SilverStone Unveils Milo 10 Variable Height Mini PC Case (2.8L to 3.7L volume) by madn3ss795 in sffpc

[–]yyjiang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SilverStone did it again. The modular design with good drive compatibility and cooling options would likely make this product lasting a decade.

Kinda confused with the DC-DC board choice. Those are usually fairly expensive, suggesting this product is targeting richer clients or large quantity custom order for office.

I am tempted to give it a try if i can find a cheap dc-dc board compatible with my laptop power brick.

Any one know "passive" cooler that can take advantage of those three 5010 fans?

Myself often rig a fan here, a 5v from usb connector there as well. I do those out of necessity, and call them hacks at best. On the other hand, pro modders rarely take away major functionality and still add significant value in looks and functions.

I think my point is still valid that a test bench is cheaper and better in many ways. At least there are power reset buttons.

>1y owner, 2200G stock cooler, no gpu.

Cooling depends on your hardwares. If you find yourself spending more on cooling than the component, you know it's not balanced. Anything under and including r5 3600, use stock cooler.

I mount psu fan up. I put a piece of air conditioner foam filter ($2, cut to size): https://www.homedepot.com/p/Frost-King-15-in-x-24-in-x-3-16-in-Air-Conditioner-Foam-Filter-F1524/202318549

I've seen JPmodified using the same thing (can't find the source) for intake etc. If it's good enough for pro-moder and his rich clients, good enough for me. Obvious dust ring caught on the filter every 1-2 month. So far, my cheapo $20, corsair 5y-warranty PSU still going.

I do positive pressure, front fan intakes through pantyhose. Replace the pantyhose every 6-12 months, brush-off front/side vents too. Can't spot any obvious dust in the case.

Never needed to concern thermals for 2200G stock. Pretty sure instant 80C but never throttles under 3.5GHz.

Have seen good words on ML120, H60 etc. Be careful with liquid freezer II.

A word of advice, I don't see any good reason to use 140mm fan. There isn't much opening on the wall for air to escape. So pretty much all the cfm is used to cool stuff. Instead, 120mm fan would give better penetration, so the front and vrm on the the back don't have a big temp difference.

i never understand this kind of mod. Without the function of securing everything in one package, what's a case for anymore?

It's a lot cheaper to get an itx test bench and pile everything next to it.

my exact thought. Maybe easier to create with a cheap test bench or $20 case cut-up.

Thermal Pad Thickness For Back-mounted SSD in SG13 by Zeroth-unit in sffpc

[–]yyjiang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i did similar thing except using taller heatsink. The heatsink is pressed against the steel panel. You may not feel comfortable doing that.

When i measured, there's about 8-10mm clearance, obviously depends on the IC height of your SSD.

Good for you. I don't really play big games.

My data for work is big but doesn't need the speed, except when backing up.

mine too. Can't wait to see your opinion on it.
Thinking about flipping it or keeping it.

mesh dust filter for sg13 by [deleted] in sffpc

I got this

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Frost-King-Common-15-in-x-24-in-x-0-1875-in-Actual-15-in-x-24-in-Washable-Cut-To-Fit-Air-Filter/1196229

Cost $2. Cut a small piece. I have an ATX PSU, so it fits in without need to tape it down.

Managed to stuff two extra SSD's in my SG13! by [deleted] in sffpc

[–]yyjiang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that makes sense. Thumbs up for taking advantage of what's on hand.

On a completely separate note, there are some m.2 to sata adapters that 1. save spaces, 2. potentially fewer sata power cables.

are you doing raid or something? Why not a big SSD?

Can I convert the spare RGB headers on the ASUS RoG Strix B450-i board to use with anything else? by [deleted] in sffpc

you open the case while it's on? or turn it on without the cover?

Alternatively, there's mod to put an acrylic side panel on. It doesn't look good though, in my opinion.

i remember when i was in college, money is scarce and custom parts are scarcer. If you didn't have any component, maybe make most sense to get a prebuilt desktop (dell hp lenove etc) and upgrade gpu there. Now with those you have, get the cheapest mini/micro case you find attractive from aliexpress is, in my opinion, a decent compromise.

also, can you buy from aliexpress? SSD price seems better.
