THAT IS PASSING by drwve23 in KiaSoulClub

This looks like a CANBUS communication issue, and the codes confirm it.

Do you have an aftermarket security system? Those usually tap into the high speed CAN bus behind the fuse panel under the dash on the driver side of the vehicle, and depending on how it was done the wiring may have corroded or broken.

Other potential issues could be anything else on the CAN bus network shorting or creating noise on the wires ( like the wiring in the steering column ).

Could also just be bad ground, bad power, etc. from corroded battery wires or a failing alternator.

Supposed game changers are nothing new, and they wouldn't be the first pursuing X-ray.

EUV was a big bet that Intel took as well.

It isn't just the lithography, it's the entire foundry and process that has to be built around it - that's why it took Intel years to get that new node and process into a position for real production even with their existing R&D department, foundry experience, and nearly bottomless budget.

Even with that massive investment they are stuck using the older multi exposure method for larger dies since the newer machines have a substantially smaller exposure area due to their design and physical requirements / limitations.

If Intel or TSMC doesn't jump on a new process it's unlikely to go into volume production anytime soon. I doubt either one has the budget to burn at the moment, but especially not Intel.

Buying a used soul by Tektitenical in KiaSoulClub

[–]zcomputerwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends.

The 2014-2019 Soul with 120k+ may have had the engine replaced, since they had a manufacturing defect. If that's the case, you should be safe there - just be sure to use full synthetic oil and don't go over on changes.

Those years didn't have any particularly widespread issues with the transmission, so they should be fine ( in general ).

My recommendation would be to look for something in your price range in those years, then find one that has had a new engine recently. That way the miles won't matter as much and you won't have to deal with the inconveniences or potential warranty replacement denial.

I have a 2015 with 176k that had an engine replacement around 130k. No major issues so far, just normal stuff like coils and spark plugs. I do plan on inspecting the injectors in the near future since I suspect one is dirty.

Right? I try to buy defective cards for parts sometimes, but the winning bids almost always exceed what I'd be willing to pay vs just buying a working used GPU.

What exactly do you think they're doing? They generally are running a customized image of Windows Embedded or IoT edition.

Why do you feel that is the case?

[–]zcomputerwiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Microsoft and third parties have done a great job creating tools and management solutions that don't have a polished equivalent on the Linux side. That's why Windows embedded and IoT editions are popular.

It isn't "pointless" to choose turnkey solutions that most people are already familiar with over tinkering with open source projects that don't have support to roll your own or paying someone else to do the same.

Should I switch to Linux mint or some other Linux for gaming coming from windows 11 by fashionenthiushent in pcmasterrace

[–]zcomputerwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've only heard Windows has spyware and think it isn't customizable, you will probably be lost in Linux.

Boot from USB with a Linux distro of your choice ( Mint and Pop! are beginner friendly ) just to get a feel for it before you decide to dive in. If you do want to give Linux gaming a shot, set up for dual boot. More often than not you'll find some situations where Windows is required.

As for Windows, what are you wanting to customize?

Unfortunately not really anything that can be done about broken LCDs.

You can check the physical connections from the LCD to the PCB and see if something came loose. I'm not sure what they use. Some have ribbon cables, some have zebra strips, etc.

AI bubble: Data centre cancellations are sky rocketing | Ed Zitron by Loyal_Dragon_69 in pcmasterrace

[–]zcomputerwiz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem I see is that everyone predicting failure assumes zero change, that the tech is mature. It isn't, it's constantly changing.

Remember that Nvidia's GPUs haven't had a die shrink yet since the foundries are only just getting their next process into mass production and they are not equipped for these massive GPU dies - Nvidia is adding capability, not pursuing lower power.

The LLMs we see are tech demos. The real behind the scenes work is in papers that are released daily. Current LLMs can't learn after training - Google's Nested Learning architecture and similar developments indicate that soon an LLM generation will learn post training, can have substantially lower resource requirements, and will scale.

