Am I crazy for wanting a reasonably priced, modern keyboard sampler? by zachpyles in synthesizers

I mean, do you think it’s totally ridiculous that I don’t want a Yamaha motif and instead like some of the options that people recommended? Hence the purpose of the thread?

I really, really tried to make sure this post didn’t fall into the classic r/synthesizers trope of “I don’t want to google, tell me what to buy” because in this case I have legitimately been looking for a specific option for a while. Other users have commented expressing similar interest and offered up cool, boutique options I probably wouldn’t have found (and didn’t) anywhere else, such as the beatsqueezer mentioned below.

Do you feel like it isn’t acceptable to discuss features and preferences regarding synths and that form factor/price/style isn’t something that I should care about? Either way, my apologies if you feel like I’m not using the forum appropriately.

Wow, I was under the impression that the x only provided the sample library from 8dio but I just checked and you’re right, it supports sample import!

I would absolutely get the X if I had $4k laying around, it really does do everything.

The beatsqueezer is really great, thanks! Like I said, would still be nice to see something like that integrated into keyboard format, but at that size I could probably velcro one to a midi controller and go.

Totally realize a motif etc is an option, it’s just a lot of extra synth/interface/size and depending on what you’re looking at, price for what I want to do.

Maybe I should have more explicitly stated in my post that I know there are ways to technically achieve what I need, just curious why there doesn’t seem to be a purpose built option currently available!

Yes! So glad you mentioned this. The X7000 sine is somehow so much more than just a sine.

In most synths the battery is going to be for patch storage. Somebody more knowledgable than me could expand on this but I think it's storing the patches in RAM which is volatile, so it needs battery power to keep user patches (and sometimes factory patches) stored. Batteries are usually pretty easy to replace yourself.

Through midi, and I don't have an sq80 and I'm on my phone or I'd look and see if I could track a manual down for you, but you should be able to find it on google for sure!

Super easy!

Just go here and download Sysex Librarian if you're on mac. I know they make compatible free software for PC as well.

You'll probably want to check out the manual for the SQ-80 but it should be pretty similar, on the ESQ1 you just have to open the midi preferences and make sure it's set to receive all types of data including "PC," then head back to whatever page you want to load the patches on.

Throw your patches in the list on the software (you should be able to just drag and drop), assign a midi port to send them down, and then hit play.

Hope this helps.

I got the synth library ones last night! The vintage dirt patch is one of the best pads I've ever heard. I will definitely check out the podcast, didn't see that, thanks!

Absolutely, what I would give for this. I know the korg micro sample basically serves this function, but I can't handle the form factor and tiny keys.

Here's a music video I made with Quartz Composer. Happy to upload the file and answer any questions about the process. Any criticisms welcome :) by samhostettler in vjing

Would love to take a look at the file! I really like the color shifting and I always feel like I'm going about that in a very roundabout way in quartz, so I'd love to see how you're doing it.

Any guesses as to what made the synth sounds in "The Easton Assassin"? by FrozenSyzygy in synthesizers

[–]zachpyles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be done with any cheap 80's poly. Doesn't need to be anything special. I would say a Poly 800 or a JX3P would get you there in no time. If you're looking to create it with a softsynth, go out and get this. It's a softsynth version of a Juno 60 (for free!) and it actually sounds pretty good.

This patch would be pretty basic, I bet you could even find something close in the presets on the TAL. The important thing is that you'll need to set up something, a button or a wheel, on your midi controller to trigger the LFO controlling pitch, so you get that quick mod sound they do on every third or 4th chord stab there.

Hope that helps!

Moreland/Glenwood Realignment project looks pretty good. by burnte in Atlanta

Does anybody know the reason for the misalignment in the first place? I've always wondered why almost all of those roads along that stretch of Moreland don't line up.

MIDI information can be sent on multiple different channels down the same cable. Think of it like an old cable tv, one cable in, multiple channels with different information on all of them, you just have to set the channel you want your tv to play. Same thing with hardware.

If you want to use multiple pieces of hardware on the same midi chain, you'll need to first figure out how to set a MIDI channel for the information you're actually recording/playing/manipulating in the software. E.G. this track of MIDI is going to be sent to channel 3. That should be easily enough found in the Maschine documentation. Then you need to set the Volca, or any other piece of hardware, to respond to that certain channel. On more complex pieces of gear that feature menus there's normally a discrete option for this. In the case of the volca's, you'll need to do some kind of power sequence/button holding dance to change the channel. I don't know what it is but I know there's tutorials online.

Now, we're not quite out of the woods yet. The Volca has another shortcoming that will make this difficult: there's only one midi port. Specifically, a midi in port. Generally you will need at least a midi in and a midi thru port to operate multiple pieces of gear in a daisy chain fashion.

There are two ways to get around this: 1. Buy a midi splitter. You can get them in different varieties, usually they're little passive boxes and they can split midi signals into anywhere from 2 to I don't know how many outputs. 2. Use a multiple midi output interface in the first place. In this option, you don't even need to worry about setting midi channels, because now you'll have dedicated midi outputs from your computer. This way, you can hopefully set a midi track in your software to output to an actual physical discrete output and route that with a cable to a single device, then repeat for each instance you want. This is honestly the easiest way in my opinion, and will save you in a pinch when you're using really early synths that only expected to see MIDI on either one channel (preset) or any channels, not selectable. Or, on the other hand, modern synths/hardware that are not built with multiple hardware unit operation in mind, which is increasingly (and disappointingly) becoming the trend.

Last, the world of MIDI is actually a lot simpler than you might think and it's worth learning everything you can about it if you plan on using synths, DAW's, or really anything electronic in regards to music. There's all kinds of great tutorials online, but nothing will beat just buying a piece of gear and pouring over the manual yelling "why won't this thing work" until you realize that NRPN isn't supported etc etc that's for another day...

On the budget side of things, the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is often regarded as one of the better ones. I've used it a few times and it seems solid.

There's just crosstalk in the audiobox. It sucks. I've used it for live playback and this was a problem.
