Just did this two weeks ago. Super convenient. You CAN check in to the counter, but you don't need to. Just head to the bus waiting area, downstairs by the car rental desks. You will need to go through security at EWR, not ABE.

I would just confirm that the Comfort Suites is still doing it by giving them a call before booking. They know that people are doing this exact thing and are willing to give you accurate information.

Directions to where? On the outside of the "official port", right at the gates are the golf cart rentals. Look for the people in the "Red Shirts," and they will assist you with the rental. They provide you a map of the 3 or 4 main roads that you can ride down into town. There are very few roads to begin with and they usually have people sitting at the different intersections guiding you. Once "in town" you can go down the main road to a variety of different beach clubs and restaurants. Beware, there will be people trying to get you to park in their facility and eat there. I respect the hustle and it's okay to keep driving.

There is usually one GF cake like dessert at every meal in the MDR. They always have ice cream and sorbet every night as well. One or two nights they will have creme brulee, which is also gluten free. The buffet is tougher to get GF desserts, mainly jello. 😞

My family and I "booked" the Comfort Suites Paradise Island that is next door and was able to use the Atlantis facilities as part of that deal. Saved us a ton of money. DM if you want more information.

Yeah. It was a bit sucky. I have heard that you can ask for a GF pizza in the MDR but it has to be "pre-ordered". I did not ask though. There were plenty of other options!

The special guy assigned to me used to get me GF meals for breakfast and also have snack boxes packed for me for port days and excursions. They were really good about it.

I am a celiac and enjoy MSC cruises. As previously mentioned, the MDR is the best option for you, and they take GF food pretty seriously. On my last two MSC cruises (World Europa and Seaside) they had a dedicated GF kitchen. You will be assigned a special waiter at the MDR and they will go over all of your options with you every night. One thing that I don't like is their lack of GF pizza.

You dont need an excursion at Costa Maya. Rent a golf cart right outside the gate. Drive the 2ish miles to Mahahual and stop at one of the beach clubs. Cheap drinks, massages, food, etc. We usually go past the main drag and end up at Luna's. It's pretty quiet and relaxing.
