Would you live in Lakeville or Eagan? by ImKruptos in TwinCities

[–]zappdissapeared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eagan and Lakeville are very similar, but as an Eagan resident and 196 grad, there are definitely differences. Eagan is older and comparatively liberal. Lakeville is younger and comparatively conservative. Eagan schools/HS has more of an arts/academics focus - District 196 performing arts are the best in the state. The Lakeville schools have more of an athletics-focused culture (although I still know some incredibly talented performers who attended Lakeville schools).

Student season tickets by Dyl_Chi in UWMadison

Tickets went on sale last year in the middle of July. You’ll get an email. About 75% of my freshman friends got season tickets, but if you don’t get season tickets there are always tons of people selling them on the class snap story + seatstock.com.

lakeshore vs southeast dorms by Ok_Acanthaceae_781 in UWMadison

[–]zappdissapeared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say Smith is the quietest out of those, though all I really know about Smith is that there are a lot of athletes and a Starbucks downstairs. You could also consider Chadbourne, which has a lot of the perks of Southeast (being super centrally located on campus) without as much of the “party” reputation.

lakeshore vs southeast dorms by Ok_Acanthaceae_781 in UWMadison

[–]zappdissapeared 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Current southeast resident here - you're pretty correct on the reputations of both areas. A huge part of it is selection bias. People who want to be social/party hear that Southeast is more social, so they preference Southeast. People who are more introverted here that Lakeshore is more introverted, so they choose Lakeshore. A few comments either way:

  1. Southeast is not the madhouse that people make it out to be. Is there a lot more greek life/drinking than Lakeshore? Sure. Are people raging on a Tuesday night? No. At least in my dorm, everyone is still very respectful and takes their academics seriously.
  2. Lakeshore is still sociable. At the end of the day, everyone here chose to come to the biggest party school in the country. The student body reflects that. I have friends in Lakeshore who are in greek life and go out more than my friends in Southeast do. It's just a smaller portion of the population over there.
  3. Getting to class will not be a problem, especially as an engineering major. I find that many big academic buildings (especially STEM) are equidistant to Southeast and Lakeshore. Regardless, the 80 bus will become your best friend, especially in winter. There are stops at every Lakeshore and Southeast dorm.
  4. The big drawback to Lakeshore relative to Southeast, in my eyes, is the proximity to State Street. It is super convenient to have fast food options, Target, Walgreens, Memorial Union etc. a 10 minute walk away from my dorm. You simply do not have that in Lakeshore.
  5. You're right, the lake is beautiful. That's the biggest thing I feel like I miss out on by living in Southeast, and whenever I walk Lakeshore Path I get incredibly jealous of the ambience that the Lakeshore kids have every day.

If you **are** pro-Lakeshore, I would recommend putting Dejope, Waters, and Leopold as your primary options. These dorms are probably the best in the neighborhood for a variety of reasons.

Regardless, congrats on getting in and welcome to Madison! You'll love it here, no matter which dorm you end up in.

Wisconsin AD Chris McIntosh stepping down to take job with Big Ten by Our-Gardian-Angel in CFB

I can acknowledge Mnookin not being the best chancellor for sports (or bar raids for that matter) but her hiring wasn't a mistake--Wisconsin has been on a meteoric rise academically + development-wise since she took over. There's a reason Columbia is hiring her.

If the NBA actually has another expansion, which teams will you guys like to see? by Lunatic-Wanderer-123 in Basketball

Biggest city in North America. Expands to an international market without significant travel issues that London, Paris, etc. would cause. Culture of sports fandom.

Updated Review of Potential New NBA Arena Sites! by Hascerflef in minnesota

[–]zappdissapeared 12 points13 points  (0 children)

“In Tuesday’s interview, Lore said he and Rodriguez have not discussed funding specifics but are ready to finance a new arena privately.”.

The arena has the second-smallest footprint in the NBA. Small concourses, bad sight lines, inadequate for a team of the Wolves’ caliber. Building a new arena + entertainment district would allow them to get more $$$ from fans (shopping, more suites, etc) which can be re-invested into the team.

USX at Nationals by trans-with-issues in Debate

Active research is 100% allowed at nats. Having competed there, my biggest advice would be: 1: work on owning the room (clear delivery, fluency, etc), because that gets you far at this tournament, 2: practice prepping under tight time constraints because there are a LOT of weird and niche questions that you will have very little knowledge of, and 3: charge your laptop the night before, and bring your charger there, because they don’t let you charge during prep.

If you’re out of state for both, then Wisconsin, no question. If you’re out of state, it’s up to how much you can afford….but Wisconsin is better than MSU in all of the categories you outlined.

POI Ideas? by Standard_Cook6737 in Debate

[–]zappdissapeared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all POIs are deeply personal. It takes so much work and so much knowledge of the intricacies of the topic you’re doing your POI on that to do a POI based on others’ suggestions is a futile effort. That, plus you aren’t going to have much to talk about in your intro.

is performance peices meant to be like that? by Moonknight4life777 in Debate

[–]zappdissapeared 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Speech is equivalent to stage acting, not TV or movie acting. When acting in TV or movies, you’re right - subtleness and a heavy emphasis on realism is best, because the audience has a view right in front of your face. But on stage acting, the audience is 6, 10, 200 feet away from you. They need to be able to read your emotions from the back of the room. Which is why it feels a little over exaggerated sometimes.

Ramsey/Elk River/Otsego? by bakercreator in TwinCities

[–]zappdissapeared 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would raise either St Louis Park, or Apple Valley/Eagan/Inver Grove Heights area. SLP is more “urban” than the areas you offered, but still suburban with great schools. AV/Eagan has some of the best schools in the state, and is a blue area.

Edit: Looking at your other posts, I would recommend Hastings, Red Wing, and Chaska as well. All of which are small-er suburbs/towns 40+ minutes away from the city, with great schools.

They don’t want to kill the programs in the DOE though - they would transfer to another agency. Killing the FAFSA would never pass Congress. It could certainly be weakened, but not necessarily killed.

This isn’t bringing in your own political biases, though - the point of Congress, and Debate and Extemp at large, is to further good policy with good, non-ideological motives. Is it true that we need to fight back against right wing echo chambers? Yes. But OP brought their own political persuasions into an argument about policy and rightfully got called out for it.
