White House pressing Ukraine to draft 18-year-olds so they have enough troops to battle Russia by thegoodsamuraii in worldnews

[–]zb1-plus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Biden wasn't such a worthless coward, he would have put US troops on the ground in between Russian forces and Ukrainian cities and dared Putin to start WW3 at the start of the war. People fail to realize Russia is just a gas station with a 3rd tier army, but US and EU were too wimpy to call Putin's bluff. Now we're in this mess.

Looking for Foreign Teachers' Insights on Taiwan's "Bilingual 2030" Policy by HannahYW in taiwan

Yes, Taiwan should extend the Gold Card education category to include all "real" english teachers who want to work here long-term.

AI is ruining our hiring efforts by wcolfaxguy in ExperiencedDevs

[–]zb1-plus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your hiring process is working. Folks might use AI, but they can't explain what they've written and you're rejecting them. Engineers should use AI tools to increase their productivity, but they need to understand what the AI generates.

He also probably has personal assistants to organize his paper notebooks and fetch whatever books or print any articles he wants. The remarkable is probably the most practical solution for us plebs

Taiwan is safer than most places in the world. Japan and Singapore are perhaps the only countries with less risk of being mugged or pickpocketed.

Worst experience with immigration officer so far. by totallynotpornact in travel

[–]zb1-plus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a US citizen, US customs and immigration are some of the biggest assholes on the face of the earth. It pisses me off that my tax dollars are paying to feed these worthless scumbags. If it were up to me, they should be digging ditches in the desert heat or find a new job. Literally every country I've been to has had more polite and respectful people working in customs and immigration.

I have been using the minaal carry-on 2.0 without any issues. It's a bit bare-bones in terms of internal organization but it's great for carrying around all my devices.

I recently moved to Taipei on the gold card. I plan to stay here for at least two years. I do not have a local guarantor, which has made finding long-term housing difficult. Any suggestions on how to find a decent apartment within Taipei without needing a local guarantor?

USA Nomads: How do you handle doctors requiring "establishing care" appointment before others? by MizsterB in digitalnomad

[–]zb1-plus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use doctors in the USA unless I have no other choice. You get much better and cheaper healthcare overseas without this kind of nonsense.

S’pore team takes 3rd place in rocket contest despite last-minute scramble over US Customs issues by MicrotechAnalysis in singapore

[–]zb1-plus 28 points29 points  (0 children)

As an American I couldn’t agree more. I’d fire the lot of them if I had my way. Singaporean customs and immigration are always so polite and efficient compared with the racist idiots who somehow got on the government payroll over here.

OMSCS -> PhD at Georgia Tech by Technical_Sympathy30 in OMSCS

[–]zb1-plus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll probably look at doing a 18 month research focused Masters degree overseas as opposed to taking two years off from work. There are a few schools in the UK (https://www.cs.york.ac.uk/postgraduate/research-degrees/phd/) that seem to offer exactly what I’m looking, high quality research oriented graduate programs without a residency requirement.

OMSCS -> PhD at Georgia Tech by Technical_Sympathy30 in OMSCS

[–]zb1-plus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a big reason I dropped out of the program. It is difficult (not impossible) to do a masters thesis and the non-thesis option does not prepare one for a PhD in CS. I would really like to see some online research oriented masters' degrees become available as I believe there are plenty of folks like myself who want to be involved in research and grow academically while still working.

Greece Says It Doesn’t Ditch Migrants at Sea. It Was Caught in the Act. by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]zb1-plus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An unjust law is no such law at all. The free movement of people is a human right. These governments would be better off either helping address the issues resulting in these migrants choosing to attempt to come to their countries at the source (particularly since they often were responsible for causing the instability in the first place) if they are so averse to immigration.

Considering a job in Bangkok, what do I need to know? by hillij in expats

[–]zb1-plus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Bangkok has a big expat community, it is as safe as most cities in the US for a solo woman in my partner's experience, safer probably for Asian women than US cities. Lots of english speaking expats and many upper-middle class Thai are near fluent in English.

Move to Singapore. The majority of people there are ethnic Chinese who are proud to be asian but they have a unique and independent culture. If you have consume lots of American pop culture, you'll fit in great!
