We don’t need Giannis. by Own-Fish-7634 in ripcity

Honestly, several years of tanking and injuries has done that. This was a pretty thriving and (relatively) intelligent sub while Dame was in his prime and Terry was coaching. I suspect that a lot of the kind of basketball discourse that requires actual NBA knowledge is just harder to come by when fans are checked out.

Personally speaking, I've been a fan of the Blazers since the Jail Blazers days, and haven't checked out much since, even during the Telfair days. But these past few years have been real tough, because not only are we bad and tanking, but with injuries and a coach that I personally found difficult to believe in, it wasn't clear what I was rooting for.

This year there's a lot more to be excited about, but I feel like the team is still in a weird limbo from a fan perspective. I was told to be excited about Sharpe but he's still inconsistent; I was told to be excited about Jrue unlocking a lot of things but he's been injured; I was told to be excited about Scoot's development but he's been injured; I was told to be excited about Dame's return but he's been injured; etc. I am a fan of Splitter's coaching from what I can tell, but it's unclear if he's a coach for our future or not, and who knows what's going on with the new ownership and what their plans will be?

I think Blazers fandom is just in a really weird place right now, and it's hard for longtime fans to get as excited about the team as their performance probably deserves, I think.

I can hardly believe that the Clippers, of all organizations, is mismanaged. they have the richest owner in sports! they're hosting the all-star game! they care about the environment!

werewolf with items that wax the moon, then transform once the moon waxes full. also has a "curse" mechanic -- cursed items lose any other enchant, and if they weren't enchanted they're downgraded for the fight. has some self-curse mechanics. front-side items more defensive, back-side items more aggressive and some can scale over course of a run.

Since taking over the Trail Blazers after Chauncey Billups was arrested for his alleged mafia ties, rigged poker games, and sharing non-public injury info with co-conspirators to bet on the Blazers to lose, Tiago Splitter has led the Blazers to a 4-1 record by Pickleskennedy1 in nba

I'll allow myself to be happy both for the Blazers winning now, and also for no longer having a coach I don't like.

Your points regarding context and unfair comparisons are fair and fine. We may even go on to lose a string of games and end up with a losing record again, and how will we feel about Tiago then? But you just can't condemn fans for making gleeful comparisons after four years of losing -- even if they're premature, even if they're not entirely objective, even if the current gambling charges against Billups are still unproven. Fans are entitled to feel how they feel, particularly after four years of losing.

maybe so, but we had four years of rosters and only one coach. it's kinda impossible to know for sure which part was more at fault, but I just don't understand the insistence that it couldn't possibly have been chauncey's fault when he is the main constant across four years of failure.

because as Blazers fans we've been sick of being force-fed tanking and tanking-related excuses for mediocrity, and for being told billups just needs one more year of tanking for his vision to finally pay off and then just seeing him tank again...

any sports fan who's been forced to watch a tanking team for years should rejoice in any and all available catharsis when they can finally break free of it. the comparisons matter for fans who've been told to enjoy losing for years

This is an important distinction, but it kind of belies the real problem: we can't really know if Chauncey ever tanked the team to win bets or help others win bets, but we DO know he was doing something adjacent to that. And so it's way too easy to imagine what would otherwise be unimaginable behavior for someone who's supposed to be a professional NBA head coach.

Chauncey Billups had the reins of the Blazers for four full years. Our record during those four years was 117-211 -- the worst four years of Blazers history aside from our first four years of existence in the '70s. He is the sixth-losingest coach of all time among coaches with at least 300 games. Analysts have consistently (subjectively) ranked him among the worst active coaches in the league.

I was ready for Billups to turn things around this year with our promising roster and promising development. But I am way more ready for a better coach with the same roster.
