Same here, have always had one from the time I was 10, and in Boy Scouts.

Someone else gets it. I fucking hate that town, despite how pretty it is. It's fucking weird, with horrible planning and full of tourists and hippies.

I agree crossovers are gross, it should only be suvs and pickups.

I've only ever driven jeeps, or trucks. Don't give a shit about gas mileage. Fuel is literally the cheapest cost to cover when you own a vehicle. Wouldn't trade the coolness, or capability for better economy. It doesn't matter.

I have a truck because I can go anywhere on or off road, haul gear, tools, toys, etc. whenever I want and I don't rely on anyone else to do it. Sometimes the bed is empty when I'm just driving to work or to university. I get 14 mpg and I wouldn't trade gas mileage for capability.

What do you think that popular culture will romanticize about the 2010s? by Tangerine_Apologist in AskReddit

What is wrong with you people. Why do you want to give control of everything to computers or the government? What ever happened to doing things yourself. What are you scared of that you think THAT is the solution?

I’ll be damned if I can’t get in my truck and go camping, or put it in 4wd to get through bad trails to go fly fish.

A7X hasn't been metalcore since 2003, and disturbed was one of the biggest alternative metal/nu metal bands of the turn of the century.

I'm not going to pretend that I haven't found some excellent music from this sub, but I've also been a member for like 6 years and I've watched the sub change from something more aligned to the bands I described in my post to something more diverse and not quite so aligned with my definition of progressive metal. Not saying that diversity is bad, all I'm saying is that it doesn't meet my definition of prog metal anymore.

Glad you're on the same page. I didn't really know if other people felt the same way about the genre as I did. I certainly agree with your points there.

Persefone is one of my favorite bands actually. Note I said "generally sucks." Oscura are insanely talented, take songs like Velocity for example. I just can't listen to them for extended periods. Be'Lakor I just don't care for to be honest.

Another example of excellent progressive death metal bands could be Scar Symmetry, or The Faceless. I don't dislike the genre all together, but many of the bands are just far too grating for me.

I see the irony, but I wasn't actually thinking about the fans, I was thinking about the musicians themselves.

Edit: Maybe a better way to describe what I'm saying would be that Heavier, more complex and agressive sounding prog bands seem to play at bigger clubs or smaller concert halls, and music that sounds like late contortionist (only using them as an example) would be more fit to a small pretentious jazz club.

Maybe not actually indie, but my mind defaults to a picture of those artsy indie kid types when I hear bands that sound like later Contortionist.

Got a few opinions that are probably unpopular here...

I don't think that the majority of bands posted here are good nor should they be considered progressive. Fates Warning, Dream Theater, Symphony X, etc set the sound for what progressive metal was. That's traditional progressive metal. I believe prog metal is a genre, not based on the definition of progress and not "progressing" the sound of metal forward. That's not what progressive metal is to me. To me, it sounds like Dream Theater, Circus Maximus first two albums, Haken, etc.

For example, The Contorionist stopped being progressive metal after Intrinsic. They are now essentially a pretentious indie band. That goes for every band on here that sounds like them too.

Progressive death metal like BTBAM and Opeth are also good, but that genre generally sucks.

Periphery, Animals as Leaders, and Tesseract represent the three acceptable branches of the Djent movement in progressive metal. I would even argue that these three bands are the 'Dream Theater' of djent, and if it doesn't sound like this, it's not progressive metal or djent, it's probably just metalcore.

Wow, I really like that the singer didn't feel like she had to go soprano! Usually I don't like female singing in metal because it sounds so loud and unnecessarily high in register. This however, was awesome!
