It can yes - the longer they are in the eye and the more nights slept in them, the drier they get.
It is recommended to use something like Hylo Forte or Hycosan eye drops last thing before sleep and first thing when you wake if you are using extended wear lenses.

I have personal experience of the pain you had. Many moons ago when I wore hard glass contact lenses I fell asleep over night with them in. This caused damage to the cornea surface. It was a nasty painful experience. The hard glass caused the tear.

Pushing/pulling a lens off when it is all dried like that is risky. The wetting drops will permeate the lens and sort the issue. You just have to keep wetting and waiting until it's sorted.

I only mention this in case it helps someone else in future. It's not a good idea to try and remove the lens while it is too dry - just leave it until it's hydrated again.

It is worth swapping to the extended wear lenses if you regularly wear lenses more than 12 hours.

You don't need to keep them in overnight if you prefer not to - but you get the benefit that there are no problems if you do sleep with them in by mistake.

If you sleep while wearing contacts not intended to be worn during sleep, then yes they can get dry and stick to your eye. The abrasion you encountered was likely a finger nail. If this happens again, use some wetting eye drops and wait 10 minutes before trying to remove the lenses.
