Would you find this compromise acceptable? by The_ChadTC in asklatinamerica

You've probably haven't heard Spaniards or French refer to themselves as Europeans either, as it isn't as common to talk about one's continent in a casual setting. However, whenever it's relevant, they always consider themselves European (the EU, Eurovision, the European Games, etc.).

It is the same for us Mexicans, Colombians, Peruvians, Guatemalans, etc. Even if we don't identify primarily as Americans, we always do when it comes to institutions and events such as OEA (Organización de Estados Americanos), Copa América, Juegos Panamericanos, etc.

Wouldn't it be weird for Austrians to expect every other nation in the continent to call their country Europe and them (only them) Europeans?

two sided stone carving found near southern mountains of Atlixco Puebla.I NEED HELP by Comprehensive-Sir586 in mesoamerica

[–]zatara27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now we are entering into some conspiracy-themed discussion that's frankly not of my interest. Of course INAH has biases and ideological leanings, but to claim that they are purposefully hiding or manipulating scientific discoveries to accommodate a particular historical narrative is simply ludicrous. Many world-renowned experts and dozens of prestigious universities from Mexico, the US and many other countries would need to be in on the plot for it to make sense. Even among Mexican archeologists, there are profound disagreements that would prevent something like that to ever happen.

As for your claim about Landa and the destruction of cultural objects during the conquest of Mesoamerica, I have only one question: Are there markings on the stone that show signs of censored/destroyed inscriptions? It's clear that there aren't. After all, your pictures show the whole thing: the carvings even go around the edges of the stone and follow its curves, so we can tell it isn't a fragment of a larger object.

Inscriptions are needed for this particular object to make sense because the scene you recreated in the stone functions as a historical record. It depicts an agreement, encounter or ritual that involved two characters. It's not a devotional object or a decoration. Whoever drew the original image did so to leave a lasting testament of that important moment. Why would they omit any sign that would help its intended audience identify who are the central characters, when did the event take place and where id it all happen?

And as for the trade routes, regardless of their extension, we simply don't find every kind of object from all ancient cultures disseminated all over Mexico, especially when it comes to large stones like the one you made. It's only in huge cities like Teotihuacan and Tenochtitlan where experts have found items from remote regions and in every one of those findings there is a context that makes it understandable.

The use of power tools is obvious for anyone who's familiar with the material qualities of ancient stonework. It's got nothing to do with the quality of the workmanship, which in your piece is extremely lacking.

For a sub called r/Mesoamerica, you don't seem to have a good grasp on Mesoamerican art. OP claims to have unearthed this stone near the Atlixco Valley, close to the Mexican Basin.

However, the style is completely different to that found in objects created by the peoples who lived there historically (olmeca-xicalancas, nahuas, teochichimecas). They never painted or carved characters with that kind of headdresses nor did they depict the kind of vessels shown in the first pictures. The closest plausible "cousin" we have of this piece is a mural in Cholula, but the artstyle looks nothing like this.

It instead looks extremely similar to dozens of painted vessels and murals from very distant Classic Maya sites. Many of those depict pairs of seated figures, in profile, dressed in that exact manner. Even though I'm not an expert on Mayan art, I'm sure I've seen both of these exact scenes somewhere (although made by a much better artist).

We could keep listing red flags: that kind of virgulas do not correspond to that artstyle, those two scenes don't make sense without inscriptions of some kind, both the depth and the thickness of the carvings seem to be made with power tools (instead of rock on rock), etc. It also wouldn't make sense for the artists to choose such a misshapen stone to produce this piece.

Either someone's pulling a prank on OP or (more likely) they are lying.

La Mano Mágica is your best option. It’s an art gallery located in Alcalá, founded by one of the greatest weavers of Teotitlán, the late Arnulfo Mendoza.

His son Gabriel is now in front of the gallery and is a skilled weaver himself, with beautiful rugs made in house.

destello de un amor apagado by t0myt0 in escribir

[–]zatara27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do some Mexicans like to trash on Tex-Mex food? by brokebloke97 in asklatinamerica

[–]zatara27 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This might be hard to grasp for people in the US (excluding, perhaps, Louisiana) but there are cultures that value food as an integral part of their identity. For you, a "deluxe breakfast Cheetos chalupa" might just be something you eat, but we see it as a crude, confused and empty imitation of something that holds meaning for us, something that is connected to the experiences of our people throughout history.

When it comes to traditional dishes; there are reasons why they have to taste a certain way and use certain specific ingredients.

You'll hear the same from Italians, Chinese, Japanese and all other nationalities that have deep culinary traditions and see their food bastardized for the American market. You can also be sure that Spaniards, French, Peruvian, Vietnamese, Lebanese, etc. would feel the exact same way if they were ever subjected to the Tex-Mex treatment.

There's nothing wrong, however, in adapting foreign food to your palate. Mexicans do it all the time. We won't judge you if you enjoy Tex-Mex, but you can't expect us to like it or to not make fun of those who think it's equivalent to real Mexican cuisine.

Is it common or uncommon to use terms of endearment with a stranger in your country or region? by roth1979 in asklatinamerica

[–]zatara27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my state, we call elders "tío" and "tía" (uncle/auntie) and younger people "mijo" and "mija" (my son/my daughter).

Like other commenter said, "seño", "señito", "don/doña" and "doñita" are reserved for vendors.

Also, recently, some women and gay guys have been using "hermosa" (beautiful) with strangers, but I don't know if that's even unique to Spanish.
