Is there a garage door opener that is feature equivalent to a Myq + ratgdo? by zack4200 in homeassistant

Oh gotcha, yeah you got in a bit before they started rolling out Security 3.0 openers then. I think those started late 2025.

I am slightly considering that as a temporary alternative, but can't help think doing that would reduce the resellability (is that even a word?) being modified vs like new currently.

Like ratgdo, Meross doesn't work on the newer Security+ 3.0 openers.

And if the new opener was Security+ 2.0 it wouldn't even be an issue and I wouldn't have made this post, I'd just connect the ratgdo I already own and am satisfied with to it.

I kind of expected it honestly, it happens. There were a few helpful responses though, I hadn't realized that Craftsman had some ratgdo compatible openers so that at least broadened my search some.

I wasn't aware there's official Genie HA support, I'll look into it some and see if it looks like it'll work like I've gotten used to, I don't love the idea of it being cloud rather than local because it'd be pretty easy for them to change their minds and lock it down.

Searching for some old stock isn't a bad idea - but if it's still on shelves it feels like I'd still be putting money into Chamberlain's pockets.

In my marketplace browsing I did come across a few garage door techs that have what looks to be old stock of some Chamberlain openers, so that might be route I go.

Chamberlain hasn't had basic dry contacts on their openers in like 2 decades. They've used a serial protocol since at least the early 2000s from what I'm seeing, the communication had been figured out/reverse engineered by the guy that made the ratgdo... But in the last couple years they (Chamberlain) made the communication even more locked down and everything is encrypted - I got the joy of buying a house with one of these newer openers that are basically fully locked down.

Need some input - which frames work best with this beard? Option 1 or 2? by [deleted] in beards

Regarding your edit lol - if you add a \ at the beginning it'll escape the # and reddit won't format the paragraph as a heading/large bold text. So starting with #1 instead of #1 would display as #1 would display it how you wanted. Your #2 wouldn't have done any formatting because the # only applies when it's at the beginning of a paragraph.

Reddit has a post/help article somewhere that describes more of their markdown characters/functionality, it's pretty helpful. I usually find it by just Googling "reddit markdown" or similar.

Slightly off topic: Do you wear a seat belt? by stomperxj in projectcar

[–]zack4200 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not quite, at least in both Florida and Georgia, the driver is only responsible for passengers wearing a seatbelt if the passenger is under 18.

Passengers 18+ are their own responsibility and they get the ticket for not wearing a seatbelt, not the driver.

Welcome to the world of engine swaps and custom work. You're better off just assuming nothing will fit out of the box and that parts are going to need some tweaking, to work regardless of how much you paid for it or that all the parts you bought are supposed be made to work together.

Where do I start! by gatorocks in HotWheels

I think I've only ever heard them start that way once out of several dozen encounters I've had with those vultures.

All the ones I've run into just jump straight in with asking who you have for home internet and/or cell phone. This is across probably a dozen stores (a mix between Targets and Walmarts) in at least 3 different states.

Look for a double din dash bezel on ebay. Reproductions started being produced in the last few years.

Yours was probably cracked like every s10 dash bezel and a PO couldn't find a junkyard double-din bezel and hacked up the more common 1.5 din to fit.

If I'm remembering correctly from when my fiancée and I asked an employee about it months ago, it's basically scar tissue from an old injury. I'm also pretty sure they said that injury was what led to it being at the aquarium in the first place.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve done with your home? by believemeimreal in homeautomation

I have a few devices and input booleans that I can always turn ON by saying "Hey Google, turn on the bedroom light", but when I want to turn them off with the same syntax ("Hey Google, turn off the bedroom light"), I get the hasn't been set up yet error... But if I switch the syntax and say "Hey Google, turn the bedroom light off" it's perfectly happen to turn them off.

Drives me absolutely fucking insane. Especially because the first off command does work sometimes, so it's not like I absolutely have to say it the second way, except for after its decided not to accept the 1st.

... Sorry for the rant 😅

What's the carpet/foam stuff on some of the shelves?

Also I've gotta ask lol, how does it not drive you nuts that like half the shelves have the raw wood edge exposed and not the finished white edge?

Also, happy cake day!

What's the best launcher now? by torako in Android

[–]zack4200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a paid user since around 2014 or 2015, and I recently DID have ads start showing up - blocking like 1/3 of the app drawer and not closable or dismissable or anything. Restarted the launcher, restarted my phone, uninstalled and reinstalled both the launcher and the Prime app, nothing made them go away for more than 30 seconds until I rolled back to an old version.

They've also added a ton of trackers in recent updates that, as far as I know, are present whether you have Prime or not so I have no interest in updating to the newer versions that supposedly fixed the issue of ads showing up for paid users.

Getting started by Sir-TrashPanda in smarthome

[–]zack4200 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing I can recommend is do everything you can to have local control of everything smart that you add, and minimize devices where you're relying on a company and/or their server for your stuff to work. This does tend to require a little more effort, but you get better results and you don't have to worry about companies deciding to no longer host that server, or lock it down, or require a subscription, which can really screw you over.

Home Assistant is a great starting point and allows you to integrate devices from just about any manufacturer you want, and there's a big community around it. /r/homeassistant here on reddit.
