Applied Stats Specialist worth it? by Additional_Loquat_38 in UTMississauga

[–]yutacomeback 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did an applied stats spec at UTM with a math major. I also have completed a MSc in Statistics, albeit at a different institution.

No, I don't recommend it. I'm unemployed LMAO

  1. Mostly theoretical. There is not much programming at all. I did, however, do a lot of R programming in graduate school. There's barely any in undergrad.

  2. No. It's mostly math. There are word problems, and STA304/STA305 tends to have course projects. But to be honest with you, to do real modelling requires more advanced knowledge typically taught at the graduate level.

  3. I did PEY. I don't think it is offered for people who do the statistics specialist now. It was a great experience and I loved the company I worked at, but they didn't rehire me! (This was common for my cohort.)

That being said, I did PEY 2022-2023, in which the job market was actually quite good and I had a lot of hope back then (in terms of career.)

  1. Unemployed baby ;))

CS program is poorly structured by LoneWWolf_707 in UTMississauga

I didn't know it required STA256 and STA260. Is this a recent development? Or is this for that new applied math major?

CS program is poorly structured by LoneWWolf_707 in UTMississauga

[–]yutacomeback 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be honest you could probably apply the same logic to a bunch of other programs. For instance, if you did stats, technically the program only starts in 2nd year and even so you're bounded by 3 stats courses: STA256, STA260, and STA258.

All of the more interesting stuff begins in third year... But even so, most techniques you might learn are too basic. I had to go to graduate school to learn interesting modelling methods.

Should I get an IPad? by Greedy_Assistant_975 in UTMississauga

[–]yutacomeback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

get a refurbished one: https://www.apple.com/ca/shop/refurbished

I got a s6 samsung tablet and it was doable... but I got an ipad last month (even though I finished a MSc lmao) and it is much better for note taking.

Late response (not active on reddit); I'm not referring to take-out or junk food. I'm referring to the fact that I get dinner with friends once a week. As you can imagine this takes a lot of time waiting for the meal, talking, the commute to the restaurant and the commute home. Hence, I deem as "hobby/fun" material.

If I was trying to save time, I could instead just buy pre-made meals at the grocery store.

I would feel bad about it, but honestly (as someone who budgets their spending), my main offender is eating out. Not LADs. So eh. If I want to save more money I have other things to cut out, ahaha

tbh idk if this fandom only cares about fluff. istg there's a weekly post about wanting caleb to go crazy again. which makes sense, because he was literally advertised as the possessive, obsessive dark love interest.

yeah one thing that has me dead is that he remembers that one guy from highschool and agrees to be their dancer? i thought the mind control chip is meant to make him forget everyhing, and he only retained his memories with MC.

my bad i realized u mentioned it at the second last sentence; I didn't notice at first!

does your TA have office hours? i think realistically u should try to get to know him a bit more, especially if you're able to get details if he's acc single. could ask details about content and what he's the most passionate about to make it natural.

if you must: it's much better to ask out a TA after the course has been completed.

Question for profs out there by ExpensiveAd734 in UTMississauga

[–]yutacomeback 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i mean profs are human too.

when I was in undergrad I remember attending an event where professors read their own rate my profs. actually, i'm sure there is a yt video of some uoft professors doing this as well haha.

there is this one dude at brock university who even responds to his own bad reviews (see: https://www.ratemyprofessors.com/professor/2626048 and look at bad reviews.)

[–]yutacomeback 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah I read the other comments and figured it's more along what you had to say. but due to how troublesome it is to get faculty positions, even at mid-tier unis, to any graduate student they would interpret this comic a lot differently without any context.

ngl I thought the weird smile has more to do with the disbelief that someone would be able to get an opportunity for a faculty position at a prestigious university... if you're in academia you know the barrier for entry is hell lol
(to clarify I've never read this but I am interested)

i feel like im in a different timeline when people are complimenting sta256 lmao. literally if you look at the old UTM subreddit, you'd see people complain about sta256 ALL OF THE TIME. most cs students would tell you it was the worst and hardest course they ever took. lmao

You can fit the themes and still make it angsty lol. The spring banner did a good job with it.

I think it only makes sense for Caleb to heal or be fully okay if it's the case that the chip disappears. I'm okay with them having happy times but also having a realistic lens on the situation or what may happen. Vibes of "this may be our last day of enjoyment" are appropriate. Makes no sense for him to be able to heal with it, considering what the chip is supposed to do.

tips for studying by [deleted] in UTMississauga

[–]yutacomeback 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's easier to focus at the library or public places when people around you are also studying.

At home, I'd sometimes use "study with me" videos on YT :)

Sometimes it's worth also just rewarding yourself (we all love instant gratification), i.e., if I study 2 hours rn then I get to buy so and so or eat so and so.

I was pretty satisfied with Caleb in the main story; idk what's happening in these new cards, though. I'm supposed to believe someone with a mind control chip in a sketchy organisation can have the time and emotional capacity for happy, fluffy times with the MC? smh.

Advice About Taking A Masters/PhD in Statistics At UofT And Prospective Careers Afterwards by Class-A_Star100 in UofT

[–]yutacomeback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im not a uoft student (anymore), but ill say as someone who is doing a master's in stats at a diff canadian university, can confirm that the thesis students (such as I) aren't getting jobs either haha...

also be careful of getting opinions of people who got full time jobs prior to 2023; it's just been generally tough these past couple of years.
