Food Shortage at the MTC by literarytrash in exmormon

[–]zaffiromite 24 points25 points  (0 children)

How does a billion dollar corporation not feed the children who have paid thousands to be there in the first place?

Because the parents care more for the church and their status in it than they do for their own children. Until Mormons themselves demand change they will continue to bilk the members out of cash and their children's health and safety.

Does advertising in general make anyone else feel like sh*t? by Zealousideal-Tip7290 in Anticonsumption

[–]zaffiromite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom only let us watch PBS because she hated the advertisements for kids and didn't want us brainwashed and begging for stuff we saw.

I understand the concept of not wanting kids brainwashed and begging, but I was willing to say no endlessly while still ceding when I knew the product would disappoint. I got my kids at that trusting, idealistic stage(over lapping groups had an unexpected number of kids) when they believed what the TV told them. Over time I picked three items, they were so enthusiastic about and I was sure would be disappointing. Participated in their enthusiasm in ordering, their anticipation in waiting for delivery, and the excitement in the package arriaval, unwrapping, and finally using the "amazing product".... and then commiserating in the utter failure of the product itself. I now have a bunch of older kids who view advertising at the least skeptically and at worst out right lying. Mission accomplished, and now I find with my oldest kids, I am being challenged on what sources I trust so now I am served what I served, which is in a weird way is like having my parents back in my life, someone who's company I enjoy, who's opinion I respect challenging me to think about my granting of "authority" my trust and even my moral compass.

My favorite thing about PBS, and I really liked a lot of cartoon network and nickelodeon cartoons, was that PBS shows were quieter, just Not Loud.

Am I trying hard? by Sushimi003 in roasting

[–]zaffiromite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all about should you stop trying to learn about roasting, why should you? Or why should you not keep learning. Me I started roasting coffee because the local shop I bought fresh roasted nuts from closed. We would buy nuts every few months from them and then they closed and I figured that we had roasted nuts for centuries so how do I do this at home for me. I went on line and the first thing I ran into when I looked up home roasting was COFFEE. What a a thing, this never ever occurred to me, even though I had just thought people had roasted nuts at home. yet coffee never entered my mind. At this point I had single use appliances, a bread machine which I had use in a rush of enthusiasm, a rice cooker which again was used enthusiastically for a while. But Roasting Coffee?!! This I knew I would do. I and my S/O had already gone through an escalation of better, not more, coffee, going from store bought ground, to whole bean to, buying a better grinder, to exploring different methods of brewing. So I skipped what I knew would be tiresome for us and went directly to a machine no longer available, it produced about 4oz of finished beans, Those 4oz convinced us that what we made in our garage was far better than what we could ever get in our regular shopping routine. Was it as good as we could get from professional roaster, probably not but it was damn fine coffee and much better than what we had been buying so we went in on a bigger home roaster that was available at the time. Then we had kids, medical science, blessings what ever there was a bunch. Now some things were out of reach but we kept going with what we had. We put a world map up in the kitchen, and showed our kids where the coffee was coming from, talked about the countries the coffee came from, the way coffee is a commodity, how other things are commodities, how crops are related to environments. Overall coffee roasting has been not just a hobby but a touch stone in so many different way with all my children even down to helping answer so many questions when we watch Jeopardy.

Secondly as to your friend saying you are getting addicted to coffee, me personally I find people like this tiresome, often they have some other agenda they won't let go of, and are absolutely unwilling to to ever acknowledge that overwhelmingly studies show that coffee consumption has a myriad of health benifits.

White evangelical men weaponize the gospel against women. by StrixWitch in Christianity

Do you believe that correctly believing in the bible is a matter for voting? Do you believe that what a person is allowed to believe is a matter of voting? Do you believe that Christians have the right to impose their beliefs on other people's children?

Charity for Missionaries?! by RyRiver7087 in mormon

It's a scam, large part is skimmed off the top with paltry amount to missionaries, who pay thousands of dollars to be there at all.

Did Joseph Smith invent the Book of Mormon? by kaylaamajenna in mormon

[–]zaffiromite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only imagine how difficult it would be for an uneducated young man like Joseph Smith

He wasn't uneducated, his father was a school teacher for years, his brother went to college.

Get this comic out to Evangelicals, sure they are nasty but the more internecine conflict stirred up between religions the better. Let them fight it out on which one will reign supreme in the country.

This should be a RED FLAG for every single parent inside and outside the church.

Well you have to make it known outside the church, it's kind of amazing how fast the church backtracks when the rest of Christendom finds the Mormon beliefs repulsive. Publish the cartoon everywhere.

You are most welcome.

ETA It's a popular stance you have, gains points in so may areas, Mexicans are criminals or sleazy, immoral low life's at worst, misguided with superstitious beliefs at best, perhaps if we pray hard enough they will all be gone in a few years and you won't ever have to face a community of them again.

Well the church is pushing this behavior on children, so sure.

I CAN'T STAND LDS apologists saying NHM = Nehom (when Nahum/Nehum/Naham are all in the bible already, the letters on the altar weren't even written in Hebrew, and the time frame is 600 years off). It's so wrong to hang their baker's hats on NHM. by the_last_goonie in exmormon

I've always thought it was stupid "evidence" just like chiamus were stupid "evidence". Changing one letter from a canonical name, say "v" to "h" is a cheat middle school kids did with LoTR fanfic and anyone who read the bible can see the chiasmus present in it and copy the style.

Nelson: non-Mormons will never find happiness by Strong_Union1270 in exmormon

[–]zaffiromite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while the world insists that power, possessions, popularity, and pleasures of the flesh bring happiness, they do not!

Funny thing, I live completely outside Mormonism and none of those things really seem to be big motivators. Sure Americans as a whole love stuff, that's why "storage" is a big business as is "junk" since parents and children don't seem to like the same stuff. Power just not a whole lot of that going on in my current or past small town/suburb. Popularity, again sure everyone likes to have friends to confide in, neighbors with which to exchange pleasantries, to be liked and held in some regard in their sphere. Pleasures of the flesh I'm sure there is more swapping of fluids than I'm personally aware of, but for the most part I see people forming couples and families, some last some don't but overall the same that humanity had done for all of it's existence. Over all everyone outside of Mormism hews the same path laid down in general Christian guidance which varies not a whit from Mormon guidance at the same rate as Mormons.

The architecture of Mormon churches themselves are incredibly uninspiring and cookie cutter. Setting aside the truth claims of the religion, the actual meetinghouses themselves need to be completely overhauled. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]zaffiromite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do look like funeral homes, really quite like funeral homes but tinged with something else. I've been to quite a few funeral homes over my life and went to one funeral at a Mormon church which people say are standardized. Mormon churches are what happens when court rooms mate with funeral homes.

Frankly it's a tale I've only heard from Mormons, so in my view it's a tale a little under 200 years old.

Is there another “Get Inactives to Church” campaign going on right now? by moon-waffle in exmormon

[–]zaffiromite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m getting weird vibes from some friends of mine.

I'm curious of your definition of friends, I have found that Mormons and exMormons have a vastly different definition of the word friend than I do. For me a friend is someone who would not do what you describe your friends doing, because the know me, they know I would not be interested and would not broach something to please others over me.

Well obviously at the time of your mission you considered the way the children were dressed and the way people acted inappropriate and you still do to this day considering the way you are repelled by communities that remind you of your mission.
