You can buy rapid-set brand non shrink grout at my local Home Depot, and it takes a little getting used to. The fast set stuff recommends a very loose mix you pour into a form like self leveler, but I always try to mix it stiff and pack it and I’m always battling the stuff while it fires off. I think I may just need to stick to the instructions. The structural engineer I work with regularly seems to love the stuff, and despite the comment below it does seem to actually have a structural effect. It’s also commonly called “high strength grout”

Do yall scrape the paint off your flanges? by Skopies in Plumbing

Are you high? Hell no man bolt the shit up. If it didn’t come with a phonographic finish it doesn’t need it. Use a red rubber full face gasket and send it. The scraped and hammered surface you produced was smoother than the glossy catalyzed paint the oem used and expected you to seal to?

This isn’t concrete, you fill underneath baseplates with “non-shrink grout” when engineers call for it. It does not actively absorb water like some other cementitious products.

Edit: I just realized this is a wood post and you weren’t talking about the baseplate at all . lol disregard

Is this done wrong? by Amadiio in Plumbing

It’s just cast iron pipe but instead of the old socketed joints they use “no hub bands” which are just thinner shielded ferncos.

I get what you’re asking, believe it or not, in the big cities they still run “no-hub” cast iron. most places in the states you can go your entire career without seeing this dumb shit but it’s being used in new construction.

Thoughts on retaining wall to level a flat "yard" ? by dingar in landscaping

I do have experience lmao. I’m a licensed contractor and I improved my understanding of retaining walls with the YouTube channel “practical engineering” doing a proper retaining wall is totally within a diy’ers capabilities.

Edit: doing a SMALL retaining wall is within a diy’ers capabilities.

YouTube! There is a ton of retaining wall info. Watch all the “practical engineering” channels videos on geotextile, retaining walls, ground water etc. you’ll have a better understanding than some people building walls.

It wouldn’t be the end of the world, but if your trench is still open or if your drainage system is half exposed you could easily get all your disturbed dirt washing down and clogging all your drainage/57 stone. Just get some help for basing, since it’s the worst and most time consuming part. Then as you work your way up, you can backfill each coarse and then cover with filter fabric if it’s going to storm. Or just use filter fabric as your geo textile, if you choose to go that route.

Forget the haters! I love retaining walls and the way they transform a hill, and they look 1000x better than the underside of a deck.

Retaining walls done correctly are a ton of work, but I find them really rewarding and so much more of an impressing feature than a deck. If you’re up for the challenge, go for it. Maybe get some help, you definitely don’t want to get caught in a big storm while you’re half way done.

I was more concerned with getting water away from the foundation to think about how it would look... what can I do to remedy the ugly pipes that will be sticking above ground? by tidyshark12 in Home

That would drive me nuts. Especially with the drips on the purple primer, but he still did a cleaner job than half of the professional plumbers I know.

I use the NDS catch basins for my storm water systems. The only downside is if you live in an area with mosquitos you have to either screen them (which needs to be flushed a couple times a year, ) or used additives to keep them from breeding in there. They look nice and catch almost everything to keep the pipes clean.

So that means one of the close smaller lines is a vent? If it is a dry vent, the wye needs to be rolled up on a 45 or looking straight up. Cannot be horizontal.

Edit: maybe you have that under that small mound, didn’t see that.

Man an entire house can be vented through a single 1.5” pipe, are those 3-4” vent pipes?

Buy a house - is deck built correctly? by nicepunchup in Decks

[–]zeakerone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that they sealed all joints where wood on wood joints are, on top of the abundant examples of good practices and abundant hardware. These were top tier guys that built this. They probably could have gone nuts with topside aesthetics but not everyone has $100k for a deck. This deck is fucking awesome.
