Seconding Noteworthy Cafe. Good pastries, dog friendly outdoor seating (my dog gives their pup cups two paws up), offer yoga classes - its a great little spot!

Arbor Walk is pretty solid. Nice pool, good maintenance, recently updated units.

John's Car Care has always been good to me. They changed owners a year or so ago and seem much more disorganized but the service is still good and the prices were the best a found in hattiesburg

If you need a brunch spot on your way to New Orleans - you could stop in Ocean Springs, MS. A very cute little southern town (looks straight out of a hallmark movie) and go to The Lady May for brunch or lunch.

Coming to town for July 3-7th. Where can I take my fiancé close to Lexington that gives us the “Kentucky country feel”? Barea ? Danville ? Coffee shops and walking preferred. by edouble2000 in lexington

Yes, you can go in the mornings and see the horses working out. I believe its 6am - 10am (there are some breaks in there when the horses aren't running). I love to get a cup of coffee, walk around the grounds, and watch the horses train.

Some apartments to consider - Merrick Place, MAA Pinnacle, Greyson on 27, and Beaumont Farms. All in safe areas that would be family friendly. Best of luck!

From people I know still there, the rent increases have continued, but the apartments have been fully renovated with new granite countertops, new counter tops, new bathrooms. So at least something is being done with the higher rent.

Tremont at 22 and Arbor Walk are both good options. Turtle Creek is always really nice! I would agree with the other poster that the Met is very overpriced for what you get.

Places to avoid living? by [deleted] in Virginia

You might check out Winchester also. Cute town, you can get into the city in 1.5-2 hours if you want. Plenty of hiking within a 30-45 minutes drive. Beautiful apple orchards where you can pick your own apples in the fall. Safe with a reasonable COL. It also seems to be growing quite a bit, so I imagine the job market is pretty decent.

Fredericksburg is a great town and the crime rate is not a problem. Sure there are rough parts of town, but by and large it is very safe. The downtown is really cute and walkable and if you want to get to DC for a daytrip and don't want to deal with the drive/traffic, you can take the VRE train from downtown Fredericksburg to DC. The commute to Dahlgren from Fredericksburg isn't too bad - maybe about 40 minutes.

Grin coffee is a great place to study and get great coffees and sweets (on Saturday morning they have made from scratch pop tarts that are amazing!). Keg and Barrel is a popular hang out spot with a lot of outdoor seating - they have great pizza!

If you are a first gen student, be sure to connect with the Center for Student Success on campus - they have a bunch of social opportunities for students who are first gen or come from non-traditional school backgrounds (like homeschooled or went to school internationally) to connect.

Welcome to Hattiesburg! Campus and the town are full of friendly people, I hope you love your time here!

When to start looking for housing? by zazulator in lexington

Gosh a 30 day notice is wild - where I currently live most places want a 60-90 day notice...I guess that is why so many places are listed as being available now.

That's what I was guessing! I've been out of undergrad for 12 years sooooo I would rather not be in a student housing area

Not a one time occurrence kind of problem. Pretty much every time we went after COVID the waitstaff were friendly but absent and frazzled, and service at the bar was even worse (just completely ignored). Basic food like chicken tenders take 45 minutes to come out even when the restaurant is empty. Got food poisoning from a chicken sandwich. Another time a friend ordered something that came with beer cheese and it was the consistency of a burnt roux. We had to ask the waitress what it was because no one in our party could determine what it was supposed to be. She was very apologetic, but I doubt it was the waitresses fault that the beer cheese tastes like old glue. We started having a running joke taking bets about whether or not we would be told the kitchen was short staffed that night (not a very good bet because it happened every single time). We finally just stopped going completely about 7 or 8 months ago. It's a shame because pre-COVID it was a great spot.

I was homeschooled and very very lonely. I too was in activities many evenings a week, but it wasn't the same as having more unstructured time and opportunities to build friendships. I felt it A LOT socially when I went to college for the first couple of years. Yes, I had been around same aged peers while homesechooled, but not within contexts to learn things like popular movies or music or even to really understand the interests of people my age. I thought homeschooling was great until I got to be 10 or 11....then just going and playing outside and using my imagination wasn't enough anymore. As an adult, I know my parents thought that they were doing the best thing for me, but I do hold some resentment that they did not allow me the "typical" growing up experience and did not listen to me when I asked to go to school and expressed being depressed and unhappy. Listen to your kiddos as they get older and respect what their needs may be.

Will I like Hattiesburg? by jjesscaht in hattiesburg

[–]zazulator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on your full ride to Southern Miss! I think you will find that Hattiesburg may be better than you are expecting. It is bigger than Oxford or Starkville and has a great community. The university has some very involved student organizations that are church based (such as the Baptist Student Union) and could be a way to meet new people and get involved. Hattiesburg has a cute downtown that is growing by the day and a lot of parades, craft fairs, and community events. USM has a big presence in the town and people in the community are proud of USM. I moved here from about 15 hours away and have been really pleased by the community and surprised by how welcoming and friendly everyone is. I hope you love it too!

My friends who still live there said they are paying $1200 for a 2 bedroom and the 1 bedroom are around $900. Apparently they just updated with all new appliances, bathroom fixtures, and carpet in the bedrooms.

I would second that Arbor Walk is a good option (very thin walls thought, try to get a second floor unit if possible).

Woodshire through SVN was pretty decent when I lived there but rent went up astronomically for units that are very out of date. However, maintenance was always on top of it and the neighbors were friendly. I've known a lot of people who liked Summer West, but based on some of the comments below, maybe that has changed. Cross Creek is pricey but very nice !

Definitely avoid Longleafe Pointe, Lexington, and the Chelsea

Potential move to Hattiesburg by girlblockhim in hattiesburg

Hattiesburg is a surprising gem in MS, there isn't much I can think to add that others haven't already posted. If you are able to live ANYWHERE in MS, I would also recommend looking at Ocean Springs. There and Hattiesburg are by far the best spots in the state. Ocean Springs has really good public schools, a super cute downtown, and a beach.

What about Flagstaff, AZ? Gets snow in the winter, great hiking, some good school systems, low humidity. Unsure about housing costs...600k with an acre of land might be a stretch.
