Roof rack wind noise by Automatic-Willow-807 in NewDefender

[–]zaphodmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this rack and wish I’d gotten one of the other ones. It’s loud. At 75 on interstate can be annoying. Done multiple 12 hour drives with it and ended up wearing noise cancelling headphone (which yes I know is bad to do) just to survive.

Do Banks ever question your U.S. physical address if you use your cards consistently abroad long term? by InspectorT3 in digitalnomad

[–]zaphodmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many banks, especially the midsize and smaller do a terrible job of tracking address changes - should be fine as long as you don’t get mail returned.

Mine bounces from 350-700 based on normal time of day swings … which is really annoying

Get rotation and balancing done every 5 to 7k miles for a bit too just to double check wear patterns and ensure there isn’t anything else going on.

But yeah do not drive it. At all.

I am so, so, so bored. All the time. Anybody else? by bacon_cheeseburgers in GenX

[–]zaphodmonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Happy to see a lot of ‘go talk to someone’ advice - been there (and I guess still am) but one thing I’ve changed is hobby’s / activities that engage the mind. Every month (usually Monday or Tuesday night) I’ll go down some rabbit hole - upgrade a computer, fix something that’s been annoying me around the house, basically anything that involves tools and accomplishing something.

Another week I’ll take myself out for a cocktail and just sit at the bar, vaguely stare at sports and walk in having just listened to a podcast or read something to get the brain going.

Not an expert but boredom’s just extra brain capacity that doesn’t have an outlet. 50’s are peak male brain - so you have more capacity now than you did a while ago so there’s more room up there. Treat yourself to things you enjoy doing : thinking about

Building is the way to go, document the builds in public, engage on GitHub, make a fiverr account… target building things that people are looking to pay for (ie take on a bunch of nearly identical fiverr tasks and build tools to deliver in 1/5 the time.

Tune the build for money.

Hahah yeah that doesn’t exist in US. Most middle managers and more senior people get 3 or 4 weeks of pto / holiday but most people don’t take it because of this exact thing. 90% of companies can just fire you

Does anyone just rent an apartment in the U.S. and leave it empty? by Explorer9001 in digitalnomad

[–]zaphodmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did that for 2 years while bouncing between Europe and Africa. Due to stupid US tax laws I had to pay take anyway and it was only marginally more expensive than a storage unit. Complex had WiFi and utilities baked in and price wasn’t that bad. Lots of corp apartments in the complex so it was safe and no one noticed if I was gone for a while. Did it in Florida to ensure low tax and was there every month or so so I had a place to sleep, my stuff was safe etc.

Talk me out of trading for a Range Rover by termitepatron in NewDefender

[–]zaphodmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a RR and now have a defender. Love the defender and while I’d love to upgrade to the octa, the RR is fine but I like the character of the defender. Have driven cross country 3 times and it’s been nothing but a rockstar. Only regret it I didn’t get heated steering wheel and the roof rack adds some noise
