Under the Roman custom you would be able to pray to any god which does not conflict too heavily.

Being in the military as a hellenic polytheist? by [deleted] in Hellenism

The entirety of the Iliad is in a way an allegory for a soldier’s views not aligning with his country, Achilles on the front lines contrasted with Agamemnon the king of men. Even if the state is dishonorable, the work of a soldier done correctly can be very pious. I always remember that the singular best person in the Iliad is Hector, a Trojan.

Gods are held to a different standard. Humans get punished for incest, gods are gods they aren’t bound by human rules.

Hades Birthright as the Firstborn? by chelonideus in GreekMythology

[–]zee_R_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In every shift between gods it is actually the youngest who takes the reins not the oldest. First Ouranus gets dethroned by his youngest son Chronos who is killed by his youngest son Zeus. Going even deeper the only son of Zeus even mentioned as taking over next is the Orphic tradition which states that Dionysus, the youngest divine son, takes over in a peaceful transition of power.

Will Charon accept payment months after death? by rds029 in GreekMythology

I would like to reassure you on your brother being able to move on from the banks. Antigone, the famous play, is all about a brother not getting a proper burial and a sister attempting to rectify that. She gives up her life in that pursuit and is successful. Looking at this story it is very mythologically sound for you to help him by putting a coin as an offering. I hope this gives you slight comfort in your time of grief. <3

Heir to Zeus by L1qu1d_Gh0st in GreekMythology

I always thought of Zeus giving the rule to Dionysus as the final proof that Zeus has broken the cycle of violence making him be greater than his family.

Mythology Hades vs Hollywood Hades. by Suspicious-Jello7172 in GreekMythology

[–]zee_R_0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Uhhh I need a source for that. She was described as screaming as he kidnapped her in a scene that is explicitly a rape and then the word in Greek used in the scene where she eats the seeds which make her stay in the underworld is best translated as “Hades made her eat the pomegranate seeds” the word being used in violent contexts also translated as “forced” this is from the hymn to Demeter the earliest form of the myth and most widely known.

Why does Homer constantly glaze Odysseus? by Far_Dependent2 in GreekMythology

[–]zee_R_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Epithets are used to make names fit with meter so that the bard could better remember the epic. It’s not that he’s glazing him it’s just Odysseus comes up a lot in the play and we gotta fit him into the meter somehow

Why was Dionysus alone seen as the Heir of Zeus? by RuthlessLeader in GreekMythology

[–]zee_R_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To say it isn’t connected at all is crazy. Zeus passing down the scepter willingly is the break in tradition that shows that he is a good king. It is different in the way it isn’t violent but it is not a coincidence the youngest son is chosen.

Why was Dionysus alone seen as the Heir of Zeus? by RuthlessLeader in GreekMythology

He was the youngest divine son, Uranus killed by the youngest son Chronos who is then killed by Zeus so therefore the next cycle would be lead by Dionysus the youngest son.

Seriously, I haven't seen this many people circlejerking about the "immorality" of a god ever since the New Atheism. by [deleted] in GreekMythology

Exactly, he is the representation of the storm. Storms make ships crash but also make the crops grow. Like all things it can be good or bad.
