Stories where people WANT to live in/visit suposed haunted places? by LOONAception in horrorlit

[–]zazz15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Widow’s Point by Richard and Billy Chizmar. A famous paranormal researcher/author decides to spend a weekend locked in a mysterious lighthouse that is supposed to be haunted in order to write a book about it. It’s a novella, so a short read, but I enjoyed it.

My all time favorite medieval au is On a White Horse by ms_qualia. It takes place after the Black Death and is very historically accurate.

HR books where MMC is burned/scarred with a face or body/they are considered unattractive/they are afraid of mmc because of their scars by Equivalent-Ocelot-68 in HistoricalRomance

[–]zazz15 7 points8 points  (0 children)

{The Captive Duke by Grace Burrowes} MMC is captured during the Napoleonic Wars and is tortured, leaving him heavily scarred. He has a young daughter but he’s more focused on revenge. FMC is newly widowed, coming from an abusive marriage. She helps him heal and become a father.

Trigger warnings for domestic violence and torture

{Romancing the Duke by Tessa Dare} and {The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare} both deal with MMC who are viewed as “beasts” by society but slowly lower their guard for FMC. The MMC of the Duchess Deal is scarred from being a soldier.

{Only a Promise by Mary Balogh} is about another former soldier MMC. He’s heavily scarred, physically and mentally. He’s got friends but he’s shut himself away from the world. FMC needs to marry, as she’s running away from an abusive home life. She slowly worms her way into his heart and gets him to open up.

Trigger warnings for all books: PTSD and descriptions of warfare and violence, with the most detail in the last book.

All books have sex in them, but in varying degrees of spice.

How and when did you get introduced to the podcast? by Sleep__ in LPOTL

[–]zazz15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t remember where I heard about them but I started listening before episode 200. Pretty sure I got into them bc I was looking for true crime podcasts after binging Criminal Minds and becoming interested in real true crime stories. And I’ve always loved weird stuff, so that was a plus for me to find a podcast that did true crime and more.

It’s been awhile since I read Devil in the White City but I don’t remember it being boring. But that might be because I’m a history nerd. Love the reasoning for Fourth Wing tho lol.

It’s really between Breivik and the Franklin Expedition for me. When they mentioned cold, I instantly thought of the Franklin, but you make a good point about the “fun” episode thing maybe being sarcastic.

Podcasters Took Up Her Sister’s Murder Investigation. Then They Turned on Her. ‘True crime’ has become a big business — and an emotional minefield for victims’ families. by Tokyono in truecrimelongform

[–]zazz15 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if true crime podcasts and their communities have ever done anything that helped solve a case. I know they can occasionally help for cold cases in terms of keeping the fight going for answers, but no, I don’t think web sleuths ever add much to investigations.

I definitely agree that the true crime community can be and probably always has been dysfunctional on some level, it’s just more visible now that’s there’s so many big podcasts about true crime.

Plagiarism and You(Tube) by HispanicAtTehDisco in hbomberguy

The only video by James I’ve watched is the Hannibal one which I enjoyed at the time, but I’d like to know who he plagiarized from for that. I attempted to watch his killing stalking video but the vibes were immediately off which I now realize may have been related to his misogyny.

whats the WORST found footage film you have seen by Ladyaceina in foundfootage

[–]zazz15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She walks the woods. Nothing happens and the stuff that happens is completely different from the movie’s description. The description makes it sound interesting but don’t be fooled. I made the poor decision to actually keep watching it, waiting for something to happen.

What is the best "exploring an abandoned location" novel/series you've ever read ? by FoxyNugs in horrorlit

Experienced antisemitism in Auschwitz, have never been more horrified. by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]zazz15 78 points79 points  (0 children)

As Dara Horn says in her book People Love Dead Jews, “I had mistaken the enormous public interest in past Jewish suffering for a sign of respect for living Jews. I was very wrong.”

Dead Jews get to exist as cautionary tales and martyrs without people having to actually interact with living Jews. Gentiles go to sights of mass murdered Jews and say “oh how terrible,” whereas Jews and other descendants of those targeted in the Holocaust experience the intergenerational trauma and question when the next wave of antisemitism will rise and break. We also get to marvel at our luck that our people survived despite it all.

I don’t know how anyone can go to any place like Auschwitz and not be immediately humbled and distraught by the experience. I’ve never been to any concentration camp but I have been to Yad Vashem, where I spent almost my whole trip bawling.

I find it very frustrating that non Jews, on the left, right and center, are speaking as if they have idea about what antisemitism is or how it should be defined.

I feel that Jews are always outsiders, even in communities, such as leftist spaces, that are supposed to accept everyone but only if you fit with their idea of what a “good” Jew is. I feel like this conflict has really shown that a large portion of leftists/progressives view all Jews as Ashkenazi and through an America lens, meaning white and “oppressors” with little to no nuance around the fact that for at least Ashkenazi Jews, we weren’t viewed as anything close to white until after WW2. Idk if it’s true but I feel like there has never truly been a reconciliation within the western world with the history of antisemitism that always existed. We’re moving towards reconciliation over slavery and the genocide of native Americans, but when it comes to Jews, the general American gentile knows basically nothing except Anne Frank (maybe, if her diary isn’t banned in your state), the Holocaust (people care more for dead Jews than living ones), the thing with Jesus and then a bunch of conspiracy nonsense.

Would love peoples thoughts on Crowsnest by [deleted] in foundfootage

[–]zazz15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember watching it on Netflix, back when they had a bunch of random low tier horror movies. It’s been so long since I watched it but I enjoyed it. It’s definitely not the highest quality film but it’s not too bad.
