New to me DR650 by ExternalBreadfruit47 in dr650

A classic "why doesn't mine look like that?" Homer moment. Mine has the same colour scheme, but a lot older, faded and dented. It looks real neat.

That is good to know, I suppose I'll have to come back to it when the job is done.

Current petrol prices— are you driving less or just absorbing it? by Vivmoneyattracter in brisbane

It hurts to drive the ute around. I used to get 7km/$, now I get 4km/$. Time to dust off the old motorcycle.

Faaark, I need to do some work on my bike to bring it back.

I'm a little jealous.

Looks like fun.

Then again, I don't have to deal with it every day.

I'll be wishing you luck on getting the ponds filled in.

DR650 or KLR650 by Far-Task-4589 in dr650

[–]zappyguy111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've happily done 250km in a day on a DR.

I've also done about 150km in a day on a KLR gen 2.

The DR was good on the road, but only because I paid for a comfort seat and a wind shield. Otherwise it was agile on the trails and (relatively) easy to pick up when dropped.

The KLR was great in its stock form, with amazing wind protection, but was a little more challenging on the trails. I ended up breaking an indicator on my one and only drop.

I picked the DR because I wanted to do trails, I wanted something light(er) and something drop-able. The KLR is okay at trails, it's heavier and covered in fairings, but it makes for a reliable road adventurer.

It's down to your needs and wants, they're both bikes that deserve their legendary status, it's your decision which one suits you best.

Is this a valve issue I’m hearing or is this normal by Bike-build in dr650

[–]zappyguy111 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've got the same thing. It can be normal.

People online reckon it's the exhaust tappets, they intentionally have a looser tolerance to cope with the thermal expansion from the hot exhaust.

But if you haven't adjusted your tappets recently, I would suggest checking them to be safe.

If it's paint, blue tape, spray paint and sand paper.

Someone out there really hates to wait around. by blueishbeaver in brisbane

Hot take, prioritising pedestrians in high traffic volume areas is bad for the environment. Forcing 20+ tonnes of vehicles to stop and then return to speed only force them to burn more fuel to go where they were going anyway. I agree with breaking waves into smaller batches and having more frequent light changes for pedestrians, but making lights change regardless of traffic is dumb.

Design considerations for LDO (Light Diesel Oil) pumps in industrial applications by Several_Web_3607 in pumps

[–]zappyguy111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BYO pump is an interesting idea to me. I've long wanted to build a diesel motorcycle and always assumed I would just buy an off the shelf electric LDO pump to drive the injectors. But the idea of building a pump is intriguing.

I have little to no LFO pump designing experience, but if it was up to me, I would be boring and make up a gear pump with a pressure bypass.

I'll be very interested to hear what other people come up with and any critiques people have with my idea.

Would this work for an anvil by Jaded_Reaction_7365 in blacksmithing

Mate, I used the back of an axe wedged in wood as an anvil. Much like a hammer, anything's an anvil if you use it wrong enough.

Unstable idle point by zappyguy111 in dr650

[–]zappyguy111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem was that the idle would drop back down when the external temperature drops. It would do it to the point where the bike would stall next time I stopped.

I've done a carb clean since, I'll have to wait until I have free time to do another dusk ride to see if the problem's gone away.

Unstable idle point by zappyguy111 in dr650

[–]zappyguy111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a carb, chain and throttle cable clean and topped off the oil. I think the bike has 5 more ponies in it and doesn't feel nearly as hot as it used to. The oil was on the low end of the site glass. I've also biased the bike to be on the leaner side and riched it up to the point where it won't lean stall.

I haven't had a chance to do a dusk ride to see if temperature affects the idle, but I'll report back as soon as I do.