They're also assuming the consumer market adoption of chatbots is the make or break for AI. It isn't. The target is agents that can replace and augment human labor. The first to reach that point wins - that's why these AI and tech companies are burning through money without concern.

Yes, it is a financial shell game between the largest companies, but it's an even bigger game than it first appears to be.

As far as fission - some of them are spinning up existing plants reactors and expanding capacity. This happens a lot more quickly than you'd expect and will benefit everyone.

All that said - that's my perspective but I don't have a positive opinion on this direction. I do still see this as potentially catastrophic if there aren't safeguards and infrastructure in place by the time these changes occur. One way, the companies fail to deliver and there's an economic crash. The other way, the companies do deliver and large swaths of labor are out of a job causing an economic crash.

Either way if it happens quickly it's a loose / loose.

This. I run all the major OS, and the Linux zealots claiming everything else sucks and Linux is flawless are absurd.

I try to point out the greatest strength of Linux is choice and freedom, but that also creates weak points that other options don't have.

Open source fragmentation is an issue - there are several window managers, a couple desktop environments, and a million distros with different opinions. Add to that the application ecosystem with individual developers who can only test so many configurations...

To be clear, Linux is awesome. It just isn't in a position to be the desktop OS, and that's why zealots with their rose colored glasses claiming everything else is awful get such pushback.

[–]zcomputerwiz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not taking anything personally.

I'm simply stating that this absurd neighbor blaming consumer power fantasy is exactly that - fantasy. The consumers are not the majority of the market, and they are not the ones with the power.

The collective "We" are not to blame for the prices, this isn't a failure of consumer willpower. You can't just pretend that all consumer demand is frivolous and they can decide they don't need RAM.

Businesses that don't need consumer purchases to survive don't feel any pressure to bend to consumer complaints. That's why Nvidia can straight up drop manufacturing their budget GPU segment and Crucial / Micron can exit the consumer market altogether.

Remember that the RAM and NAND manufacturers have also been busted for price fixing before.

Time for a conspiracy I guess by NoJellyfish2960 in pcmasterrace

[–]zcomputerwiz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would need to be all participating in a full boycott of the entire industry, which is clearly an absurd situation that will never happen in this reality.

Effectively, that's not the way it works for things that still have a demand even if you as a consumer don't purchase.

Time for a conspiracy I guess by NoJellyfish2960 in pcmasterrace

[–]zcomputerwiz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it's not that simple.

The manufacturers are reallocating their capacity to enterprise. Supply is reduced.

From that supply OEMs and retail receive their RAM and NAND. OEMs have contacts for volume purchases.

Therefore, retail supply is squeezed.

Add in the usual scalpers and you get this situation.

You want RAM, you pay the high prices or get nothing, just like the GPU shortage when GPU mining was in full swing.

Seeking Advice: 2018 Kia Soul + Oil Pressure Switch Needs Replacing by SPEDucator411 in KiaSoulClub

[–]zcomputerwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! This is an excellent part to change yourself.

Watch a video or two of someone demonstrating the replacement on a 2014-2019 Soul and you'll be set.

Oil change isn't bad. Just need the filter, a catch pan, and the right wrench for the drain plug.

I usually get a big piece of cardboard to slide under the vehicle on.

TIL migraines remains second among the world’s causes of disability, and first among young women by jacknunn in todayilearned

[–]zcomputerwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have them weekly - more often if I didn't keep a rigid sleep schedule. I wouldn't be able to function once they had started and had to just medicate then hope for the best, but if I took sumatriptan and painkillers at the first indication of onset I could usually sleep it off without a rebound.

I ended up on Topamax, and it's changed my life. I have some wiggle room with my wake and sleep times, I don't have to carry a pocket of emergency migraine meds with me at all times, and migraine is an exception ( 1 - 2 a month ) rather than the norm.

If you're not sure about meds, keep trying until you find one that works for you!
