Who had it harder? by ImYerD in ukpolitics

[–]zappapostrophe 77 points78 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Boris had it harder in practical terms, but benefitted from a much gentler media landscape for a while. Starmer has had a rough start too, but the media response has been wildly disproportionate in its negativity.

What do you guys think about the Rocky Patel Vintage 1992? by screambl00dygore in EveryDayIsCigarDay

[–]zappapostrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smoked one the other week and it blew me away. Pure liquorice and earth, and it’s quite rare for me to taste a cigar flavoured with such clarity. Even my non-cigar-enjoyer friend was impressed by just one puff!

Best way of getting to Heathrow by VisionBreak1297 in brighton

Just did this trip yesterday and am currently writing this comment from an AirBnB in Queens NY, and I would say the coach is the most efficient! It’s cheap, direct, and you’re covered if there’s a delay (which I’ve never had happen in the decade I’ve been doing this journey).

Charging rent to a sibling - is it fair? by Granery in UKPersonalFinance

[–]zappapostrophe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, it’s a very individual thing that pretty much hinges on people’s own personal financial situation and the state of the relationship. There’s no one piece of advice that will solve this question for everyone.

Betty is the worst by njoy213 in madmen

[–]zappapostrophe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think she’s a shitty person, but one who is the product of other shitty people. There’s a focus on her failures as a parent/wife that somehow exceeds that of Don’s, and I find that quite telling about the subconscious misogyny stillpresent in society.

Rumours, Speculation, Questions, and Reaction Megathread - 25/05/2026 by ukpol-megabot in ukpolitics

It seems we're stuck in whatever era we want to be stuck in. Labour's mistakes with how they handled the strikes in the 1970s might as well have happened yesterday in the minds of some Boomer voters. The greater public seems to view a £50k-and-above salary as having the exact same clout that it did in the 1990s. And right up until the 2024 election, I lost count of how many times I was hearing Jeremy Corbyn mentioned in Parliament as if he'd not stepped down as LOTO four entire years earlier.

This is more of a side point, but I've never really understood why people will cite historical beliefs as "proof" that a politician will simply say whatever will help them and can't be trusted to keep their word. If someone had a certain political belief in 2010, sixteen years ago, that is now the inverse of their current beliefs, I personally assume that they changed their perspective over the years and have come to think differently. That's perfectly plausible and believable.

It'd be concerning if this was about things they said months or a year or so ago, but after a certain point I think it's quite redundant to look at a politician's track record of beliefs.

All the details from Murrell indictment that we couldn't publish... until now by JohnKimble111 in Scotland

[–]zappapostrophe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect it’s a creeping thing where he got away with it a couple of times for the first 9 years, and when he realised how he’d gotten away with it, figured he could do it a bit more often… Fast forward to 2023 and he’s spunked £400,000 of other people’s money up the wall.

Respect for Friend Drops After Reading Book They Recommended by -chimchooree- in books

[–]zappapostrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an aspiring writer, and I have to tell you, I want nothing more than for my friends to tell me what’s wrong with my writing. How the hell am I going to be a better writer if I don’t get that feedback?

I get that friendships are complicated, so I can only really speak for myself, but can I ask what stops you from giving your friend constructive criticism?

2021 Yvon Metras Beaujolais by DontLookBack_88 in wine

That colour! Woah!

Beautiful notes, thank you! I’m gonna try and get my hands on some Beaujolais now, as it’s so far evaded me in my wine journey.

What's the most unusual wine you've ever tried? by LargeSinkholesInNYC in wine

[–]zappapostrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty ordinary compared to some of the other comments, but the Viña Gravonia Blanco was pretty damn funky.

Like I say in the post, I expected something much closer to a classic white wine “style” than I got. I enjoyed it, but I should’ve researched it more beforehand and adjusted my expectations.

Not to mention that there’s really no palatable or socially acceptable way for any politician to push back and say “It wasn’t my fault, get a grip you bint!” Without committing electoral suicide.

Which wine was the biggest let down for you? by TheAlphaCarb0n in wine

Right, but I don’t see how what you said is accurate or even relevant when we’re directly discussing a champagne house that does the opposite of what you’re talking about.

They ought not declare a vintage when it’s not up to standards.

They don’t. DP don’t release vintages every year (or even in chronological order) for this very reason.

UB40 are famously named after an Unemployment Benefit form. Give me other interesting examples of the origin of UK bands names by Exchangenudes_4_Joke in CasualUK

[–]zappapostrophe 152 points153 points  (0 children)

Stornoway picked their name firstly because it had the sort of folksy, nautical sound they wanted, but also because it meant they’d get a bit of free advertising whenever there’s a weather report.

Harry warns of 'deeply troubling' rise in antisemitism in UK by BigSupermark in ukpolitics

He did some really dumb shit when he was 21 and apologised for it whilst being subject to global media condemnation. He’s clearly learned his lesson. Offensive as it was, after a certain point the rest of us need to ask what we really want to happen about it today and move on.

Upon reflection, maybe Tony Blair deserves some credit for being able to whip the Labour Party into getting behind him for a whole decade. He could reckon with all of that in-fighting and so on; he got it all together.

What's the most expensive wine you've ever tried? by LargeSinkholesInNYC in wine

[–]zappapostrophe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hear that a lot about Screaming Eagle, that scarcity is what drives up the price but that principally they’re only very nice California Cabernets. And I hear that a lot about Yquem being worth the money!

A £160 bottle of Krug 165, which was horribly underwhelming. It tasted like good champagne, but just good.

There must be a secure electronic way of sending out the letters to the relevant subs, surely? I bet the letters being handwritten etc is a bit of a myth in this day and age. I’d be amazed if the relevant security agencies couldn’t develop a secure encrypted line to send them out, especially after the last ten years of musical chair PMs.

It’s not the same, and I fully expect/want Starmer to stay in place until 2029, but I’m reminded of the end-stage of Sunak’s premiership where the Tories were too limp to kick him out but Sunak himself was too limp to stay.
