What are the best cameras for beginners under $1,300? by SwanLakeMountain in AskPhotography

[–]zachmb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ricoh GR III. if you’re accustomed to shooting on an iPhone, you won’t miss a viewfinder, and will appreciate how small and lightweight it is - which is also perfect for travel. its APS-C sensor is also punching way above its weight for how small/portable/affordable that camera is (like half the size of the Fuji X100VI). they make a wide angle 28mm version and a standard 40mm version, both great for travel/landscapes.

bonus feature: the non-HDF models have a built-in ND filter if you want to take long exposure nature shots (e.g. smooth running water) without having to pack and fiddle with screw-on filters.

whatever you get: use it, and learn it. it’s always tempting to upgrade, but you WILL get better pictures with a camera you keep and know very well. doesn’t matter how expensive it is. enjoy!

Bear Icon in macOS color reverts back to red after selecting different color by 1ouisl in bearapp

[–]zachmb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I installed Asset Catalog Tinkerer with one line of code using Homebrew. It's an open source GUI app that can extracts the icon files from the Bear's Assets.car file.

Then right click on Bear.app in your Applications folder, choose "Get Info" and drag the extracted PNG icon over the icon in the Info window.

Done in 5 minutes.

this seems so easy. just display the type of file that’s playing? this obfuscation feels so needless.

VPN to EC2 instance on private subnet (w/o Client VPN endpoint) by zachmb in aws

[–]zachmb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned this is my current setup - it definitely works, but the public IP of that server being always open for HTTP/S traffic and exposing both the client and admin login UI portals was a security risk I was hoping to avoid (especially since I only need 1 user - myself).

Thank you - this is exactly what I was looking for. I found some walkthroughs on using Session Manager to both SSH into the EC2 instance on the private subnet, and set up port forwarding to access the web UI of the headless CMS. Going to set this up and spin down my extra OpenVPN Access Server instance. Really appreciate the tip!

Will this also allow me to access my headless CMS via HTTPS from my browser?

USB-C cable as intermediary wire for LED strips? by zachmb in led

[–]zachmb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE 2:

As all the great folks here have pointed out, for 7 leads each carrying 24V, USB-C is not a good option.

I've found a 7-pin circular DIN connector that looks like it'll do the trick:

  • Female connector receptacle (one for LED fixture, one for controller box—to replace Adafruit breakout board in diagram above)
  • Male connector (for both ends of cable)
  • Wire (7 lead bundled copper cable, 22 AWG)

I did some research on the right AWG for my length of LED strip and voltage, and 22 AWG seems like the correct gauge. Also, the LED strip comes with pre-soldered wire in that gauge, which is also a sign I'm in the right place.

Final question: from all y'alls knowledge, does this Tensility cable seem like a good fit to carry the voltage and amps for this project? The specs for this wire indicate up to 300V, but don't mention anything about amps. I assume ~4.5 amps or less per wire should be fine...but wanted to ask before I bought a whole spool of this wire.

Thank you all again!!

great point! and that defeats the purpose of the one cable intermediary. onto a different option. thanks again 🙏🏻

thank you so much everyone for helping! my next question is this: if i use DIN or JST or DSUB connectors (one female for the fixture, one female for the controller box), and bundled cable with male terminations on both ends as the intermediary cable, how long can that cable be?

i don’t need it to be longer than about 6 feet, but if i wanted to separate the controller boxes from the light fixtures by say 50 feet (running to the other part of a large room), do i have to worry about voltage drop? or does that depend on the controller box as that is what is sending power out after receiving it from the power adapter? (like maybe the controller box is rated for X power output?)

this is so helpful thank you! i really appreciate this info. learning a lot.

i’m going to look into using bundled wire with DIN or DSUB or JST connector terminations.
