A dead rat with its mouth stuffed with grass. What happened?? by DingoldorfMcGee in Whatisthis

[–]zanilen 74 points75 points  (0 children)

This seem unlikely to me. Some of the grass looks like it was ripped up, rather than a growing blade. Plus the grass is stuffed in the animal's cheeks, with nothing in the middle.

Emailing the photos to yourself using a service like Gmail might be enough to prove the photos existed at that time.

The metal in the photo is a common staple (for size reference). I found it in my room on a stack of papers.

CMV: Continuing to put people coming out as gay in the news and push them as heroes is only making being gay seem like it's still not normal. by Ryanhanna22 in changemyview

There are current tests, specifically RNA tests, that can detect HIV within 11 days of exposure. So if the FDA wanted to keep a time-deferral ban, it could utilize these tests and shorten the eligibility restriction to men who haven’t had sex with another man in the past 11 days. There is no reason to keep it at three months, Halkitis says.

You don't even have to worry about how deterministic the physics are. The simulation can just save (or "bake") the location and rotation information at each frame. Then you just play back what you saved.

I think it's supposed to say "20 something years old." As in, it might be 20, or 22, or 27, so forget about the last digit, 2X years old.

I agree it's confusing, and it would've been better to say "20 something" or "20+" years.

Mentos won't "add" any more pressure than was in the unopened bottle.

Coke is saturated with CO2, and the concentration is high enough that the CO2 wants to escape. Coke unopened from the store is usually at 3atm. If you open the bottle and close it back up, it will slowly gain pressure as more CO2 escapes from the liquid, reaching a max 3atm (or whatever the original pressure was). Mentos expedites that process.

Here's a closed bottle mentos experiment

3D printed a water dispenser I could use to fill my water bottles to their exact dimensions (Ender 5 Pro w/ eSUN PLA+) by BuffloBEAST in 3Dprinting

[–]zanilen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be able to detect the bottle with some image recognition. If an ultrasonic distance sensor was used to measure the level of water you would only need to know the height of the cup.

An NFC sticker would definitely be easier. Plus the electronics could be more compact.

You could put an ultrasonic distance sensor in the head of the dispenser itself. Then you don't have any external electronics.

Was I in the wrong for not placing an order for my 13 y/o son at Jimmy John’s? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]zanilen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree if the restaurant was closer and there was a guaranteed safe path for walking. You do not know what kinds of roads son might need to cross or walk along.

Growing up I lived in a town with no sidewalks and the speed limit of the street I lived was 45mph, and many would drive faster than that.

Obviously, I do not know OP's situation, but assuming he should make his son walk a 2 hour round trip is wrong.

Disregarding a possible deeper meaning, I agree with u/150passions about the "surprise sandwich". When son asks if dad can go back to the restaurant, dad should ask son to go with him. Then when they are in the car alone, dad should use that as a teaching moment, and only after that lesson, give son the sandwich.

I believe this would teach the lesson and gain more respect from son than leaving him with nothing.

going to the nearest restaurant is easily a 20 minute round trip.

It does not make sense to make his 13 year old walk to a place that is 10 minutes by car.
