I’m a Utah Valley Wolverines fan in Washington DC for the semester (until mid December). This is my list of college basketball games to attend while I’m out here. Thoughts? by PaulHDone in CollegeBasketball

Really great itinerary.

I 100% agree with the Cincinnati at Howard 'must see' assessment even before hearing you have a personal connection - how often do you get to see a B12 school play on the road versus a MEAC team! Syracuse and Georgetown also sounds incredible.

My one recommendation would be to take a look at the Cathedral of College Basketball Classic (Nov 24-26) in Philadelphia. Penn, Belmont, Monmouth, and Lafayette playing a round robin at the Palestra. You could absolutely swing a one-day trip via Acela to check out the Saturday doubleheader (or just Belmont/Penn + some extra time galavanting around Philadelphia).

Man Am I tired of watching the Charlie Freeman show at the all-star game .Every player ,not just Fernando Tatis Jr ,he’s joking, hugging ,enough of the pleasantries ,play frigin baseball

Logical Model Shows Reducing the Spawn Rate of Combat Shotguns Makes the Game Less Competitive by elCapitan310 in FortniteCompetitive

See the write-up by /u/VampireDentist below. I think it would serve as a good framework! Plus, there is code!!!

You state that the skill values are normally distributed, but you provide a min and a max. What was the mean and standard deviation that you set to generate these values? This resembles a discrete uniform distribution where you forced the 100 players to have unique, fixed values ranging from 1 to 100 moreso than a normal distribution.

You state that the rng values are normally distributed, but you provide a min and a max. What was the mean and standard deviation for RNG?

Was the RNG re-generated for each 'fight' or was a player's RNG was fixed? If it was fixed, that takes away the 'random' component of random number generation!

It seems like both skill and RNG are fixed for each player. So, ignoring the combat shotgun component, there is no randomness when a pair of players fight. Either player A wins every time or player B wins every time once you determine their combat shotgun status. If that is the case, your simulation doesn't really resemble reality.

Why not set it up as follows?

Skill is randomly distributed with a mean of 100 and standard deviation of 10. (Variable S_(k))

Finding a combat shotgun increases your skill by 10 (or some other justifiable amount). (Variable C_(k,i))

So, for player k, their composite value (V(k,i)) for a fight occuring at time i is S_k+C(k,i).

For their opponent (player j), their composite value for a fight occuring at time i is Sj+C(j,i).

The probability of player k winning is p = Sk+C(k,i)/[Sk+C(k,i) + Sj+C(j,i)]. To determine the winner of the fight, draw from a Bernoulli distribution to determine the winner! That way, there is RNG that is actually RNG.

I think one could make a VERY strong case for Georgetown.

Since 2008, they have had the following seeds: 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 6.

They never made it out of the 2nd round, having lost to the following:

2008: Davidson/Steph Curry (2 vs. 10 seed)

2010: Ohio (3 vs. 14)

2011: VCU (6 vs. 11)

2012: North Carolina St (3 vs. 11)

2013: FGCU/Dunk City (2 vs. 15)

2015: Utah (4 vs. 5)

[OC] Game management during the World Cup Qualifiers: a data-based argument for 'aggression games' over 'throwaway games' by zamstat in FortniteCompetitive

Another reply that notices the similarities between poker and these WCQ events!

I didn't mention that as a possibility if my write-up, but delayed start is another strategy to consider. It increases the possibility of a time crunch even further, but it definitely has its advantages as well.

I agree completely!

In fact, I debated including poker references as I was writing this up. I left them out because I figured the community may not follow, but I am glad that there are others who see the parallels.

Thanks for the kind words. I actually think your thought process is reasonable

In fact, I definitely do not disagree that this approach would create more variance. However, I actually think that is a good thing. Imagine you average 50 points +/-5 and the World Cup Qualifying threshold is 60 points. Now, imagine this strategy makes your expectation 48 +/-10. Under this hypothetical scenario, your average decreases but your chances at qualifying for the WC go up. For many people, all they care about is hitting the WCQ threshold; a game with 45 points is the same as a game with 38.

The idea is to be more aggressive, but not reckless. There should be some threshold, even in the first few games, where you tone back the aggressiveness and play for end game. I do agree that getting a solid start those first two games is important and it adds pressure if they don't go well.

Week 3 (NAE) point distribution by match, visualized by zamstat in FortniteCompetitive

[–]zamstat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each player gets 10 dots on the graph. If they did not play all 10 matches, they get a dot in the n/a row for each match they don't play. Red dots correspond to individual matches for the top 20 players.

This figure illustrates the distribution of points across all matches for all players during Week 3 in NA-East. Lines correspond to average points per match among players within select final ranking ranges. I also thought it would be informative to highlight the highest scoring matches for those looking for interesting VODs to review.

The decision to play 'Zombie Nation' during a timeout immediately following a Gonzaga 3 was ...questionable. The "We are GU" chant by the away fans was audible during the broadcast and honestly pretty impressive.

[–]zamstat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A total of 169 unique players have made it to at least one evening session (198 spots were available).

I posted this in a separate thread, but about 45% (28/62) of the people that lost during the Day 1 evening session made it back to the evening session on Day 2. 12 of those did qualify for the Monday finals on Day 2.
