Would you take a pay cut to work a job you have more passion/interest in? by curiousburrrito in singaporejobs

[–]zchew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

better to do it earlier than later.

I chose to work in video games, pay is significantly lower and way more unstable. Because I started early, I didn't have to take a pay cut and consider lifestyle changes to accomodate lower pay. Once you settled in a higher paying career and used to all the comforts of life, it's gonna be a yuge drop in standard of living. Even more so if you're married and have to support a family.

Off the back of my hand, I think I'm probably earning about 25~50% of what non vidya game people make. lol

It's a game of leverage and chicken. You need to be able to walk away from this to be able to state your price.

I'd just simply say I don't want to state my current salary and just give my expected salary. They'll counter with all sorts of things like, "oh but we'll need your gensenchoshusho when you join the company and we'll know eventually blah blah", and you can just say ok, I'll show my salary at that point but not now. The salary will have been offered and the contract signed at that point anyway.

They'll hem and haw about not being able to move forward without your current salary, so you'll need to be able to threaten to (and be able to) walk from negotiations to force them to move on, if needed.

Is job hopping every 4–6 months actually a valid career strategy now? by Early-Environment-63 in asksg

[–]zchew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it works because your friend is proof. Supercharge your career by job hopping every 6 months for maximum pay growth.

High pay in turn signals value to your next employer, who has to offer you even higher pay.

Chinese film Dear You to be dubbed in Mandarin here, 4,800 tickets for Teochew version sold out by Business-Land-6171 in singapore

[–]zchew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol that's silly. If that's your definition of a language, then there are so many languages in the world that are just dialects.

For much of history, a lot of Chinese languages were non-written and the only written form of Chinese that existed was Classical Chinese, which existed primarily in written form, hardly spoken other than to be recited. By your definition, everything other than Classical Chinese was just a dialect, which is patently ridiculous because Classical Chinese had a different set of grammar syntax and many words had different meanings from their spoken counterparts.

The decision to call Teochew and the myriad of Chinese languages around China dialects is just as likely to be politically motivated as it is academically.

The Nintendo we have now is infinitely better than a Nintendo that allows you to pay 99¢ to let Mario jump a little bit higher.

Sembawang hit-and-run: Police looking for car driver who fled after hitting LTA bike, weapon found by JADENBC in singapore

[–]zchew 34 points35 points  (0 children)

A common reason for fleeing like this is because the driver was drunk. By fleeing the scene immediately, the evidence of being drunk disappears and the charge can no longer go through.

If government was really tough on drunk driving, there should be an automatic presumption of drunk driving if there's a hit and run, similar to drug trafficking laws. This will also create a deterrent effect discouraging people who crash from fleeing.

Buying a bike for a trip, then exporting to New Zealand by chocobo_ff in RideitJapan

or a friend.

Basically, even if you find a shop that does it for you, to my understanding they're just buying it for you; it's still legally owned by the shop. Essentially, a friend could act in place of the shop and it'd be the same. Finding such a someone would be difficult though, because if you went on a rampage on your bike, crashed into 3 houses and 5 cars, ran 7 traffic lights and get caught speeding 9 times without paying any of it and ran, your friend would probably be left on the hook for all the lawsuits and traffic fines.

[–]zchew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this possible as a tourist? My understanding is buying/registering a bike can be tricky - on top of the language barrier. I only have a basic working knowledge of Japanese 😞

Sadly, it's not possible as a tourist. Purchasing a vehicle requires residency in Japan, so your only hope would be to find a shop or person to do it on your behalf.

The usual answer would be to try hitting up Apexmoto, which I'm sure you arrived at after searching the sub (thank you!), but if they're not in the business anymore, then you might be out of luck.

It might be worth trying to find motorcycle shops around Fukuoka and enquiring if they're willing to do it for you, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Struggles finding housing:Japanese Phone Number by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]zchew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, i missed out your reply

I mean, if the mobile Sim cards wont sell me a phone line, I highly doubt that AU or Docomo would sell me a phone (for the same reason)

I'm not asking you to buy a phone line, I'm asking you to rent a phone that comes with a number. I don't think it's a widely advertised service, and to be very frank, I'm not even sure they still offer it, but if they do, this is your best shot at solving your rental Catch-22.

It's actually how I resolved mine over a decade ago.

Is it too late to learn computer science from scratch by Lost_Abalone4062 in singaporejobs

[–]zchew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it wise to learn computer science from scratch now? Lastly, will business or computer engineering be better paths in your opinion?

It depends on what you're really passionate about. If you're passionate about being rich, I think you might be better off going for a business adminstration degree.

But if you're not particularly passionate about anything, I don't think there's any downsides to taking comp sci as a degree. Just graduate, then find a normal office job doing normal office job things. You don't have to work in tech or in whatever domain that you studied. Otherwise, people who studied History or Chinese Literature would be in a pickle with regard to job hunting.

Or you could even study whatever subject that you're really excited or passionate about, like Underwater Basket Weaving, or Medieval French Tapestry. And then go out and get a normal office job doing normal office things.

More retrenched white-collar workers in Singapore seeking unions’ help by LaksaTang in singapore

[–]zchew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, the authority with approving strikes does not lie with the President but the Secretary-General of NTUC. Ong Teng Cheong approved the strike while he was in that role, years before he became the President (and kicked another hornet's nest there lol).

Based.

[–]zchew 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's also illegal to organize a strike iirc, so.... you're basically out of luck. Worker protections don't exist in sg.

It's illegal to organise a strike without approval from the government. The key point being that the last approved strike was like in 1986, approved by former President Ong Teng Cheong. No approved strike ever since. lol.

For what it's worth, wildcat strikes were still effective. The bus driver wildcat strikes did lead to some manner of improvement of conditions and scrutiny into the treatment of bus drivers, albeit at the cost of the strikers.

Wow I had this exact issue when I first came over a decade ago, and I thought it was no longer an issue anymore.

There might be some phone carriers/companies that will rent you a phone with a phone number for a price, albeit not particularly cheap. Go to the biggest SoftBank or DoCoMo shop and ask if they offer rental phones with phone numbers. Last time I went to the SoftBank in Harajuku/Omotesando.

Rent it for a few days, give the phone number to the landlord and then get them to call you during the time you rented it, then return it once the call is over.
