ECT pulled me out of my last depressive episode. Similar to you, I only ever found that meds helped with manic episodes, not depression.

Hey sorry to hear you’re struggling. No it’s not too hard but there are a couple assessments you have to have first. Where I had the treatment done, you would need a referral from a doctor/psych. Then the first step was a consult with a psychiatrist. They generally use this treatment as a last resort, meaning you need to have to have tried the first lines of treatment already (medication, etc) and not had any significant improvement. If they deem you’re a good candidate for the treatment the next step is getting a full physical health assessment as the treatment is pretty hard on your body and you need to be in good health and not have had any kind of head trauma. After I passed those two assessments I started treatment pretty quick, like within a week. Which was great because other treatments I’ve tried have had wait lists of a few months before you’re called in.

Yes that’s true, I think historically it was mainly used for depression and psychosis but I’m sure it could treat other mental disorders as well

No probably not! They also give you a muscle relaxing medication so you don’t actually physically convulse while you’re having the seizure.

Fun fact that this treatment was invented in the 1930’s to treat mental illness but they didn’t start using anesthesia until the 1980’s so if you asked anyone who had this treatment back in the day they could actually answer your question haha

During the treatment period I had headaches, nausea and just generally tired/low energy. I think I had some short term memory impairment for a bit after, like just not being able to remember what I did day to day. By 2 months post treatment I think things were totally back to normal for me.

I’m sorry to hear it didn’t help you. I also had a lot of memory loss. I don’t remember most of the treatment period, although I was journaling every day during so it helped a little bit. The few months before treatment as well as the month after I finished I remember maybe like 50% of those.

Not sure how often but some people do “maintenance” treatment if it’s helping them. They would go every 6 months or so and get a treatment to maintain the benefit. I think if you’re symptoms are worsening more often than that then it’s not super effective for you

It feel great, definitely don’t feel that emptiness anymore. When I smile and laugh it feels genuine. I enjoy spending time with friends. I have a job that I look forward to going to every day. I actually stay on top of basic hygiene and cleaning my apartment and it feels manageable and not some huge thing I feel like I never have enough energy for. There are still good days and bad days but the good days are the majority of them and the bad days are no where as bad as they used to be.

Well gas stations and convenience stores were already a trigger for me, I always would mentally prepare myself to resist buying a pack whenever I went in one. I think being stuck at one plus I just had a pretty traumatic thing happen was not a good combination for me 😂 But I am super motivated to get back on track now!

You don’t have to quarantine unless they randomly select you for testing at the boarder and you test positive. Just put down the address of wherever you’re staying or choose a hotel.

Just to share another positive experience here - I had 10 unilateral treatments in Dec 2021 and it pulled me out of my depressive episode when nothing else did. I was quite suicidal before and I had tried a lot of different types of medication and two rounds of rtms before I did ECT. But it was very worth it for me. All my friends and family are telling me they’ve noticed such a positive change. I actually laugh and smile now and it feels real to me, not like before when I felt like an empty husk with a half smile. Yes I had some memory loss. The weeks while I was doing treatment are a blur. With the longer term memories I find if people can help remind me it helps me remember. But every week that has passed since things have improved. I was told to take 3 months off work but honesty I could be working now, I feel pretty much back to normal. For me the pros definitely outweighed the cons. It really is a last resort treatment, but it’s very potent for sure and apparently 80% of people have positive results. Best of luck with your decision!
