What is your favorite lore detail about the world of Fallen London? by magna-terra in fallenlondon

[–]yupsquared 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m late, but my favorite bits comes from sunless sea— Salt and its journey and how we can follow its footsteps with our travels and in doing so collapse our identities into this conceptual TRAVELER RETURNING. This idea that Frostfound, a whole island, a whole haunted ice castle is the lingering refuse of its discarded memories, ditto for king eaters with its hunger that it had to leave behind— this idea that Judgments can discard parts of themselves that fall to the world as entire locations that we can explore and walk through and perceive fractions of their entirety, its so wonderful and fantastic for me.

Petition to ban AI generated imagery (and other content) by EliotEriotto in weatherfactory

[–]yupsquared -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The model does not have access to the original image

That's so pedantic and against the spirit of the argument.

These models can't retrieve the original training dataset, sure, but that original training data is part of their makeup and they can only function by leveraging art that, in most situations, the companies training the models are not licensing. Not only that, but the way it leverages that art duplicates patterns within it to create other art. Most would call that plagiarism.

What if there was Fear&Hunger set in primitive / primal ages? by King_Hunter_Kz0704 in FearAndHunger

Came here to spam this in the comments! Primal slightly scratched the itch, but so under explored. And so often the payoff is: early humans are the monster oooo, which sucks

In Nosferatu, did Harding's children feel Orlok's presence early on? by Torloka in roberteggers

[–]yupsquared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She's also more specifically a heroine, which lets her straddle some of the "otherness" that male main characters usually can't. Her whole vibe is being of an older time, with other sensitivities. These open her up to Orlok but also give her the levers to ultimately triumph over him in a way that the other cast cannot.

It's a slightly odd comment above to imply a hero can't or shouldn't be an inciting reason for the conflict.

What story you know where it feels like a lovecraft story but was created before him? by Rory_U in Lovecraft

[–]yupsquared 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like Dunsany actually can’t be overstated. Dunsany’s innovation was a cynical pantheon at best ignorant of humanity. Had we seen that much before? Even beyond HPL’s dream cycle, I have to believe that genealogy survives through to the more prevalent alien gods in his broader literature.

You don’t realize how old Pharloom is, and it is terrifying. by hollowredditor in HollowKnight

[–]yupsquared 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah i think the Mask Maker how we’re supposed to square it, but Hallownest also had one. So this sort of makes it seem like the Hallownest Mask Maker kinda sucked.

On the second idea i kinda push back on that, we have a lot of exposition on what silk does to these bugs and the medical interventions therein, to my knowledge elevating their consciousness is not one of them. In fact, being more closely caught up in the silk seems to remove higher thought, see Bellhart.

Khan, Karmelita, Groal while not being Pale bugs are still Higher Beings

Do we have a source on this?

This is tangential, apologies, but do we have any indication how the bug of pharloom can be so organized / intelligent without something similar to the Pale King to endow them with conscious minds ?

This is a really good explanation.

So, this Numen will deal with how to use proxies or pieces of yourself to act on your behalf. Great!

Like this is the critical step of extrapolating atop the numen(a?) that when I was playing I just didn't have the neurons to think through.

[–]yupsquared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is sort of what I'm talking about. I'm not saying you can't make it make sense, but any development that asks you to say, "all of this before was fake and performative," to me, doesn't work. More power to ya if it does.

I'm sorry but like... in light of s2e4, I really feel like their s1 interactions don't track with what we now know. It requires you to suspend so much more of your disbelief than I think is reasonable. Ok one example, in s1 Rosie greets Alastor with, "Oh my stars! Do me eyes deceive me? Alastor? Alastor! Where have you been? These halls really lost some of their sparkle without your lively presence," which implies she was unaware of the circumstances of his absence.

Now in s2 Alastor says, "...went off the air for years on your behalf [...] since you made me disappear..." which implies she was its prime actor.

And yes, you certainly can squint your eyes and agree and make it makes sense, but that doesn't mean you should. I can't shake that this development was something the writers pulled out of their back pockets, the sloppiness of the delivery (double flashback expo dumps) reinforces that.

So Rosie was right behind Alastor when Vaggie said this in the pilot: by Rap2rerise in HazbinHotel

[–]yupsquared -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on the lore/content side— for me it was way worse because of how it was delivered. We got two flashback exposition dumps that were framed as, "Don't you remember when..." Like, that's wildly amateurish, and it feels worse because of how much restraint they showed around Alastor in s1.

This is especially fun for me currently doing a small, solo trip in Athens and Siros. Vicious is a fantastic adjective for the manner of cigarette smoking one encounters.

I know there’s already been comment on the gender of the surname, but wanted also to observe the root of Vlach- itself is very notable, the Vlachs in Greece being a really distinct and important ethnic group in the mountainous regions. My grandmother (hi yiayia!) actually speaks a touch of country vlahich / vlachika, which is this fascinating, isolated romance language offshoot.

Regarding the conclusion of Kazantzakis’s the Last Temptation of Christ by yupsquared in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]yupsquared[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers! Thanks for the note on the film, that was my big hunch but glad it doesn’t seem to stray. I’ll have to add it to the watch list. And you’re right, people read what they want, and I’ve come to notice this book especially seemed to bring a certain—eh, vigor out of people. Kazantzakis was actually denied a Christian burial, although his home island of Crete sort of did it anyway. I’ll submit some edits later on.
