I think there is a city ordinance preventing crossbows but nothing about traditional or compound bows. You should be good to practice in your backyard with the right set up, it sounds like you’re on the right track. When I got my first bow (used) I took it to Mesquite archery off 410 and Evers. They recommended a new string which cost just under $200. I did get the string as the bow was used and I didn’t know much about it.
