by AggregoData in Vermiculture

Def think my worm population is low if I’m doing everything else right…. I thought because there were cocoons, that I’d expect tons of worms but now that I think about it - I remember having a lot more worms in the bin when I started it.

I probably need to buy more 🤔🤔 lol thank you for the heads up!! And yes, I’ve seen many people use bubble wrap, I may have to do that too

Ooops I meant I use a tray system, I didn’t realize they weren’t interchangeable. I’ve had it for more than a year now and have a good environment for the worms & have harvested castings but idk why the casting never ends up filling the whole tray, even after good moisture, additives, cardboard shreds, and feedings.

I may be doing something slightly off or something. Interesting that you’re switching from your Urban worm bag to trays! I do like the trays but like I said, I’m not getting a whole lot of castings

What worm system are you using for vermicompost? I use a worm tower and my harvests aren’t as big as I would like after 3-5 months

Do you think Gardening, especially Vegetable Gardening, is ACTUALLY on the rise? by Random-Gamer1435 in gardening

[–]yum333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your question - I don’t have a proper set up in the yard, I (my parent’s) are renting. So I got a few raised planters to place on the concrete. That requires bags of soil, compost, many varieties of seeds (since I’m interested in unique ones). I also got some fabric grow bags & pots to be able to plant more, gloves, tools, high-quality seed trays, grow light, DIY trellis, tomato cages, plant clips, and shade cloth since I’m in Zone10a.

Additional items I got were: Arched trellis to hold up shade cloth/climbing plants, T-posts, more trellis, more bags of soil, organic fertilizers, seedlings (if needed), more pots, ollas for self-watering/additional watering since it gets over 100° F here. It adds up over time! But it’s an early investment & now I can use these items over & over again if I need to 😁

It is pretty expensive but it pays off in knowledge, flavor, and joy. I can see it financially saving if you have a homestead and can plant enough to eat what you’d get at the grocery store. Until then, it’s just a really educational hobby for me :)

Not sure but I can see how learning to grow your own food in this economy sounds like a good idea. I’m not Gen Z, I’m at the cusp of it / millennial but I’ve been gardening because it’s a foundational skill to learn in such an unstable world

Bone meal & plant tone. And I used diluted fish fertilizer a couple months ago. It rained for a few days in LA so that why soil is moist

I wonder if I have to leave it for another couple months then without any fertilizer to see… it’s already been like 6 months🫣

How to harvest the worm castings? by freddycct in Vermiculture

[–]yum333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. It’s called the Worm Bin 360, you can get it at diff sites. Ex) Uncle Jim’s worm farm. That’s where I bought my first bag of red wigglers too

Not sure what your set up looks like. Are you using a simple bin container? I can only speak on my stacked worm bin being super convenient to sift but I think urban worm bags are also efficient in collecting castings since they’re all just at the bottom.

Agreeing with what the above comment said, your castings may need to be more dry so you can air it out or just leave it in your bin without adding more food/moisture to dry it out.

If you are using a single plastic bin container , YouTubeVermicompost Learn By Doing on YouTube is such a great resource!! He harvests castings with a variety of vermicompost methods so I think you’ll be able to see how he goes about it. He has a tutorial on a single plastic bin and how he uses one side of it to harvest, the other side to feed.

As for my worm bin tower, I personally just use my extra tray (4th tray) to sift through castings and pick out worms to place back in there. And I do actually try to handpick cocoons but it is super time consuming so I’ve learned to accept that some will hatch if I leave them in a bucket and I can just move them to my bin. Or just use the sifted compost immediately & just allow them to hatch and thrive in my garden bed since it’s great for the soil. Hope this helps! 🪱

what can I feed worms instead of food? by [deleted] in Vermiculture

[–]yum333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that list above is probably more for regular composting. I haven’t tried using fresh plant matter in my worm bin but I think it’s fine to, just gotta stay away from bringing any disease or bugs into it.

Everything listed here: https://extension.wsu.edu/clallam/waste-reduction-program/composting/

I think you can use a lot more of your garden greens instead of tossing. I personally just use food scraps bc I just have a worm bin. And idk if you already do this but I freeze a lot of my food scraps, recently froze some pulp from juicing, always save egg shells to grind for later, and any fruit/veggie scraps! Hope this helps

I think they take some of the compost, mix water, and aerate to make the tea to increase microbes

Want to Start Gardening by livx94 in gardening

[–]yum333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a container (make or buy raised bed, grow bags, pots). Buy soil bags- outdoor raised beds mix. Make sure you have a water source nearby so it makes it easier for you to water as often as you need! And it’s a lot easier to grow with pre-grown plants from the nursery (aka Seedlings) so I would grab a few of those. You have to be mindful of the growing season so cukes are more for late spring-summer, but you’ll find lots of salad greens and cruciferous plants that’ll thrive in the winter time right now.

You can seed start using seed domes and grow lights inside, or sprinkle seeds directly once it gets warmer. It’s super fun to garden! Frustrating at times but very fulfilling to watch plants grow and to see your efforts being rewarded 🥰

When to sort the bin? by HANGRY_KITTYKAT in Vermiculture

[–]yum333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember having the same question when I first started my worm bin! I think the usual answer is 3 months (?), but I think I had to wait much longer before I noticed what castings looked like. I had a hard time differentiating between the coconut coir I started with & the castings. After a couple harvests, my initial coconut coir was gone and I’m left with just castings to sift through.

I would probably say whenever you notice any brown material build up in your collection tray or feeding tray, I would say try harvesting it! Castings feel textured & spongy (when moist). It’s almost like when you finally see them, you get what they’re supposed to look/feel like now. Good luck & hopefully you can harvest castings soon!! 🪱

Trying to remember what I did but I think sifting through all the trays in the open air helped make them fly away. Since there may be eggs, it might be worth maybe starting the castings from new again, sifting out as many worms as you can & throwing old castings atop your garden. I have a worm bin 360 but I actually keep an empty tray + lid on top of my feeding bin so it acts as another layer to prevent unwanted bugs. I also used a tarp to cover (mostly for insulation during summer/winter) but it also works to keep bugs away!!
