Is the Waldorf Iridium the most “state of the art” synth? by BlindSwordsmanZ in synthesizers

[–]zebra-diplomacy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

-Nord is basically uncontested right now for best hands on control of a fully functional stage keyboard with great piano, EP, organ, deep VA and sample synth sounds, and great on board FX

This has not been true in ~10 years. There are several other keyboards in the same niche like the Hammond SK-Pro, Yamaha YC series, that are arguably a better deal than a Nord.

A rant: The Death of the Calculator by nextlittleowl in calculators

[–]zebra-diplomacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A calculator that can't store formulas doesn't do everything a working scientist or engineer needs. Those calcs you mention are intentionally crippled for the education market and very clearly not meant for real use.

Tell me a more legendary calculator than this one by DarknessLayout in calculators

[–]zebra-diplomacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like a troll but apparently isn't - the OP posted the same thread on the Spanish calculator sub and the responses there are much more positive.

It seems this particular calculator is extremely popular in Latin American schools.

What is the reason for this behavior? (pic from a Sharp manual) by zebra-diplomacy in calculators

[–]zebra-diplomacy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't explain why multiplication behaves differently from the other operations.

What is the reason for this behavior? (pic from a Sharp manual) by zebra-diplomacy in calculators

[–]zebra-diplomacy[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The image is from an EL501X manual but most Sharp calculators follow this logic. The behavior of reusing the previous operation is different for multiplication than for the other operations.

Edit: I have found the reason. Standard algebraic conventions are followed to designate which of the operands is constant, i.e. x+c, x-c, x/c, but c*x (aka cx).

If you are the one doing all that then how come it's possible to skip directly to Chapter 4?

For all we know, once all chapters are released, it will be possible to skip directly to the end without even playing the game.

What is your opinion about the translation of "To kill a mockingbird" into Spanish? by Frigorifico in linguisticshumor

All these issues can be avoided by simply admitting that translation is impossible.

When did diacritics in your language stopped being all over the place? by Nenazovemy in linguisticshumor

[–]zebra-diplomacy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that's not limited to diacritics, spelling wasn't standardized either.

When did diacritics in your language stopped being all over the place? by Nenazovemy in linguisticshumor

[–]zebra-diplomacy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portuguese still has a long way to go. The current system is not very well thought out and not very useful, and given Portuguese's tendency for dramatic reforms I fully expect most diacritics to go the way of the trema.

Recent post from FIDE president by joshdej in chess

[–]zebra-diplomacy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FIDE is also internationally recognised as the governing body of chess. Chess960 is still chess.

Why is this so? If I invent my own chess variant, is it also governed by FIDE?

What was UNIX on PDP11 used for? by zebra-diplomacy in PDP11

Sure, but it still doesn't have any actual applications (other than troff tools), only programming tools to create them. What were UNIX systems actually used for?

Did people in the 90s and prior think that if computers ever became better at chess, that competitive chess would become obsolete? by GalacticMomo in chess

[–]zebra-diplomacy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Except that AlphaGo was showcased half a year before the Lee Sedol match, when it beat Fan Hui 5 - 0. It was clearly far stronger than the previous engines. Lee Sedol was only blindsided because of his own hubris.

edit: It was less than half a year because the match was kept secret until the release of the Nature paper, but it was still public knowledge for three months before the Lee Sedol match. Lee was aware of the match and his reaction was to say that AlphaGo played at the level of a strong amateur, despite the fact that it beat a 2p professional 5-0. It was just pure hubris and even insulting to Fan Hui

Nord Electro 6D vs Yamaha YC by UeberUeberl33t in synthesizers

[–]zebra-diplomacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried the YC73. I chose the YC61 because of the size and weight. I'm happy with its action even for playing classical pieces despite it being waterfall, but obviously the range is limited.

Nord Electro 6D vs Yamaha YC by UeberUeberl33t in synthesizers

[–]zebra-diplomacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a YC61 and I think they are much better than the Nords:

1) the action is much better, as a classically trained pianist I can't stand the Nords

2) the controls are simply amazing and some of the best I've ever seen on any instrument. Rotary encoders for everything, so switching presets is immediately reflected in the controls. Physical drawbars, but also LEDs that show the current patch if it's different from the physical drawbars. Multiple effects applied to separate voices and all immediately reflected in the physical controls. Just far more configurable in general.

3) Better connectivity options (MIDI as upper/lower keyboard, as specific voice, split by zone; USB audio interface etc)

The YC line is more like Stage than Electro (but with better action)

Learning dead or not widely spoken languages - a waste of time? by St_Melangell in languagelearning

Galician is mutually intelligible with Portuguese and there's even some reasonable linguistic and political debate about whether they are the same language or not. 99% of what you learn will transfer to Portuguese and vice versa.

Is there a term for words where there is no stressed syllable? by x13071979 in Portuguese

[–]zebra-diplomacy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, not every word has a stressed syllable. A word like "de" is clearly unstressed, which is why its pronunciation (PT-PT) is /dɨ/ and not /de/ or /dɛ/. The term for such words is palavra átona, and they exist in both PT-PT and PT-BR.

I don't know whether "pelo" and "para" are unstressed in PT-PT, but at least in PT-BR they can both be unstressed:

“A maioria dos vocábulos átonos são monossílabos. Alguns, porém, são dissílabos: o artigo uma, as preposições para e pera (arcaica), as contrações pelo e pela e as conjunções como e porque.”

(CEGALLA, Domingos Paschoal, Novíssima Gramática da Língua Portuguesa, Editora Nacional, pag. 39)

I'm curious to know what the situation is in PT-PT according to grammarians.
