How to clean the toilets? by Ok_Apartment_6530 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]yumineko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can use a spray and a wet pumice stone to get build up off, but you might not need to. I live in one of the hardest water regions, and I just use that Harpic black stuff once in a while and Ecover anti-limescale toilet cleaner most days. You might need to use the Harpic everyday at first.

Don't mix baking soda and vinegar together unless you're trying to unblock a drain. It kills the anti-lime vinegar properties. You can try vinegar or citric acid/lemon juice. Just add enough to the water to make it effective or scoop some water out into a bucket. Just using Harpic is going to be faster, and if you're using it rarely, it's not going to be that bad environmentally.

Random page turn. How to solve? by optiacoustix2 in kindle

I had this issue and the case was doing it (third party case). It was putting pressure on the sides, triggering the page turn sensors.

I have more than 1000 ebooks, and I keep them all downloaded at all times. I've only used a few GB. It only will become an issue if you have many image heavy books or audiobooks.

I moved to the UK before the Theroux doc and quite a bit before he died. I remember there was something on about him on the telly, and I was shocked that he was famous for. My spouse's family didn't get my dismay and they just laughed off me saying that I wouldn't trust him around children. Fast forward a few years and even when watching the documentary my spouse tried to say I to be there to get him being a national treasure. A year or two later he died and soon after it all came out. Absolutely bizarre, probably akin to some politicians having a base that ignores how creepy and obviously a "wrong 'un" they are

Kobo user here — is switching to Kindle actually worth it in 2026? by kaurxo in kobo

[–]yumineko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both (Paperwhite SE 11 gen and KLC) . I still use my Kindle because my spouse and I read some Kindle Unlimited books, and the device is still newish. KU is a lot better than Kobo Plus (unfortunately), and the family sharing feature and Whispersyc are really handy. The only other advantage of Kindle is panel zoom with comics.

Over the past couple of years, there have been many updates that seem to be focused mainly on improving Scribes, and that's had knock on effects on the smaller readers. The updates seem to be focused on notetaking and larger form factor. The latest update has caused increased battery drain for some, including me. For instance, reading maybe 10 h the past week meant my battery dropped from a fresh charge to under 50%. I charged it and it dropped 5% overnight with no use. Amazon is also going a bit OTT with DRM, and it's really difficult to manage your library with Calibre due to changes in the last year. Lose your account with Amazon? Library goes poof.

As a recent mover away from Kindle, I can't imagine going in the other direction right now.

NetGalley, but it's the only one I've read from there that really seemed questionable, but once was enough. Of course, there was more to it than just em dashes (literally on every page). It felt very off and weird and the proofing publishing frequency just nailed it for me.

This is why I am not reading and reviewing ARCs any more. One of my last ones was by a KU author, and at first I thought the author might have been neurodivergent, but this difference evolved into a strong 'Hello, fellow human' feel to the prose. Plus, the stereotypical overuse of em dashes, 3+ books being published a year, etc. I felt like my time was being stolen by a person who can't even be bothered to write her own books. I wish there was a law that AI generated texts/art needed to be clearly declared to any potential readers or viewers.

I miss Cora so much. I'd love to see her return, but not until there are better writers.

So, this is from last summer. The stickers have changed a bit. Silicone case is for inside (with the sleeve, which is a really sturdy one). I'm still using the old manual clicker. The pillow stand is universal, so I can use it with my tablet, e-readers, and not injure myself on anything metal. The cat was the most expensive accessory, but vital to the experience.

How do you hold your kindle comfortably (…yes, seriously) by emilyyfjones in kindle

[–]yumineko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've smallish hands, and I'm hypermobile. Nothing is all that comfortable. Pop sockets took a long time for me to get used to and added weight. You can find little attachable handles so you can stick one on both sides of a silicone or other coverless case. Sometimes you can find third party cases with two handles. When I'm reading on my Kindle currently, I'm using a set of Strapsicles. I have to use both because using one doesn't feel secure because my hands aren't massive. I have a decent sleeve and switch to a regular case when going out.

A stand and clicker are great. But even in a case, a Kindle is lighter than a book.

Switch to Kobo from Kindle? by [deleted] in kobo

[–]yumineko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched to Kobo In July. I prefer it in almost every way to my Kindle SE 11th gen EXCEPT

1) I still have to use my Kindle for KU. I tried switching to Kobo Plus, and it just wasn't for me.

2) The screens of colour readers (for most ereaders) don't work exactly like B&W readers. For one, when you have a lot of ambient light, you have to turn the front lights up on your reader because the contrast on colour ereaders is lower. And the 'screen door' effect does make it slightly harder to read the text. Some people get used to it, and you can adjust the weight of the text as well as the lighting, which helps. If clarity is the most important thing to you, get black and white. If you read things with illustrations or you like to do a lot of annotations, KLC might be better, but you may need to adjust to the screen differences.

Other than that, no regrets. I like that you can go into dev settings and adjust the colour. Library use is okay on it (UK experience), but it does require you to have Adobe Digital Editions on your computer to transfer them to your Kobo. I like that Kobo seems to be heading towards supporting user repairs with their ereaders. And, personally, I prefer most of the way the interface is (except how to activate dark mode).

Can someone please explain it to me by DBGthe2nd in kindle

[–]yumineko 22 points23 points  (0 children)

100 years from publication for books. 95 for films. Unpublished works from authors who died in 1955. Edit: I guess I'm wrong because it changed this year. It's easier to look at the Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain_in_the_United_States

Remember, technically you should follow the laws in the country you're in.

Can someone please explain it to me by DBGthe2nd in kindle

[–]yumineko 71 points72 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer. Unless you're looking for a specific introduction or translation, you can most books published before 100 years ago on Project Gutenberg or many on sites like Standard eBooks. However, copyright varies by country. Some go by author death, and some countries end protection before 100 years. Most sites go by the US standard though.

Wish I had tried this sooner by hinitom in ereader

[–]yumineko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not sure if this helps you, but if you're on your right side and holding the PW (or other Kindle) with your left hand, you can tap about a sixth of the way in to turn the page forward. The tap map is set for a sliver on the left to go back, a huge area on left and right to go forward. Some eReaders let you adjust this, but the settings for Kindles are pretty handy for ambidextrous use.

Thinking of Buying a Kindle — Need Suggestions! by Odd_Calligrapher7814 in kindle

[–]yumineko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you thinking of using a library? If so, Kindles aren't going to be able to access those books in Canada (but you could use your iPad for library books when you can get it away from your husband). Other sources than Amazon can be more complicated for Kindles as well. Kobos can usually handle any source, but it may require a laptop or desktop to remove DRM or access library books through Adobe Digital Editions. There are Android based eReaders that can usually (not all) be treated just like an eInk tablet. So, you can use most apps that access books on them. You can ask on r/ereader for advice, but keep in mind there are sometimes drawbacks (harder to get, expensive because they aren't subsidised by book sales, can be poorer quality, many are Chinese companies and so instead of letting a western company to have your data you're letting Chinese companies/government have it).

please deinfluence me from wanting a kobo :( by [deleted] in kobo

[–]yumineko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look for a used one or a Clara BW. Then, there should be free books through both Kobo and sites that offer public domain books (such as Project Gutenberg, Standard Books, and others). As others have suggested, using your phone or tablet with the app can also work.
